Open Thread: 8/26, Padres vs. Phillies

Jon and I ran a little race this morning and we were taking a bus back to the start line.  We were talking about how bad it must suck to be in the minor leagues and taking buses all over the league.  How do you take an eleven hour bus ride in the middle of the night then get off and play your best baseball?  That's gotta be one of the biggest motivating factors when you're sent down from the bigs.  No wonder Hensley hates it down there and realizes he took his time in the majors for granted. Which brings up the point, Hensley was sent down to make room for Stauffer. He can't be brought up again for ten days. Our bus ride was only like 10 minutes and we couldn't wait to get off.

Early game today for all the west coasters.  Game starts at 10:35 and it's Tim "Boy Wonder" Stauffer vs. Kendrick.

Keep winning!  Go Padres.

Odds on Bradley getting HBP?
I think they gotta be kind of high. he's on fire and talking smack. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets plunked.
He's also breathed some life into a team which I had a hard time finding out who was the team leader prior to his arrival.
I won't say he's the leader yet, but it appears he can get some folks to rally around him.

by LF Lurking on Aug 26, 2007 10:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure
I agree the odds are high - but the Phillies really need to win this game - that has to be their focus.  If the game's a runaway early for either side, then he's probably gonna get hit.  But if it's close, I don't think they can afford to do it.

And my guess is that the umpiring crew apprised both teams that they won't put up with anything today.

Wish we'd given Stauffer that 11 run lead again.

The ball Burrell

At worst
They could've tried anyone else.  They know what they're getting every time they run Stauffer out there.  He's had far too many chances and failed all of them.

Why not 3 innings each from Hampson, Brocail, Cam
Or Ledezma.  Stauffer is terrible. Mike Thompson is terrible. Why put a guy who tends to give up homeruns on the mound in this tiny ballpark?

What a brilliant decision by management.
Let's start an absolute piece of shit pitcher so he can get murdered before the scond inning is even over. Now our bullpen will have to pitch a ton of innings the day before we start THE BIGGEST SERIES OF THE SEASON.

I say screw him...this game is over. Let him pitch all nine innings. The next four games mean more to me than a guy they should have cut after he shit his pants in Houston with an 11 run lead.

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree
I don't care if takes him 300 pitches to get out of the game.  Let him stay him and then release him.

Exactly.
I don't even want him on the same plane as the rest of the team.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's worse?
Giving up 30 runs? Or exhausting your bullpen before a four-game series against the team that is two games in front of you?

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bullpen, exhaustion clearly. But....
30 runs is still sort of unbelievable.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Drama on Aug 26, 2007 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know
Stauffer appears completely capable of giving up more than 30 runs in nine innings.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean
right now he's on pace to give up 27.  If he can just suck a little more - and I think we all know he can - the record is his.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep him out there forever
Or we just pack up our bags and leave.  Why do you have to play 9 innings anyway.

Sidenote on Boomer
How do we feel about facing him?

Our record against old, wily soft-tossing lefties (Glavine, Moyer) is pretty good lately.  After watching those two games, I'm not that worried about Boomer...

Plus I read that the Padres have scored more runs in the 5th inning this year than any other inning.  And we all know when Boomer starts to implode.

by goose1 on Aug 26, 2007 11:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We've scored 7 or 8 runs a game on this road trip
So stauffer has, like, 1 run left before I'm going to call it out of reach.

C'mon timmy--how about 6 shutout innings?

I almost typed that with a straight face.

Saving the bullpen I guess
with 2 outs, putting in a pinch hitter--who might do nothing anyway--means we have 6 innings to eat.

That was a big chance we just squandered.  Even 2 runs changes the way the game looks.

I will say
in Kouz's defense, he has a pretty good track record when swinging at the first pitch with the bases loaded.

He had a 17 ERA coming in after that Astros game.  Why, oh, why would you start a guy who almost blew an 11 run lead?

And it's not like he's been unlucky. He's just awful. Behind in every single count. Walks. Hit batsmen. Home runs.  JUST TERRIBLE

because Stauffer blows and he should have at the very least pinch hit for him with the bases loaded and at the time only a 5 run deficit. I mean really look at the guys ERA, especially now...plus on bard?  we have a minor league battery against major league hitters in a hitter's park. the fuck is bud black smoking? I know you never really concede a game, but I wouldn't want decent arms getting used at this point. I think it's just as good of a time as any for Mike and Milt to rest and Stan to see some action.

Blum-Mackowiak-Sledge in OF
Wow. That's all I can say.

