Sandy Alderson Interview

People wanted me to give a summary of the Alderson interview today so here it is. There was a lot more but this was only a summary of an hour long interview.

I was kind of zoning in and out but this is what I remember:

  1. Sandy is not mad at Jake for discussing the stuff he did
  2. Jake gave Sandy a heads up about what he had said before it got relseased; Sandy wasnt mad
  3. There is no 'right' time to talk about contracts
  4. Mexico brings the Padres no revenue
  5. The payroll will increase to $70 mil by the end of the year
  6. Now is not the time to extend Jake but it is not out of the question
  7. Seattle's TV revenue is 6 times that of the Padres (thats why they can sign Ichiro. He said this because people are asking "Why can Seattle sign Ichiro but the Padres cant sig Jake?" Becasue Seattle and SD are kinda similar
  8. Alderson has won a Championship before on a team that did not have the biggest payroll
  9. The Padres payroll is like 26 in the rankings
  10. Moores just gave the Padres $14 million CASH.. and will give $2 million more
  11. Smaller contracts are better
  12. Giants with Zito and Bonds are almost burdened by the large contracts
  13. Jake timing wont hurt the mood of the clubhouse
  14. "If we dont have a good team, if we dont have a good product, then we dont have good customers" -Alderson
  15. Big people bring big revenue (uhh...Jake?)
  16. Padres have very loyal fans but they need to remember we are not in the same market as NY and Boston. But he will try to give us the best.
  17. Love to have a higher run producing lineup
  18. There is no one in this market more eager to make change (ie: attain new people)
  19. Someone came on the phone questioning, just like Jake, the managements eagerness to win a championship. They mentioned competitiveness and how in 98 we were promised being really competitive and how we havent gotten it
  20. Sandy is a little disappointed with the last two years because we didnt win the championship but is proud of how far they came
  21. Marcus is still on the team because he plays good defense. There is a commitment to the chemistry of the team, he is good for it I guess.  Marcus can still be productive.
  22. Ahead 100,000 in atttendance this year
  23. Lost money since moving to Petco because of the interest and debt from Qualcomm
  24. Khalil's personality hasn't change and is appealing to fans
  25. They take fans interest into account when making deals
  26. Khalil at shortshop is excellent
  27. If people think they are gonna be in the market for a $130 million dollar player, they are mistaken. No way.
  28. If the Cubs think that signing Soriano and Zambrano for that kinda money will win them their first world series since the American Revolution, maybe thats why they havent won a WS.
  29. The payroll for the Padres wont be up to $130 million anytime soon but it is not out of the question
Thats it. He was getting a lot of crap from caller and being called out a lot.

In the beginning he was kind of arrogant and aggrivated but cooled down in the end.

Glad to see that publicly
he has warmed up to Khalil. I know that a lot of people were saying Sandy was down on him for a while, but these appear to be encouraging coments.

How can he say that???
How is that even possible? And if he's even close to being right the entire Padres marketing staff should have been fired yesterday. There's a whole freaking country 30 minutes from Petco that loves only soccer more than baseball! How are they not bringing in revenue from Mexico?? Am I crazy?

i felt the same way
i lived in tijuana for 11 years and i can tell you that people in tijuana, rosarito, and ensenada love baseball. i can't believe that the padres do no get any revenue from baja california. you're not going crazy drama. i was in shock when i heard that, i thought i was going crazy also.

i think Sandy is mistaken
Mexico does bring revenue.
I go to games with people who live in Mexico.
They buy tickets.
heck, I go to games with a couple of friends who have a block of 8 full season ticket in Toyota Terrace.
A man from TJ owns 13 full seasons tickets in the seat directly behind home plate...at $250 a pop plus the buy in fee.
Adrian Gonzalez dad, David, PURCHASES his his ticket for the games he goes to.

Sandy, that is revenue.

i think sandy should had specified
that mexico brings in no revenue from programming padres games or radio... but i know a lot of people that live in tijuana and buys tickets from the padres store in tijuana and go to a lot of games throughout the season.

If I remember
He was talking about TV. He said that the cable is controlled by the MLB Association so i guess the television does not bring them revenue. They get more popular teams.

Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Thanks so much!
Excellent summary. I agree that spending big money doesn't equate to championships, (see 2001-2006 Yankees) but I also think you need to loosen the purse strings every once in awhile to sign players who are not only important to the team's talent, but the teams chemistry, and most importantly the fans. They are the ones who pay their paychecks no?

