Open Thread: 8/4, Padres vs. Giants

Associated Press

Barry Bonds shows off his gut while taking early batting practice for the first time in forever.  But he wasn't out there alone.  He's really gripping, but someone was there to ease his mind.  Someone was there that loves himself some Barry Bonds... Mike Cameron.

Padres star Mike Cameron came out to catch a glimpse at the end, giving Bonds a high-five behind the cage. They talked for several minutes.

I'm hoping that Hensley doesn't get too carried away trying to prove himself.  He really just needs to focus on winning this game and walk Bonds if he has to.  I trust Maddux going after Bonds, Hensley is a different story.  In his first start since his groin pull in the early season, he really doesn't need to get the idea in his head that he is jousting Bonds.

I always think it's weird when pitchers talk about going into history for giving up a big home run. Nobody remembers the pitchers. Who gave up the record breaking home run to Babe Ruth? Maris? Hell, who gave up #73 to Barry? Nobody knows and nobody cares. It's not about the pitchers and I think it's their egos that try to connect them to something great. They always say they don't want to be a part of history, but secretly they do.

P.S. -- Bradley is out again today because of his hamstring injury yesterday.

Experience it!!! Go Padres!!!

2-0 with Spidey
Don't be a hater.

Spidey can't get old
if he's kept fresh by being post like 10 times a game right?  I mean you can't over do something like this.

Drama, you could put him in your signature so that he'll show up in every comment you make.  That won't be annoying will it?

by jbox on Aug 4, 2007 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Have I pissed you off again, jbox?
Cuz that could not have been more of a dick comment.

Pitchers making history...
I'll never forget Eric Show sitting on the mound after giving up number 4,192 to Pete Rose.

by Drama on Aug 4, 2007 6:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And I remember.....
Eric Show basically getting into a shoving match in the dugout with Carmelo Martinez, the Leftfielder that night, because he thought Melo coulda charged the ball to keep his name out of the record books (at least for 1 AB).

Hensley and Steroids
Hensley taking steroids being brought up again.
While Bonds has been shadowed by suspicions of steroid use for several years, which some fans feel has tainted his chase for Hank Aaron's home run record, Hensley got caught when he was in the minor leagues.

In April 2005, Hensley was one of four Padres farmhands who were suspended for 15 games for using performance-enhancing substances, either steroids or steroid precursors.

Appaently, "the Padres deemed his shirt offensive", so SDPD followed him from the bathroom back to his seat and told him he either had to take it off, turn it inside out, or leave the ballpark.

The REAL bummer is that he was part of a group of 30 that were ALL wearing the shirt, and they were ALL given the same 3 options!!

Two years ago on Opening Day. This picture was on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Since then, apparently the Padres have decided that when you enter Petco Park, your Freedom of Speech rights must stay outside the gates.

Last night, he tried to bring that same sign in... security guy at the gate called his supervisor, had to read the sign to him over the radio, and then was told (and told Steve) that the sign couldn't come in.

Good news... we said "Fuck it" and handed the sign under the gate by the playground in the Park at tha Park.

I guess you don't have ESPN?
Pre-game, he went over, did the whole hand shake hug thing, and proceeded to chit chat about tea and cookies.

Its more of the fact Peavy went up to him to start a chat.

I have ESPN
but I am watching on Channel 4. Its not even on ESPN here.
Jake is just a nice guys I guess, like to talk. But I am not hearing what you all are hearing. Im with Matt and Mark.

Peavy being a good ol southern boy
but does he have to be buddy buddy with Barry?!?!

by bktabinga on Aug 4, 2007 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's kinda understandable
I'm no fan of Barry Bonds but I can see why a man (such as Jake Peavy) would want a personal memory of history. Asterisk or not, it'll still always be in the books.

While in Coopestown
Walking through the Hall of Fame, I found it interesting that in one of the exhibits, there were copies of a few "official letters" that were sent from the MLB office to all teams while Sandy Alderson was there.

One of them spoke on the subject of fraternization and reminded organizations that there is a rule in place AGAINST fraternization.

Rule #3.09 was directly quoted in that letter (note the last line):

Players in uniform shall not address or mingle with spectators, nor sit in the stands before, during, or after a game. No manager, coach or player shall address any spectator before or during a game. Players of opposing teams shall not fraternize at any time while in uniform.

Side note... also kind of amusing that the same rule speaks to interaction with fans.

by jpleeg2 on Aug 4, 2007 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats weird
Cause the players are always talking to the fans before the game. Maybe there is a time frame or something.

ESPN won't let up.
Orel is rabid! This is nice... except for them showing Padres fraternizing with that size 8 non-Bochy.
Now Hershiser's talking about how you have to keep silent when you know your teammate is shooting up drugs that are manufactured for the sole purpose of succeeding at baseball.

what a win, huh? in the ensuing years, people will remember that Bonds hit his record-tying HR here...but WE will remember that we won the game. and that we won it on hustle and heart, with a sac bunt and a sweet first pitch swing from our own Vulcan.

you'd think his voice would be less girly and be much deeper. but then again, isn't that what steroids do to men?

by the way, i vote that big gay spidey stay for good :)

This press conference is bizarre
He gives props to Gonzalez saying he would have 30 HR's in another park.

Then says to bring in the fences at Petco...yeah Barry, so the other teams could compete with the Pads.

Just got back from the game
Bonds and the Giants can have their milestone, we got the win.  I don't think 755/756 is a meaningless milestone, but I don't think it'll mean a whole lot down the road, either, regardless of whether or not A-Rod breaks the eventual record.

When Bonds hit the HR, I didn't cheer, didn't boo.  I'm not a fan of the guy, and I've booed him my share in the past, but it didn't feel right to get into a booing/cheering match with the Giants fans.  I don't think I've ever booed a guy hitting a HR before, so why start now.

Plus, with everything else that's going on with baseball and sports in general, Bonds is a jerk, and probably a cheating jerk, but there's a lot out there that's more deserving of our scorn.  Compared to a guy like Leonard Little, Barry's a saint.  Hell, I have more of a problem with LaRussa driving drunk than I do Barry doing steroids.  In the grand scheme of things, it's just hard for me to get all that worked up about his cheating.

In the end, we got the W, and that's what I was there to see.

by Boy Howdy on Aug 5, 2007 12:27 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

My response was the same
I just sat there in silence.  Each time he went up I gave him a big thumbs down as usual.  I was pissed that it happened in our house but oh well.  My wife and I felt bad for Lil Clay Hensley but  it's not like anyone's gonna remember who gave up the tying jack, and now that I find out he did roids too it's kinda fitting.  I was VERY surprised that the majority of the crowd was cheering, I really didn't expect that at all.  Glad we ended up winning that long, long game.
Did anyone hear Leitner's call of the HR?
