Smells Like Padres in Here - Friday Edition

Many thanks to Drama for filling in yesterday while I was busy.

Three out of four is pretty damn good.

Bell wants to follow in Trevor's footsteps.

A story on the Cassel brothers.

Some thoughts from Boomer on tonight's game.

If anyone's going to Sunday's game, we're gonna need pictures of this.

They do the chihauha
races every year. Pretty amusing stuff. I'll be there on Sunday, but not for that. I'll be there to see my boys reclaim first place.

Bell
Heath Bell was on Scott & BR earlier this morning.  He seems like such a cool guy.  I feel bad for referring to him as Thunder Thighs, TT for short.

Don't feel bad.
I called them "Earl Campbell Thighs".

I heard him too
He did sound cool; wry sense of humor too.

As for Boomer having his uni ripped off, hopefully, that is something no-one will ever have to see!

Question: WG / TTG / D / et al
What is the name of that pitcher that got pissed at his team coz they wouldn't retaliate about something that had happened in a previous game and just threw every pitch at each and every batter until they yanked him?  I got it in my head he was a pirate?  Retired but still with us...  somebody posted an article/link awhile ago.  Thnx

Dock Ellis
Also threw a no-hitter while on LSD.  He was indeed a Pirate.

Before WG beats me to it
This week's installment of meaningless power rankings. The Padres held onto thier #4 spot, making them the best in the NL. The Dodgers are rated WAAAAAYYY too highly in my opinion. They played one playoff contender in the last week and fared decently. The Padres (and hell, even the D'Backs) played two contenders last week and fared well (the D'backs against the Cubs, not so much against us - the way it should be!)

Thoughts?

Regardless, it's hillarious to read the comments over there. People get so indignant.

Keith Law......
from his chat today
"Richard, EL Segundo, Ca.: Hi Keith, I researched all the Food Networks past and present "Chefs" the best I could and there was no one I would rather look at than Giada. Do you think the Yankees can trade Mussina in the off season to an NL West or Central team, who just may believe then can fix him? If so what could he garner in return seeing as the Yankees can and will eat some $$$?

: (2:12 PM ET ) Funny you mentioned that - I think he'd be an ideal pickup for San Diego. His stuff is below-average, obviously, but so are most of the Padres' pitchers (especially in their pen), and they succeed because of the home park and the overall pitcher-friendly schedule.
L

-he denies hating the padres, but he has stated repeaditely that there pitchers are not good and hitters are not good.

He then talks about how Webb is the Cy Young winner, and the D-back have the better team.  The only reason San Diego is "Competitive" is because of the ballpark.  Also Kouz sucks, and our farm system sucks.  He also likes Illinois Nazis.

more from the chat
Chris (NYC): Can you elaborate on why you think PETCO gives the Padres a significant competitive advantage, beyond that which any other home team might have in their ballpark?

Keith Law: (3:26 PM ET ) I think the Padres have realized that pitchers can pitch off their fastballs a lot more in Petco because it's so hard to hit the ball out of that park, so they've tailored their player-acquisition strategy to build their pitching staff, especially the pen, around guys who have either below-average velocity or below-average movement on their FBs, but who do other things well (good control, good K rates). Since those players tend to be 4-A types in other organizations, they can acquire them cheaply and focus resources elsewhere on the roster. And in Linebrink's case, they fooled another team into thinking his Petco-influenced stats were real.

Keith Law
I wonder why people pay attention to him? His bio reads he spent 4½ years with the Toronto Blue Jays as a Special Assistant to the General Manager. Doing what, wiping ass and holding the piss bucket? C'mon I don't think he's anymore qualified to a be an analyst any more than you or I.

He's clearly an idiot
It's not like Padres have the best pitching stats in baseba...oh wait, we do.

It's not like the Padres can hit on the road, since they're such a cra....oh wait, nevermind.

The guy is a tool and an idiot.

Waiver Trade Deadline
Anyone hear anything about maybe getting a pitcher?

Posted Above
Trachsel is a Cub.

That's the ONLY pitcher I woulda been even a little interested in, and even he was a stretch.

Matty V Coming Back
Just read this snippet in the UT

Matt Vasgersian and Channel 4 San Diego have exercised a mutual contract option for 2008, meaning Vasgersian and Mark Grant will be together for a seventh season.

Glad to see he's staying!!