  1. Greg Maddux 10,000,000
  2. Brian Giles 9,666,667

  12. Josh Bard 1,050,000

  17. Wilfredo Ledezma 415,000
  18. Clay Hensley 392,000
  19. Terrmel Sledge 390,000
  20. Scott Hairston 389,000
  21. Cla Meredith 387,000
  22. Heath Bell 385,500
  23. Kevin Kouzmanoff 380,800
  24. Kevin Cameron 380,000
Total Team Salary:  58,235,567

70 Million would put us up near the Minesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers. Doesn't make you think mega bucks teams does it? Some of our current players salaries may be increasing next year as many do, I'm not sure which if any. Some of our best players have the lowest salaries. But they will be using any extra money to sign a new center fielder because as much as I want Mike Cameron to come back I don't think that is going to happen. I'm thinking Aaron Rowand is going to be patroling CF for the Padres next season.

Personally,
I love seeing pitchers hit home runs.... when I was little and lived in Atlanta, my favorite player was Maddux (weird we have him now), and that "Chicks Dig the Long Ball" commercial with him and Smoltz was all over. its weird to see pitchers and their (usually) ugly hacks hit a ball out.

How is this possible?  Are the Padres just giving it away to Cox and keeping another set of books?  Ref Turner selling the Hawks rights to TBS for $1 back in the day.  I'd buy SF or LA, but are the rights to W Canada, Montana, Idaho that valuable?

it occurred to me that Nihon may be paying a bucket load.  If so, then it would seem that acquiring Ichiro would pay for itself as the TV bucks follow him.  Assuming there is some tourist windfall as well, shouldn't some of the TOT go in the kitty as well?

couple things
Like you say, the Japane revenue, but also, if you look at the cable deal, it's not like a bunch of people have access to these games. It was just this year that they even allowed MLBAM to have access to the feed when literally every other team in the country had already signed on.

In 2010, the Padres will have full control of their TV (or as much as they can similar to Petco Park), and the baseball revenue will increase, thereby creating an increase in the payroll... At least that's the plan.

MONEY
so the reason they're not spending is because 1) they signed a stupid contract with the Chargers to use Qualcomm years ago and 2) they signed a stupid contract with Cox Cable years ago.  how is this the fans fault?  it sounds like he was trying to say "we can't spend what Seattle spends because they are better supported."  BULLSHIT.

the fact of the matter is that bad decisions by the padres in the past have put them in a shitty position with money.  it's the equivolent of signing Soriano and Zambrano to huge deals and then 3 years later having both players go down with career-ending injuries.

they don't have the money to pay for their past mistakes and risk new ones, i get it.  but what about buying out the Cox cable contract and allowing every non-Cox subscriber in San Diego to view the games.  then possibly even trying to market the team to L.A. and Anaheim to pick up a little larger fanbase.  our team (and fans) are drastically different than the L.A. teams and may attract people who are unhappy with their choices up there.

then take out a loan and pay off the interest on Qualcomm.  or cut a deal with the Chargers that the Padres will buy any remaining seats in the stadium for the next 5 years to ensure all home games are televised at home.

it's the losers way of thinking to sit on your hands and go "well, we screwed up in the past, so we should probably lock ourselves in the closet here and wait until those errors go away before we take any chances again."  the way management handles money on this team really pisses me off sometimes.

by John (obviousman) on Aug 21, 2007 5:07 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

fairweathers
Don't you remember back in the day when they would blackout both Chargers and Padres games? Nobody was showing up to games at all. No season tickets being sold. There was talk of both teams leaving San Diego in the same year. And this includes lack of support in years where we had relatively solid teams.

From what I understand of the Cox Cable deal, it's a lock. There's no buying it out because Cox won't sell. It's a cash cow for them now and it was a big gamble for Cox early on since they basically rescued the Padres and, from what I gather, took a loss early on. Nobody's lending any money to anybody in San Diego because the city itself is so effed up with crooked politicians and voters who can't agree on direction.

I think the best learning experience the Padres had was actually not to pay ridiculous amounts of money for players just because they had a couple good seasons. They've been burned by too many long term contracts and have had too much success turning castoffs into major leaguers.

by Dex on Aug 21, 2007 5:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay
but just say that.  Don't go Seattle has 6x our TV revenue leaving the impression that it's a small market vs big market thing, some fundamental force of nature, when its really a dumb decision vs smart decision thing and they're really just making the best of a situation they hashed up.  Teams have stretches of bad luck and good luck, cf Celtics.  Just stop all the whining and scapegoating.
BD

"Dumb decision vs. Smart decision"
It's really not that simple. A big part of the reason the Mariners have such a better TV package with FSN is the simple fact that people in Seattle watch them win or lose. It doesn't matter what their record is...they get damn good ratings. This from the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

"Despite three last-place finishes, the Mariners continue to be a big draw. The club's cable rating of 6.5 in 2006 ranked fifth among baseball local markets. In 2005, a 6.3 rating was fourth. In 2004, a 7.8 ranked third. For three years before that, the Mariners were No. 1 among all major league local markets."