I don't blame Bud really.  It isn't his fault CY's back is acting up.  We already took 2 tough series on the road and we've got the divisional match-ups coming up, which are more important anyway.  So, you throw Stauffer out there, knowing he doesn't give you great odds for a win.  And once it gets ugly, well, you rest some guys and that's that.

If Kouz wasn't swinging first pitch with the bases loaded, and if a BS strike zone hadn't killed Laforest, then it might be a little closer about now.

This is truly ugly, though.

Not in-laws
just plain ol' parents and brothers. They don't even blink at my idiocy.

I never
walk away from a Padres game in progress.

this game is testing my limits; really tugging at the fabric of my soul.

Run differential
I guess this is one of those games that illustrates  how the D-Backs can still win while allowing more runs than they score.  We won 2 games in New York by a total of 3 runs, lost one by 1 run, won last night by 1 run.  But now we're conceding runs left and right because we've conceded the game, basically.

This road trip we've scored 41 (including today)  We've allowed 39 so far (including today).  It seems pretty likely we're going to go 4-2 on this trip while getting outscored.

Do the Bill James numbers and the Pythagorean stuff take into account these blow-outs that skew the numbers? Just curious. i don't know much about this stuff.

Maybe the Phillies will break
the Rangers record today. At least we would be part of history

Why the hell
is Cla warming up?

I'm really not upset about how this game has gone
It got away from us quickly, so we concede this game and rev up for the games back home. I also don't think this hurts our momentum or anything like that. I think everyone pretty much recognizes this one for what it is. We already took the series, which was the most important thing.

my vote is for
morgan ensberg to pitch the rest of the game and hit in the 9 spot

by Ender on Aug 26, 2007 12:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This kind of loss probably has less effect
than a close hard fought one in extra innings.  The laughers I figure you just write off, but I can't imagine they get you down as much as, say, the loss the first night to the Mets where we couldn't hold a lead.

Let's hope the Pads put this behind them when we start the Arizona-Dodgers homestand.

Watching Stauffer pitch
makes me long for the dominating days of Dewon Brazelton.

yeah
his ERA was in the mighty-fine area of 10 or 11

if black takes out cla
then this game is a complete waste and detrimental

He BETTER take out Cla
Rather than burn him in the this game and make him useless for tomorrow.

i was joking
in a blowout like this I suppose I was referring to the significance of that hit in comparison to a walk and a cather's indifference.

if Bud Black
didn't want to use our bullpen, why is everybody warming up and coming into the game? Where were they in the fourth?

by Ender on Aug 26, 2007 12:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn't want to use more than he had to
Using guys for one inning is much different than using them for multiple innings, when that would've stressed the pen for the rest of the upcoming week.

Four games against Arizona.  Just a bit more important than a finale against the Phillies.

i'm going to go a bit off topic due to the blowout
but I would surely hope that all of you would agree that Milton Bradley should be a Padre next year. No?

by Ender on Aug 26, 2007 12:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely.
I say one year deal with a club option.

yeah
if he's really a "position player" or utility player he should be able to pitch too to make up for his pitcher's batting average

Mark Grant

Nah
That would've left Pepe Negro the option of using him later...

Did I just hear that right?
They sent Hensley down again and he's not available for recall for 10 days?

That is one really screwed up move.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 1:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Roster technicality
Check out Clay's response in the diary I just posted...

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I did
And I disagree completely.  It's a bad roster move.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But technically
They COULD put Stauffer on the DL, which would allow Clay to be recalled.

I just don't like Clay's attitude about it.  He hasn't shown his stuff yet to prove that he's anything more than a flash in the pan.

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

One bad start in the last four
I'd be pissed, too, if I saw a guy like Ledezma sticking around.

He didn't complain the first time it happened.  I totally understand why he's pissed now.

And, in my eyes, as I've said before, this has become a personal thing with Hensley and someone.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do see
Where you're coming from WG.....

And I agree that it has become, to a degree, a personal thing between Clay and someone <cough, cough, KT>

BUT, I also don't know if Clay would like to be the long reliever/mop-up guy in the bullpen who only comes in when we are down by a ton.

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

so
who's the #5 guy then?

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 26, 2007 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No clue
Don't have all the answers, nor would I ever claim to.

But, I just don't like his K/BB ratio. That will do NOTHING to endear you to this team (and organization).

I haven't taken part in the "Who should we call up from the minors to take that spot" discussion, but I have seen the names brought up.

Honestly, I'd give Hampson a shot. I'd rather have him pitch 5 than Clay, Stauffer, or Thompson right now. And that's the max that any of them are "good" for.

by jpleeg2 on Aug 26, 2007 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hampson
This year, just to focus on one item....

40 innings pitched, 15 walks
