Before we get upset, let's all just agree that St. Louis is a hole

As (St. Louis resident) thenerdhater points out, Matt Vasgersian, apparently thinking that nobody could hear him, trashed St. Louis.

8-06-07 Ninth inning Greene hits a double down the line and two fans go over wall to get the ball....Here is broadcast I taped it channel4San Diego...First they are called yahoos.......(Matt V.).........As one of the ozarks finest pours himself out of the grandstands.....pause...and by the way the Rams should still be in L.A.......Had it with this place already.....pause....get back in your el camino and drive back to the ozarks...........Then with Baird at bat Matt forgot to hit his cough switch in faint audio you here......Im done with this place...Im so tired of losing here.....Its hotter than shit......We get our asses kicked every time we come here .....Im not coming here next year.
That's awesome. You thought you were pissed about last night's loss? At least you weren't hanging out in hotter than shit heat, with El Camino driving Ozark hillbillies. Here's what I like about Vasgersian. He says what's on his mind. This is a little reminiscent of the infamous BEEYOTCH incident.

And also, (again apologies to thenerdhater) if any St. Louis fan wants to bust out with the "stay classy, San Diego" line, then sorry... Doesn't work. No longer classy. It's not like baseball fans in other cities are "classy". Name one group of baseball fans that can be deemed "classy". Don't exist.

If anybody has YouTube of this, I'd love to see it. I'm firing up MLB.tv right now.

Update [2007-8-7 10:54:25 by Dex]: MLB.tv has the St. Louis broadcast. No Padres broadcast for us. le sigh. I've never been to St. Louis, but I can imagine it's probably pretty hot. I beg to differ that we always get our asses kicked though. I seem to recall doing pretty well there in recent years as long as it wasn't the postseason.

Update [2007-8-7 16:59:11 by Dex]: As per Drama in the comments, Matt Vasgersian responded directly to Awful Announcing. I was totally behind Matt Vasgersian there for like all morning, until it dawned on me that he responds directly to Awful Announcing!? I know he's been kind with the occasional shout out to Gaslamp Ball, but ummm... Matty, we could use another diarist on Gaslamp Ball. I've never got an email from Matty. I should've been harder on the guy. le sigh.

I'm sorry inadvance for this...
...but "get back in your el camino and drive back to the ozarks" is damn funny.

I wish Matty and Mud would do some posting on GLB, because I know their sense of humor would fit right in.

God, that's great!
I think they should just let it out on air.  Why not, right?

Hehehe.  -snicker-  Hehehe.

PS - I was getting go Cards! texts
all last night from my "friend" the Cardinals fan, so I was feeling it.  Nothing against the city or the fans, specifically, just. . . .

Matty V
Stock is rising in my books.  I used to not care for him, but this finally put me on his side.
Damn!  I wish I was home last night watching the game.  Somebody has to have that.

with the kind of padres bashing crap on espn
where the announcers basically giggle themselves silly over our offense and seem to think the padres are somewhere in devil rays/royals distance of the playoffs....it would be nice to hear our hometown guys tear st. louis to shreds in the middle of a frustrating loss.

by goose1 on Aug 7, 2007 8:45 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

funny
It was funny, but what AA isn't focusing on, the reason for Matty's outburst was two f-ing morons diving down for a FAIR BALL and scooping it up.

Reaction...

Funny...
I've been going through some of the Cardinal and St. Louis blogs and Cardinal fan is LIVID with Matty.

Hot...
I was listening to Ted, Jerry and Andy last night, and they said that the A/C in the TV booth wasn't working and that it was about 120 degrees in there.  I can't blame him for the bad attitude.

Pawds at STL
Last year the Pawds were 2 out of 3 at STL, and in 2005 the Pawds were 3 out of 4.  In the reg season the Pawds have pwned the Cards in STL for a couple of years.

What is Matt smokin'?

I would go so far as to say...
...that Matt Vasgersian is the Ron Artest of broadcasting.

HaHaHaHaHaHa!
Drama, you're the Ron Artest of Gaslamp Ball!

Nah, I don't see it
Matt V. does not tend toward violence.  He is just another pencil-necked geek who never played the game...

I think he's a pretty good announcer for baseball, however, and his Pink Floyd rant on a home run once was epic.  He's just wrong on the facts about the Pawds always getting their asses kicked at STL.

by Spec20 on Aug 7, 2007 10:00 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fine
But you have to admit that Pink Floyd is the Ron Artest of rock groups.

St. Louis Arch
I missed the ninth inning rant, but in the beginning of the game Matty was going off on the Arch.  How it's a real tacky tourist trap or something.  I think he really just hates St. Louis.

by Jonny Dub on Aug 7, 2007 9:48 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've always thought
that it would be a great idea for HBO or Showtime to air baseball games just so the commentators could say whatever the eff they want. Imagine how great a booth would be with Vasgersian, Sutcliffe (his contract would require him to be drunk at all times) and maybe Bob Uecker along with Bob "You Wouldn't Think That Such A Soft-Spoken Genius Has Such A Filthy Mind" Costas.
Ah, for the days that we complained about our two hit victories...