Another part of them getting a good TV deal at the outset was just based on great timing. In 2000, they signed a 10-year deal with FSN for $288 million. In March of this year, they signed an extension with FSN that will run through 2020 for $300 million. The original deal in 2000 was way overbid because at the time of negotiations, Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) and a partner were considering launching cable regional sports networks. The extension in March was based on ratings.

I don't need to defend Dex here, because he can easily do that himself. But the fact is Larry Lucchino put the best media package together that he could based on dealing from a position of very little strength.

Just a side note - I'm pretty sure the deal with the Padres and Cox runs through the 2011 season.

It must be the Front Office's fault! They are teh suck!

Man I'm so sick of peoplpe constantly lambasting our FO. We do damn well, DAMN WELL, for as little money as we have. Whenever people think poorly about this FO, they should really look at Pittsburgh/Tampa Bay/KC/Baltimore. Then you'd really get a good sense of how crappy things can be.

Dex and Drama, thanks for giving some context to the TV deal. Thanks for doing some research and posting logically before flying off the handle at the management.

Wait wait wait
People who dont have Cox cant see the games?!

I remember when I was little my dad had to pay something seperate to be able to get Channel 4 but I thought that changed. No?

I have Time Warner, why can I see the games?

Also, I wish someone from the Padres front office would read this, there are some excellent ideas. Especially the one about expanding the market to LA and Anaheim where there are definitely Padres fans. Not that they would listen to us but thats besides the point.

by padresgirlforlife44 on Aug 21, 2007 10:52 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yes and no
if you have time warner cable (basic or digital) you can watch it on channel 4. i guess it makes sense seeing as the channel is 'owned' by cox. my friend who doesn't have cable does not get channel four, but gets ch. 2-10 just fine, including tbs and wgn, which i think is really odd.

i have time warner also and personally if i could, i'd choose cox over them any day of the week.

Listening to it now.
I know the Padres probably believe that they're doing the fans a great service by having Sandy go on once a week and answer the tough questions...but I don't really think that's the case. The truth is, he comes across as totally defensive...at times even dishonest...and uses a lot of double talk to explain the Padres philosophy.  He basically comes off as a total prick.

Sandy
If you guys don't get a chance to listen to the whole interview....here is Sandy in a nutshell:

Remember at the beginning of this month when the Barry Bonds Homerun Chase came to Petco? MLB.com reporter Barry Bloom asked John Moores about the crowds and Moores said this:

"I noticed," John Moores, the Padres' majority owner, told MLB.com during the course of his team's 4-3, 10-inning victory. "We need to go out and get a big-name player to give this franchise some financial stability."

When Darren and Billy asked him what that meant, Sandy claimed that Moores was kidding and didn't mean it at all. That he was basically just bullshitting.

Seriously? We're supposed to believe that?

Billy the problem?
I think Billy puts many people on the defensive right away with the way he asks questions.. I think by now, he is just sick of the same questions he gets from the guy.

Not at all.
Actually, it was more the questions asked by Darren. And it wasn't like Darren was going after him or anything. You can really hear how careful Darren has to be with him in the first place.

I completely disagree
I think he handles some of the idiotic venom admirably. Obviously as a mouthpiece, he has to be diplomatic in what he says.

I think that he gets irked that people assume they know more about baseball than he does.

Case in point
Some guy uses the Business 101 argument and says that the Padres aren't putting forth a quality product. That is the dumbest, most idiotic, over simplification I've ever heard. We have the THIRD BEST RECORD IN THE NL!

Also, please check out this table at Ducksnorts. We clearly have been producing a quality product lately: http://ducksnorts.com/blog/2007/08/why-bother.html

I'm not talking about the jerk-offs that call in and attack the guy. I'm talking about the fair and honest questions posed by Darren and Philly Billy.  At one point Darren asks him flat-out if the value of the franchise has increased since the Padres have moved to Petco Park. His response was that he "would guess so"...but that he really didn't know for sure. Sorry, that's horseshit.

And when he got into his big speech about Moores presonally writing a check to the club for $14 million Darren told him he didn't think the casual fan, or him for that matter, really understood what exactly that meant. Sandy's dick response was: "What part of "personally wrote a check" don't you understand?"

by Drama on Aug 21, 2007 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Value of the franchise...
I think this is completely left out of the discussion as you suggest.  Moores bought the Pads for 94 mil and now they are worth 350 mil.  In 3-4 years, when they get the new cable contract, it will probably go up at least 100 mil.  The money he has to "invest" in the organization is only a fraction of the windfall he will receive when he sell out.  It is hard to feel sorry for a who's net worth just south of a billion.

