The sick sad realization

In today's union trib the headline read "Pads losing ground, and Peavy in 2010."

I understand that 2010 means we still have two more years after this with Peavy in our rotation, but I have come to two thoughts since reading the article.  The first being how sad it is that Peavy will  become a free agent and bring in BANK, probably too much for the Padres to fork over. It's a sad feeling knowing that we probably can't keep our ace.

Secondly, why the hell would the Trib even run that story, 2010 is 2 and a half years away and no one wants to think that Peavy won't be a Padre after that. This is one huge problem i have with the Union their sports writers SUCK. With all the struggles the team has been through since the all-star break the last thing we/the team need to see is Jake talk about how he wants to leave when he is a free agent. Bill Center you are dead to me.

First off,
good first diary! Put some ice on it and it won't be as sore in the morning...
Yeah, seriously; what's the point in writing crap like that? The optimist in me says maybe by then things will have changed and we'll have more than just Moores's TALK about wanting a superstar and wanting to die broke. We should find out who his primary care physician is and pay him off to tell Moores that he only has a year to live so he'll sink ungodly sums of money into long, long term contracts for all of our young stars and stars-to-be.

The first thing
my dad said to me this morning "DONT READ THE PAPER!" And the second that I did, I knew why he said that.

I cried when I read this. The Padres know that he is worth whatever money we can give him. Jake said he wants to stay here. The Pads have been good to him. He doesnt need or want the money. KT should know he is worth it.

Anyways, the UT is dumb. They are just trying to stir up more controversy and now is the time because of Zambranos contract.

Jake is not after money, he is after a championship ring.

my dad told me
the same thing this morning. he keeps up bringing that topic up a lot. i would be really sad if he leaves the padres.

But Jake didnt say he wanted to leave
He said that is what probably going to happen, but he hopes not.

Just a money issue, the Padres dont have it.

PEAVY
i think peavy is a great competitor, and really wants to win a ring; even tho KT is like the biggest cheap GM in the world, there are some players that you absolutely HAVE to sign. peavy is the conerestone of the padres franchise right now; if the padres lost peavy that would be HORRIBLE! when they unload on B-giles later that may give them more flexibility anywayz..

i know i may be
killed for even bringing this up but;
if we all understand that the padres will not be able to afford peavy after 2009, why not trade him this off season? Chris Young has put up amazing numbers and could easily take over the ace position. Trading peavy would bring so much back in return after peavys cy caliber year that its worth thinking about.

I love peavy but the type of money he deserves will never be available in SD. Outside of money, peavy will never get the run support here that he deserves . In all honesty what is the use of having Peavy throw a scoreless six innings if our offense cant put up a single run?

We all fall in love with players, especially guys like Peavy who are a rarity in todays baseball. But NOBODY is bigger than the team. We need to do whats best for the padres and sell the stock high.

AHHH
Well then wouldnt we have to trade Chris Young too because he is also very good?

No trading Jake.

I don't really disagree
Though I think you keep him one more yr and then explore the option of trading him before the '09 season.

I've always had this weird feeling, though, that Jake may be the one guy Moores finally opens up the vault for IF Alderson gave the okay on a long term deal, which is a really big if.

i agree
that if we did decide to trade peav, which i am not totally opposed to depending on what we could get and if we are better with him or with a package of young phenoms. but i would hold off until after next season to explore those options.

Too far away
What a lame article. I would expect it from the paper, but why would Peavy consent to such crap. Who knows what will happen two years from now. Peavy may go the path of Prior and Wood, or maybe if the Padres win a championship between now and then Peavy will cool down about the whole thing and go the path of Tony Gwynn. If he does pull a Kevin Brown and leave for the big money, then we join ranks of many other mid-market teams that lose their stars. I think too many people believe that this past offseason will continue to repeat itself. A lot of teams will soon be realizing that throwing money is becoming less viable. There will always be teams like the Yankees that can overpay for players even if it doesn't make them better, if it will keep another team from improving. If it is a choice between paying Peavy $20mil a year (or whatever good pitchers are making at that point) or getting two or three other good players, then I say good luck Jake.

My take on the situation
Also posted at Ducksnorts.

Here's what I would do if I was the Padres.

After this season, you approach Jake and his agent and you tell him "Look, we want you to be a Padre for a long time, but if you want Zambrano money, it's not gonna happen. That said, lets see if we can work out a mutually beneficial deal by February 1st. If we can't work out something by then, we'll table discussions and see where the world takes us."

I think the Padres could reasonably offer 5 year/75 million at this point. You buy out 2008 and 2009 and add Peavy through 2012. Maybe even a club option for 2013.

