Revolution

You know how I'd revolutionize the game of baseball?  Let me tell you...

I was noticing a couple of days ago that Mets fans became upset with Chris Young for throwing over to first base trying to hold the runner.  The reason is understandable they want the game to progress and pitchers are thought to be just stalling when they throw over.

So my idea is that whenever a runner reaches base they are handed a miniature souvenir bat by their first base coach.  When the pitcher throws over the runner can take a swing at the throw with the mini bat and try to knock it away so he can advance.  The runner can also jab the miniature bat in the first basemen's ribs or tickle him with it.  I think this would keep pitchers from needlessly throwing over to first and add a little bit of excitement for the fans.

I'm telling you this would revolutionize the game.

Can he hit the 1B
regardless of whether the P throws over or ONLY if the P throws over?

Wouldn't this necessitate
having people you don't consider star players at first? I'd be pissed off if Jose Reyes got to whack Adrian in the knee every time CY threw over.

lol
I was thinking the exact same thing. Basically, whoever screwed up the nite before gets first base duties. Whomever pitches opens the game with a HBP, just to irritate the runner a little more. Then, he throws 10 straight balls to first.

After that, we can put in our regular guy and go from there.

I totally would have loved to see Maddux pitch with Linebrink at first...

Nice
I love this idea so much.  I expect to see Blum at 1B tonight.

excellent
But there should be some risk for the runner/mini-batter: if he swings and misses it counts as a strike on the batter.

I was thinking the same thing
That'd really piss the batter off.

"Stop messing with that Mini Bat, I keep striking out because of you!"

this would
make Ichiro the greatest player of all time.  he would just single himself around the bases.  the Mariners would be unbeatable!

i want to know if there would be such a thing as a foul ball or a home run in this system.
