Bradley out for the year. Bud Black seen whistling innocently, staring at ceiling

Wow.

I'll say this, and others have made good points, but I still think that umpires shouldn't be allowed to say anything but the following six words:

  • Strike
  • Ball
  • Fair
  • Foul
  • Safe
  • Out
Those six words and the numbers one through four.

If somehow, "Piece of sh_t" has found its way into White's Winters' lexicon, then he needs to be removed. Also, Bud Black should learn to stand in between his player and the ump. That's the correct way to handle a temper tantrum. The incorrect way is whatever happened in the game there.

Also-also-also... Little bit of shame on those of you who thought Milton Bradley was faking. Granted, he may be the boy who cried wolf, but still... Shame on those villagers who let their sheep get eaten by that wolf too.

Does this fire up the Padres? Does this wake up their inner anger that burns within? Stay tuned to find out!

Update [2007-9-24 14:15:47 by Dex]: fixed from where I referred to Winters as "White". That race card keeps finding its way out of the pocket.

I am pissed
But, we are as good as our pitching.  If CY, Maddog, Peavy pitch to top form we will go far.  If they are off, we will not do well-even with a healthy Milton in the lineup.  7 games in 7 days-Wild Card and NL West Championship are still in play.  Hopefully the padres can go through one of those nice offensive streaks in the next 3 weeks.

I agree
But will Average Padres Fan recognize the fact that championships are built on pitching and defense?

average intelligence
is still pretty stupid.

I should add
where was the Friar in all of this?  Back in the day the Chicken would have jumped ontop of winters and pooped on his head.  Can we get a real mascot.

I know, right?
My dream scenario... And that troll from the previous thread may not agree... But a benches clearing brawl between the Padres and the umpires. That would be effing terrific.

Myabe this is a dumb question...but we all know sometimes sarcasm is tough to pick-up in print. Are you really serious in your crticism of Bud's actions yesterday?

by Drama on Sep 24, 2007 10:29 AM PDT reply actions

Yes
The proper way from behind is a bear hug and lift. If he had time to do it, he should've stepped in front of Milton, faced him and said, "We got you. We got you."

Honestly, you shouldn't ever be pushing somebody if you're attempting to restrain them.

That being said... Not everybody is as learned at restraining crazies like I am. When I was in college, I worked at a Q-Zar and also at a Boys & Girls Club, so I know the deal when it comes to crazies.

Buddy
If you watch the replay again...you'll see that Buddy did get in front of him at first. But Milty literally tossed him to the side. The only think that kept Buddy from falling to the ground was that he was holding on to Milty's jersey.

I rip Buddy probably more than anyone, but I think he was trying his best to save Milty from really getting into serious trouble.

The proper way
to restrain Bradley is to always have a trained sniper in the dugout, armed with a blow gun and copious amounts of mood stabliziers and muscle relaxants.

After Bradley's strikeout in the 5th when his aggression levels were beginning to rise, the Milton Patrol should've given him some of his "special vitamins" to help him maintain his chill.  Disaster would have been averted.

Take down moves for kids (or Milton)
My sister is a teacher and they learn some sweet take down moves during their in-service days.  My sister teaches Special Ed so they combine the physical restraint with shouted affirmations like, "Make good choices", which would probably be something to look into for Milton.  I'm gonna sneak into one of those sessions and see if I can't pick up some other techniques for managing the hard-to-manage.

But still, the blow gun loaded up with tranquilizers is the way to go with Milton.  You don't have to be up in his grill to get the job done.  Thusly, no one risks an injury and the end result is docile, happy, offense-producing Milton.

Back to solving the world's problems....

Classic!!
I agree - much better restraining approach (though I also like the sniper with mood altering drugs approach)

lol
Look, I already said I felt bad about that Dex, no need to call me out on the front page like that!!

He totally did the soccer grab and scream. Yes, I understand now that it was a legitimate injury, but c'mon! It looked like a fake reaction. Shoot - Cameron had his hand totally stepped on by Milton earlier and all he did was shake it a little. Cammy would have walked off on his own with a torn ACL.