Hmm...
I'm not sure Major League Baseball would grant their express written consent for something like that.

Implied oral consent, maybe...

My thoughts
Matty was probably frustrated that the Pads were getting beat by one of the worst teams in baseball right now.  Probably expanded because of the recent lack of luck the Pads have had against STL in the playoffs.

It was also incredibly hot and humid (one of the reasons I turned down tickets to the game).  St Louis weather is unbearably hot/humid in August and can make almost anyone cranky.

The El Camino/Ozark comments I think are just unimaginative slams that really don't affect any of the fans.  The last time I saw an El Camino was when I visited SoCal...think it's more indicative of a "trashy" SoCal car than one you'd find driving around the midwest.  The STL loser fan would probably be driving a rusted out Grand Am or some  Honda Civic that is Fast and Furious'd out.

Padre replays
I'm prety sure Time Warner shows Padre replays on one of the On Demand channels.  I'll check it tonight and see if I can grab the audio, I'm dieing to hear it.

by anthony on Aug 7, 2007 11:12 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought they did too...
It was on channel 144 last year, but there's nothing Padre-related on that channel anymore nor any other On Demand channels. Boo.

For the first time ever, it actually sounded to me as if Matt was pouting. It wasn't a genuine hating of St. Louis, nor was it completely absent of truth, and the comments about the Arch are proof to back that up. He was frustrated with the heat, and if the comments about the broken A/C are true, I'm stunned he didn't say more. Honestly, I kinda think he was pretty spot on, and was probably speaking for a number of Padre fans who are tired of Cardinal teams absolutely HOUSING the Pads when we've been the better team coming into the games.

Also, I always associate El Caminos with white trash from southern california as well, not the midwest...they're more like a 1994 F-250 with a roll cage in the back and some deer blood on the grill.

Record
Apparently the Padres are 18-41 over the last 60 games or something like that against the Cardinals.  I think that is what he was referring to, not necessarily just at a Busch.

by FUBYU on Aug 7, 2007 11:34 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard all of it.
And it was all said in a highly sarcastic way that only a moron (or somebody who just reads the transcript of what Matt said) could take as anything more than a joke.
But it was all true.  So there.

Matt was right...and wrong; but he's terrific
My perspective is of a 48-year STL resident and the last 4 years (by choice) as a San Diegan. STL is a great, great baseball city, but San Diego is a far better place to live (if you can afford it).  There's a reason STL is so affordable, but overall it's a pretty nice place....except in August, when it's so hot Jack Buck used to say "I saw a dog chasing a cat today.  They were both walking."  It's so unlivable in August that mail carriers in poor areas are advised to check on elderly people who haven't picked up their mail, to make sure they haven't been killed by the heat in the inner-city, brick pizza ovens of homes.  When it's 96 in an un-A/C'd booth and the team you're covering is getting smacked around, it's no fun.  I'm sure seeing that drunk, fat yahoo fall over the grandstand wall interfering with the ball in play just set Matt off. I think Matt and Mark are a terrific team and I really enjoy their work on Padres' games, but Matt really spoke some painful truths last night, calling the Gateway Arch "one of the most overrated cultural landmarks in the world", and his comments about the Ozarks and El Caminos, spurred by the slob falling onto the field.  Perhaps Matt still carries Midwestern yahoo memories of his days working for the Brewers.

Matty V reponds:
Vasgersian sent an email to AA/Deadspin to explain what happened last night:

Subject: Loving St. Louis!

Outstanding give and take fellas ... I'm digging all the grief this seems to have caused. As a loyal AA/Deadspin guy I'm actually pretty fired up to have landed on the radar here. In fairness to the sweaty Midwest, all that "St. Louis bashing" was for the benefit of the locals on our crew who like to ride us San Diegans about being slapped around by the Redbirds in the post-season every friggin' year. Not to mention I proudly rocked an El Camino back in the day myself. Keep blasting !!

Now if you'll excuse me there's a celebrity pull-my-finger tournament looking for a play-by-play guy.

Second Rate Announcer,

Matt Vasgersian

We know he reads Gaslamp Ball since he admitted to it right on the air, so maybe he'll respond to us if we do something really offensive!

.. not since 2004 .. that's when muds wife said she'd "had enough" (whatever) and I apparently started to snore.

You could do better anyway
Mudcat's got the cuddly physique, but Dennis Morgigno's got the sexy technique.

The reason that's a rhyme is so that Channel 4 groupies remember it when they're trying to figure who're they're going to land afterhours.