Moores:
Listen, let me be clear. I greatly appreciate everything that the Moores family has done for the San Diego Padres franchise. He rescued us from that asshole Tom Werner...got the new ball park approved which kept the Padres from relocating...and has hired good baseball people that keep our team competitive and fun to watch. I get the financial restrictions of playing in San Diego. I get that it's a business. I get that it's stupid to drop $140 million on a pitcher. But what I don't appreciate is Sandy talking down to those of us that care for and support this franchise. If he wants to come on for an hour every week and answer the FAIR questions HONESTLY and RESPECTFULLY...then great. I'm all for it.

I thought he was pretty respectful
There were times when he was clearly was frustrated, but he kept it respectful. The only time I think he could have been nicer was when he responded, "You don't understand writing a check for $14 million?"

As for the dodging of questions regarding the club's value, there are two things to consider here:

  • Sandy wasn't here when we moved into Petco. He wasn't here before that. Although he's probably seen the numbers, he doesn't have first hand experience relating to the club's financial success before and after the move to Petco.
  • Sandy's job isn't to assess the financial viability of the Padres (at least as I understand his role, I could be completely wrong on this). His job is to produce a product that puts butts in seats. Is it his job to know how much the club is worth? How do you asses that?
I think Sandy does pretty well. I would agree that he could be more open, but he is also dealing with proprietary issues. He can't honestly produce a photocopy of a check in the UT for verification purposes without having to redact some information. And of course, once the information is redacted, then people will get all conspiracy theory about the whole thing.

I understand what you're saying about the first caller that attacked him and demanded to see a copy of the check Moores had written...screw him. Stupid call...stupid comment.

But as far as the value of the franchise is concerned...come on.  You don't have to be John Moores accountant to KNOW the value of the club has increased since leaving Qualcomm for Petco. Like you, I don't know every part of Sandy's job description either, but for him to feign ignorance on a simple question like that is just dishonest.

also...
do they really write checks for Millions of dollars? Unless it's one of those really big novelty checks?

I would think something like this would hav been done via wire transfer.

in my experience
you usually set up an escrow account and transfer the money to that, but that is more for company/contracts and not payroll.

It would probably be best for you not to disclose any information concerning your money laundering schemes...agreed?

Hahahahaha
Can't you just see Moores rolling up in a van out in front of the Padres front offices? Bunch of balloons and a film crew...a shocked Kevin Towers answers the door...Moores hands him a big ass check for $14 million. Sweet.

The only thing I would say
to this end, is that it would SEEM that we are a more valuable club because our revenues are up in Petco. However, overall financial viability is revenue minus expense, so who knows for sure? Does anybody know if they were paying expense on Qualcomm while they were there? Do they pay on Petco?

I'm in full agreement that the franchise appears to be more valuable, but that's because appearances are all about perception, and have little to do with the underlying reality.

I don't have the numbers...
but the one time I heard/read them, I thought the value of the franchise is miniscule when compared to the profits he's reaping on the new, ballpark adjacent condo projects that he owns.

I'd be surprised if anyone said that Moores purchased the padres for anything other than a vehicle to drasticly increase the value of the lots he owned downtown.

Condos/Hotels
Dug up this old post from last year. Basically, Moores had to develop the land the way he did if he wanted to get the ballpark built, which he paid a sizable chunk of. It's easy to look back and say of course a ballpark would increase the value of the land, but if it was so obvious, somebody in the city would've made that clear to taxpayers and the deal would've been cut in a way that the city would benefit beyond the property taxes that have to be paid.

Walking around the ballpark a bit shows how little people seemed to value the land around there as a lot of it is still warehouses and rundown buildings that could easily be profiting much more for the owners had they had more foresight. Much of it's being converted into different things, but it still surprises me a little bit to see some of the buildings, steps away from the ballpark, that don't seem to be getting used for anything.

I agree with your disagreement
Poor guy.  This club has come a long way in the last 3 - 4 years.  People have a short memory - a crappy team saddled with worthless huge contracts.  New we have a beautiful new stadium, a team in the hunt every year, blah blah blah.  They hired Sandy, Grady, Paul - the entire moneyball braintrust, for a reason - to field a competitive team without breaking the bank.  They've done that.  Now you have to give them time to build the farm system and get the right players.  But screw that....We have great pitching that only comes around every so often....So get a couple of great hitters (like Teixeira) in here to take us to the Freakin' Series!
