Open Thread: 8/26, Padres vs. Phillies

Jon and I ran a little race this morning and we were taking a bus back to the start line.  We were talking about how bad it must suck to be in the minor leagues and taking buses all over the league.  How do you take an eleven hour bus ride in the middle of the night then get off and play your best baseball?  That's gotta be one of the biggest motivating factors when you're sent down from the bigs.  No wonder Hensley hates it down there and realizes he took his time in the majors for granted. Which brings up the point, Hensley was sent down to make room for Stauffer. He can't be brought up again for ten days. Our bus ride was only like 10 minutes and we couldn't wait to get off.

Early game today for all the west coasters.  Game starts at 10:35 and it's Tim "Boy Wonder" Stauffer vs. Kendrick.

Keep winning!  Go Padres.

Odds on Bradley getting HBP?
I think they gotta be kind of high. he's on fire and talking smack. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets plunked.
He's also breathed some life into a team which I had a hard time finding out who was the team leader prior to his arrival.
I won't say he's the leader yet, but it appears he can get some folks to rally around him.

by LF Lurking on Aug 26, 2007 10:25 AM PDT   0 recs

I'm not sure
I agree the odds are high - but the Phillies really need to win this game - that has to be their focus.  If the game's a runaway early for either side, then he's probably gonna get hit.  But if it's close, I don't think they can afford to do it.

And my guess is that the umpiring crew apprised both teams that they won't put up with anything today.

Dang
Wish we'd given Stauffer that 11 run lead again.

lol
It's early. We need to get warmed up and get going.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 10:46 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The ball Burrell
hit was a really good pitch. It was low and away and Pat went out and got it.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 10:52 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Stauffer is amazing!
We're gonna get out of this!

by jbox on Aug 26, 2007 10:54 AM PDT   0 recs

Nice pitches Timmy!
If he can get out of this with just one run, that's gonna be huge.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 10:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

poop
Groundball just finds a hole.

are they really chanting
"you suck bradley"

by pads44 on Aug 26, 2007 11:02 AM PDT   0 recs

I thought they were saying
"you suck maddux" but I knew they weren't.

by jbox on Aug 26, 2007 11:03 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I went back
I think you are right, "you suck bradley" chant.

by jbox on Aug 26, 2007 11:06 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought for sure
that single by werth was our way out of the inning, it looked like it was going to go to Khalil.  Plenty of game left though.

by jbox on Aug 26, 2007 11:07 AM PDT   0 recs

Yep
Really not a bad inning by Tim. He got unlucky on some of those balls put in play.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:08 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice work
Sledge. Way to regress to the mean.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:09 AM PDT   0 recs

Quis
Afraid to say "retarded". Funny.

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:10 AM PDT   0 recs

Can't walk the opposing pitcher
on four pitches to lead off an inning. That's no good.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:14 AM PDT   0 recs

Okay
well, at least we went 4-2 on the trip.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:19 AM PDT   0 recs

Jeez
I just turn this game on and it's already over!

by Jonny Dub on Aug 26, 2007 11:19 AM PDT   0 recs

Okay, cut it out, Stauffer.
That's no good at all.

We have no one better than Stauffer?
I guess he's providing his services--sucking--for less than Boomer was costing us.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

At worst
They could've tried anyone else.  They know what they're getting every time they run Stauffer out there.  He's had far too many chances and failed all of them.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:23 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Why not 3 innings each from Hampson, Brocail, Cam
Or Ledezma.  Stauffer is terrible. Mike Thompson is terrible. Why put a guy who tends to give up homeruns on the mound in this tiny ballpark?

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think it's out of reach
the way things have been going lately.

What a brilliant decision by management.
Let's start an absolute piece of shit pitcher so he can get murdered before the scond inning is even over. Now our bullpen will have to pitch a ton of innings the day before we start THE BIGGEST SERIES OF THE SEASON.