I also think that the Padres need to make this as pbulic as possible, so they don't get burned. They can say that they tried to make a fair offer to Jake, and if he turns it down, he turns it down. If he really means what he says about wanting to stay a Padre, then they can work something out with him.

The reason I say the February deadline is because of something I heard on the post game show today. Kenterra brought up the great point that dealing Jake after this season would net you a huge return (you'd be trading him after one of his best years and he would be under control for 2 years). If you wait until the end of 2008 to trade him, you risk him having an unmemorable 2008 and 1 less year of control.

I love Jake and I want him to stay, but it's the San Diego Padres, not the San Diego Jake Peavys. Ultimately, this team has to do what's best for them in the long run. Although I would miss having Jake around next year, if we dealt him to the Yanks for something like Cano/Matsui/and other awesome prospects (hell, maybe even Hughes), I think you've got to listen. It's pessimistic to think about dealing him now, but if Jake makes it clear that he wants Zambrano money, then you might as well get something for him while you can.

Agreed
I think everything you say here makes a great deal of sense.  As I said above, I'd hate to give him up before the start of the '09 season, but I think you (and SoulSD above) make a great pt about his value being at its highest pt after this season and if they can't reach a deal, this off-season would be the one to maximize his trade value.

by Winfield's Ghost on Aug 19, 2007 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly how i feel
his value may never be higher than it is this year. If he makes it clear that he wants that big money, which i think he did in this article, then sell. I bet teams would give up a lot for jake, they get to have him those 2 years at contract price instead of having to pay some long term Zito or Zambrano money.

by soulSD on Aug 19, 2007 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The current price
is something else that I didn't originally consider, but you're right. His relatively light price would definitely be further enticement for another team to ante up in a HUGE way. If KT made it known that he was listening to offers for Jake, he could create a massive bidding war between about 20 teams.

Of course, I hope that Jake would take something in the vicinity of 5 year/65 million. That's 13 mil a year and I would also suggest a 15 mil club option for 2013.

I think it's pretty weak that people are like "Moores and Sandy are teh suck! They hate Jake!" At the end of the day, baseball is a team sport. Jake knows what the financial climate of the Padres is, and if he really means it about wanting to stay in San Diego, he should be able to show it.

Now that I've finally
actually read the article itsself, I've got to say that if I have to be pissed off at anyone over this, it's Jake Peavy himself. If he hadn't been running his mouth about this crap right now, Bill Center wouldn't have had an article. If that's the way he feels, fine. If he wants to say these things publicly to make the front office feel some heat, fine. But there's a time and a place for that and the middle of a tough pennant race isn't it. If he loves San Diego and the Padres so goddamn much, maybe he ought to think twice before creating such an unneccesary negative distraction at a time like this.

all i could think
while reading it is this stuck with me the most...

But the first question I'd ask is, 'Can you give me your word that we're going to make an effort to win the World Series?'

i think this team doesn't feel like they are being given what they need to win.  i felt like it was another way at jabbing at the front office for not making a serious run at things.

by socalgirl30 on Aug 19, 2007 9:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What does it mean to win the World Series?
You cannot, I repeat, CANNOT guarantee anything in the playoffs. The playoffs are a crapshoot. If you're good enough to make it to the playoffs, you're good enough to win it all (see Cardinals, 2006). Going out and blowing a ton of cash or selling off the farm guarantee nothing. Even if you spend a bunch of cash on a player, there's no guarantee he'll be healthy or productive.

The more I talk about this article, the more I wish Jake had said something to the effect of, "We're trying to win a title. I can't worry about this right now." But he answered questions. He didn't blast the team, but he didn't  hold back as much as I would have hoped.

No matter how much money this team spends, some people will never be satisfied that we're "going for it." This team has a ton of potential. If they can play to it, they'll do fine.

by Phantom on Aug 19, 2007 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree
it made me wonder why he talked about it when we are working towards something.  it just seems there has been so much grumbling from the players about the front office not going out and getting a big bat.  about trading away linebrink (who blew a game for the brewers).  i just feel like it's been an ongoing theme since the all star break and i can't understand why this kind of article came out now.  the stuff said is not the kind of thing that rallies the troops and gets fans excited.

Today's UT
It seems like the other players on the team and Bud Black agree with us.

Pitcher Jake Peavy and manager Bud Black met to discuss Peavy's comments in yesterday's Union-Tribune that he didn't expect to remain with the Padres beyond the end of his present contract in 2009.
"I was just being honest," Peavy reiterated yesterday. "I'd love to remain a Padre. I'd love to move my family full time to San Diego and spend my entire career with the only team I've ever played for.

"I just don't think that's going to happen. Believe me, I hope I'm wrong."

Several of his teammates also spoke with Peavy yesterday. The general theme: The timing of his comments could have been better.