Magic Spray
I've been saying for years that baseball needs to bring in the magic spray. I dunno what's taking so long.

by Dex on Sep 24, 2007 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not even upset
anymore. This is just such a sad situation. It's sad that because of his past, Milton Bradley doesn't get a fair shake in baseball. It's sad that because of his past, Milton feels that he has to be more protective of himself, which just puts him in more of these situations. It's sad that our biggest offensive threat is no longer available to us.

But, I still have faith in this team. As others have pointed out, Hairston absolutely tore it up last week. And it's not like Bradley didn't play in the Colorado series. Even his bat wasn't able to save the team.

The loss of Bradley does not doom this team. Baseball is a team sport, and the Padres need to start winning as a team. Everyone's got to contribute, and everyone's got to play hard and play well.

So, buck up and charge hard. The boys should have all of the motivation in the world to go out and show everyone that they are a strong and powerful force. The loss of Bradley should only steel them into wanting to win in spite of his loss.

Let's go Padres. It's the friar, bitch.

So do you think
we can resign Milton at a discount?

Gonna be tough
Given that the Bradley vs. Black wrongful injury suit will probably be in court by Christmas.

Can you imagine?
I was thinking the same thing. What if he sues Bud and the Padres?

by Drama on Sep 24, 2007 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Not really that far out of the question
Could totally see his agent (who is his agent, btw?) telling him this is a way to recoup what he will now lose as a FA.

Buster Olney
He has a chat going on ESPN right now. This is how he sees the Helton side of it.

"It really is complicated for Helton. On one hand, if he speaks publicly about it, he could really put himself in a less than advantageous position with the umpires. On the other hand, if what Bradley and Bobby Meachem say happened actually happened, Helton is in a position to vindicate a fellow union member. If what Bradley and Meachem say is accurate, and Helton knows it, then what he could do is communicate with Bob Watson thusly: "On the record, I have nothing to say. Now, off the record -- ask me about what Bradley said and whether it's true." I'm sure it's not what Helton wants or needs right now, at a time when he's fighting for the first playoff appearance of his career."

by Drama on Sep 24, 2007 11:13 AM PDT reply actions

More from Olney's chat:
Discussing Winters:

"There's no doubt that Milton has a history of overreacting, and that should be considered. But the umpire also needs to be aware of all that, as well, and if Mike Winters actually called him a "piece of...", well, that means he has failed in his handling of the issue, at the very least, and at most, he has absolutely abused his position of authority. If Bradley's version is accurate, then Winters -- who I've always liked and respected -- should be suspended. And if it turns out that Winters filed a report that does not accurately account for what he said to Milton, well, he should be fired."

by Drama on Sep 24, 2007 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

There's a good and bad way to handle this
The Bad--Treat Bradley's injury as a Cubs/pre-2004 Red Sox fan would, as some sort of cosmic injustice.  Use the sense of Cosmic Injustice to justify complete and total futility. "Oh, if we'd only had Bradley, we would have won the World Series that year. Instead, we didn't make the playoffs."

The Good--Win. Win. Win.  And if it doesn't happen, well, there's a whole season's worth of reasons why we lost games we shouldn't have.  It doesn't rise and fall based on Milton's ACL.

I wish Milton was healthy.  He isn't. So I'm the world's biggest Scott Hairston fan--what an amazing feel good story that would be, him subbing in for an injured star and going on a post-season tear. Now that Rick Ankiel has fallen from grace, I'd like the world to meet Scotty H in a big, big way....

Hasn't anybody here seen Tombstone?
I'd like to see Buddy, Milton, Meachum and the Brother Giles** in a showdown at the OK Corral type confrontation vs. Mike Winters, Doug Eddings, and pick your other 2 least favorite umps.

in the parking lot, after the game, be there!

** Why not throw Bard into th mix? Just keep the pitchers out of it.

Championship
I watched Milton toss the bat.  He almost hit the bat boy, would've been hilarious, but it was not close to the ump.
Im callin a championship, what an event to motivate our team. We needed a vetran to step up and get us to the Series. Giles, Khalil, and Gonzo get hot tonight.