I say screw him...this game is over. Let him pitch all nine innings. The next four games mean more to me than a guy they should have cut after he shit his pants in Houston with an 11 run lead.

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:23 AM PDT   0 recs

Totally agree
I don't care if takes him 300 pitches to get out of the game.  Let him stay him and then release him.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:24 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly.
I don't even want him on the same plane as the rest of the team.

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:26 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Stauffer Complete game? I don't want ESPN
playing that all night long.  Can you say Rangers-Orioles?

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:25 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd rather see that
then an implosion in the next four games.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What's worse?
Giving up 30 runs? Or exhausting your bullpen before a four-game series against the team that is two games in front of you?

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Bullpen, exhaustion clearly. But....
30 runs is still sort of unbelievable.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes it is.
But I care more about winning the division and getting home field advantage in the playoffs than I care about Stuart Scott making fun of us on Sportscenter.

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:31 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know
Stauffer appears completely capable of giving up more than 30 runs in nine innings.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:31 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I mean
right now he's on pace to give up 27.  If he can just suck a little more - and I think we all know he can - the record is his.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:32 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Keep him out there forever
Or we just pack up our bags and leave.  Why do you have to play 9 innings anyway.

by Jonny Dub on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

At least he can bunt.
Iknow, I know; I'm reaching...

Sidenote on Boomer
How do we feel about facing him?

Our record against old, wily soft-tossing lefties (Glavine, Moyer) is pretty good lately.  After watching those two games, I'm not that worried about Boomer...

Plus I read that the Padres have scored more runs in the 5th inning this year than any other inning.  And we all know when Boomer starts to implode.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:32 AM PDT   0 recs

We've scored 7 or 8 runs a game on this road trip
So stauffer has, like, 1 run left before I'm going to call it out of reach.

C'mon timmy--how about 6 shutout innings?

I almost typed that with a straight face.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:35 AM PDT   0 recs

I'm really anxious
to hear the rest of the Tuffy The Toro story.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:37 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Awww, come on, Stauffer
Throwing one shutout inning will NOT get you to 31 runs.

COME ON!! GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!!!

Get the pizza Quis!
I think we need a GLB shirt that alludes to this.

Mini rally
blooming here. If we can start to cut the lead down, good things can happen.

Except Sledge is up.

Horrible call
on the 2-0 pitch to Sledge.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:41 AM PDT   0 recs

Sledge gets the "Roger Dorn" award
like in Major League.  Get up there and lean into one...it's the only way you're going to get into the game.

2 Days
2 Dorn references

right there. Adrian f'ed that up.

god damn it
can we just NOT swing at the first pitch, ever.  no matter how good it looks.  just wait!

by LJbumfool on Aug 26, 2007 11:44 AM PDT   0 recs

How is that fucking strike?
Horrible call on the 2-0

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:45 AM PDT   0 recs

Mud is exactly right
LaForest had to swing at the 2-1, stupid umpiring.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:46 AM PDT   0 recs

Yup
Same BALL he called a strike on Sledge.... Sledge also flailed at the next pitch in the same spot and fouled it into the crowd.

He was just lucky enough to get hit on the pitch after that.

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 11:47 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Damn it, Pete.

Pete got hosed
in that AB. Horrible call on the 2-0 completely changed the complexion of that AB.

Saving the bullpen I guess
with 2 outs, putting in a pinch hitter--who might do nothing anyway--means we have 6 innings to eat.

That was a big chance we just squandered.  Even 2 runs changes the way the game looks.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:51 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Totally Agree
If it was bases loaded with 0 or 1 outs, then I think we woulda seen a PH

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 11:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Damnit guys
We could have made this a game right there. Stupid of Adrian not to go (stupid of Kouz to swing first pitch) and then the umpire makes Kendrick's life easy on the LaForest AB. Stupid.

by Phantom on Aug 26, 2007 11:48 AM PDT   0 recs

I will say
in Kouz's defense, he has a pretty good track record when swinging at the first pitch with the bases loaded.
