Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Monday Thoughts

  • Would Michael Vick be better off if he were eating the dogs that got killed? At that point, how is that different from people who hunt or fish? You're using animals for sport, and then eating them in delightful curry dishes.

  • Would we have been better off insulting David Wells over and over again before each start? It seems to me that when he's offended, back to the wall, he steps up. I blame Bud Black for not calling him out for being fat and useless before gametime.

  • Should they just go ahead and allow certain types of gambling in the MLB and then determine the standings by which GM was able to make the most money in a year? Like when Padres batter falls behind, 0-2, I'd like to see KT come out and challenge the other team's GM and say, "I bet you my guy gets on base right here... $1000 straight up". It would add a level of intrigue never before seen legally in the MLB.

Wells didn't pitch particularly well...
...honestly, that was just like his starts with SD. I'd be sweating bullets every time he pitches if I were a Dodgers fan.

Oh I didn't think he pitched that great...
I was just thinking that we should've spent more time insulting him while he was here.

Just kidding. I think Padres fans insult the Padres enough probably.

Ah, there I go again being dense...
And I agree that we probably do insult the Padres enough already.

by Geoff on Aug 27, 2007 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

if you read Wells' book....
you'd know that every time his back felt good he's good for a quality start.

(gotta love that kind of arrogance)

you'd also know that he doesn't intend to jump around from team to team playing for the veteran's minimum and generally being labeled as a "mediocre pitcher at best".  he's going to retire with pride and dignity when he still has something left in the tank.  just like Koufax.

wait....what?

Watching that game last night,
seeing Wells in a Dodgers uniform made me kind of sad. Not so much that he was a Dodger as much as he's just hanging on until he's no longer wanted by anyone; it's a sad ending for one of the game's great characters. Much like Piazza being the only Dodger I ever liked, Boomer was the only Yankee whose uniform I didn't hold against him and I was thrilled when each of them became Padres. I will always have the memories of their glories but attached to that will be their pathetic final showings- Boomer getting shelled as a Dodger (or something else next year) and Piazza hitting under .250 with Geoff Blum power numbers for whoever gives him a roster spot next year. Some would call these men true competitors for holding on so long to the game they love but when I think of a true competitor, I think of someone who knew it was time to hang 'em up when they could no longer perform at the level they and everyone else was accustomed to- guys like Sandy Koufax and the great Joey Cora.

whoa buddy
Koufax didn't "know it was time to hang 'em up".  He retired in his prime.  His last year he went 27-9 (in 41 starts) with an ERA of 1.73.

Sandy started getting a little bit of arthritis during his final year and decided that he'd rather have no pain in his 50s and 60s than have a long career.  now Sandy comes to somebody's training camp each year (sometimes Dodgers, sometimes Mets) and strikes out star players at the ripe age of 72.  i guess he knew what he was doing.

I thought
it was more of a pride thing like "Well, at this point I'm not gonna top that." Plus, I just wanted to make a favorable comparison between Joey Cora and a hall of famer.

Koufax
was one of the best pitchers who ever lived, but he just didn't have a love for the game.  as i hear it, he loves his family and golf over everything else in the world.  he never had Wells passion and that certainly shows.

Joey Cora had hall-of-fame stubble.  i bet he had a five o'clock shadow 10 minutes after shaving.

Money was an issue!!!!!!
If Sandy was could make $15M a year, he would have played.

People forget that the times were different and it is hard to compare the actions of one from one era to another.

Golf is one of the worst because of what Tiger Woods has won over his career (for the record I think he is the best ever or the best I have ever seen), but don't get carried away with career acomplishments.

Bobby jones quit playing golf when he was 26, because he could feed his family and took a job as a lawyer. Byron Nelson won 11 tournaments in a row and used the money to buy a cattle ranch, for his "real career".

Sandy made good money $167,000 for his last year pitching with the Dodgers, but immedietly after he retired at his "peak" he signed a $1M deal with NBC.  He also made much more money with the numerous other businesses he owned.

Yeah
Koufax was incredibly shrewd about money.  He and Drysdale were instrumental in paving the road to free agency for players.

He didn't have "a little arthritis."  The guy could barely move his arm in between starts.  It was grotesque.

Vick
I think Vick should start a cat fighting ring next.

F the NFL.....expand out into a new league.

by thenerdhater on Aug 27, 2007 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

that might
actually work. dogs are considered domestic pets, but cats are not so i don't think that's gonna be too much of a problem. i mean, if you can run over them and not be obligated to stop your car, then i certainly think you can fight 'em.

... i'd never actually do that, but if vick's looking for another option, he should probably look to the cats. haha.

As a devoted cat owner
there's one critical problem with this theory:

Cat's won't do anything just because they're trained to do it. Hell, have you ever tried to train a cat to do anything? I'm amazed that my cats ever decided that shitting in a gravel-filled box wasn't beneath them.

If there was ever a cat fighting ring, the majority of the fighting would be between humans and their cats, and not the cats themselves.

by Phantom on Aug 27, 2007 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

haha
what if the fighting actually was between the owner and the cat?

i wanna see that... sort of.

Method
Just get some rope, tie two cat's tails together..then fling em over a hung clothesline.  They'll scratch and claw while hanging upside down.

Either that, or throw two cats into a pillow case and tie it shut until one escapes victoriously.

by thenerdhater on Aug 27, 2007 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Or...
if the goal is to kill cats, why bother making them fight each other?

It could just be a contest between owners... see how many cats one person could drown in an hour, and then try to break that record!

by pjbno4 on Aug 27, 2007 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I like the way you think
Maybe it'd be a combo.  You had to drown as many cats as possible before one of the "fighting" cats died.

We're going to hell for this....somewhere, some PETA  dummy is taking this seriously

by thenerdhater on Aug 27, 2007 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Forget PETA!
I'll send you to hell personally!!! Stop with the killing cats scenarios! Makes me want to run home and hug my purring babies to protect them.

Crazy cat lady
I had to laugh at that.  I always tell my sons that is what I will become someday...and I don't even like cats.

Why aren't there any crazy cat guys?

by teemcee on Aug 27, 2007 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Believe me
I am no advocate of cat-on-cat violence. If anything, I think there needs to be more cat-on-dumbass-human violence.

And I myself am the proud compnaion(cats don't have owners) to four amazingly different cats. Coupled with my neighbors three cats, all of which are indoor/outdoor like ours, I have to be careful not to run over any of the seven whenever I'm pulling in and out of our garage.

by Phantom on Aug 27, 2007 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I would agree with that!
the cat on dumbass human violence that is :-) Oh, and that cats don't have owners. Companion works - as long as that is defined as chef, maid, and personal groomer! Which reminds me - it is time to spread some flea treatment on them. Oh, how they hate that!

my neighbor had a cat
and my dog ate it. No joke, the cat came in through the dog door, looked at my dog and froze...wish it just ran away.

Another Monday Thought
Arizona won its series with the Cubs, yet AGAIN got outscored. WTF!!! This team is having the most logically ass backwards season. How the fuck do they keep it up? The world may never know.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Aug 27, 2007 3:17 PM PDT reply actions

it has to be the work
of Satan, has to be.

Arizona has always done this, they had all their success by spending MORE money than they make and had to get bailed out by the commish. Why no one makes a bigger deal out of this I will never know.  Must be some code by the owners.
