Chris Young has to be forced onto the All Star Team

I love voting for the All Star team.  I like being at a game and punching those little chads out with tools that are horrible for punching.  I try to use a car key, but it's too big, I try my finger nail but it's too short.  I try biting them, it's a mess and eventually you give up, but it's kinda fun to do with your friends at a game.  It's kinda like old ladies who chat while knitting.  You can race your friends, try and find the fastest pattern.  You watch the game, you punch, you chit chat.  It makes for a nice evening, there is always something going on.

I'll tell you what is not fun for me.  Voting on the internet.  You can't suck the fun out of something quicker than to make me do something so f'n repetitive on the internet, like writing a blog like voting.  I can't stand entering that little security code and I hate how the MLB wants us to vote a billion times.

I don't think their goal was ever to get the best players, they just want to see how many people they can get to visit their site.  Look how proud they are.

Baseball fans around the world cast a record 23 million valid votes on MLB.com since the program commenced on Sunday, July 1 at approximately 7:00 p.m. (EDT). This year's record number of votes, including nearly one million cast via mobile phones, represents an increase of more than 20 percent from the previous mark of 18.6 million set in 2006.

Can we just vote once?  How about we vote once and then the manager chooses the guys that deserve to be on the team.  Then if he's a dumb ass and puts together a dumb team we can humiliate him.  All this voting has taken Democracy way too far. Somebody just make a decision!

Better yet, how about all the managers come up with a roster that includes at least one player from every team and then we just vote which manager/roster we want.  Wouldn't that save a lot of time?

On the National League ballot, San Diego's Chris Young led all vote-getters with more than 4.5 million votes

Do the fans have to do everything?  Do we have to tell them 4.5 million times that Chris Young should be an All Star?  Are they that dense?

You know how many of those votes were mine?  Zero.  Does that make me a bad baseball fan?  A bad Padres fan?  Yes and yes.  Do I care?  Am I sorry?  No and no.  I admire all of you who did vote and made Chris Young and All Star, but it's just not my thing.  I don't think my vote counts, even if it did I'd have to vote a billion times and I just don't have the patience for that and I don't really care if Chris Young throws half an inning at the tail end of the All Star game.

I don't want to be part of the MLB's marketing monster.  You know those internet banner ads that have a really simple question?  Like what's the capital of the United States?  Then they will have D.C. and then some answers that are obviously wrong.  I think there must be something in human nature that makes you want to click the right answer.  I think that's what they did with Chris Young.  It's all a big conspiracy!  We see a guy that obviously belongs on the team and we can't help but want to vote for him.  They stumbled upon a way to increase "the buzz" and the number of web site visits.  Next year is going to be insane, they are going to make it even more extreme.

You're better than me. I couldn't keep voting. I gave up before it started.  The thought of voting again was too much for me. I just don't care.

I guess I finally see the player's point of view.  No wonder they screw around during the All Star break and play soft.  They don't care.  It doesn't matter to them and it doesn't matter to me.  Sure I'll probably turn it on for a bit, but I'll get sick of the announcers, the commercials and the air time the big city teams will get. It's not about the game and it's not about the players.

Congratulations Chris Young, you deserved this honor all along. It's just a shame that you had to be the poster boy for this marketing blitz.

is it rare that i agree with jbox?
yes, and yes. I didn't vote either, cause i just didn't care. Glad CY made the team, he deserved it.

Probably will watch a few minutes of the ASG, but its not interesting at all.

Let's sweep Atlanta this weekend.

You just gave me a great idea to give to the MLB
Those ballots are time consuming to fill out. They should blitz all-star voters with a vote for each position. Call it Election Week.

Second Base Saturday
Shortstop Sunday
Masked Man Monday (catchers)
Third Base Thursday
First Base Friday
Do the outfielders over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.

I bet you could get a sponsor for each day of the week. Have people sign up with their emails for each one. It would be terrific.

I probably should've pitched this rather than just give it away here on the blog...

Fantabolous
that is the best idea you ever had.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

Also
I totally agree with jbox. Somewhere along the line, people confused their love of predicting with their love of voicing their opinion. Ballots were never meant to be parlay cards, but I think that's how people treat them.

"Why are you voting for that guy?"

"I like that guy."

"But it's obvious this other guy's gonna win. You should vote for this other guy."

"Ummmmmm..."

Great post
I voted a ton, but I didn't feel good about it.

I didn't vote either...
For all those reasons.  WOOOO! I'm not alone.

Hilarious
"like writing a blog"

or

"all this voting is killing Democracy"

One fun thing that my family has always done is ask  the usher for the all star ballot REAL early in the season.  Opening day preferably.

I don't even have the power of my convictions
I wasn't going to vote.  Then I got scared that if I didn't vote, CY wouldn't make it and it would be all my fault (even though I really don't care about the ASG, never voted for the original team).  And Jake and Trevor told me to, and how could I not do what they said?  But then I only voted a few times . . . so I wasn't strong and didn't vote, and I wasn't dedicated and voted a lot.  I feel a little dirty and used.

Way too easy.
I'm just gonna let that one go.

I hear ya
Yeah, I played the game this year, but it was no real effort from my perspective. I mean, Alex isn't here and I was farting around on the internet to keep busy anyway - might as well feel like I was supporting CY. I admit it felt damn good to see he made it yesterday!

The thing is - OK, you stood by your principles and disgust of an obvious marketing ploy in this instance - but what about others you encounter every day?

other thoughts.....
the Pads already had 2 pitchers and there was probably resistance against having a 3rd by most players.  Also, is it really that great having your pitchers pitching in the All Star game, when they could be home resting up for the 2nd half of the season?  I don't know how this affects their rotation - if it helps or hurts.

I left work early
yesterday.  After I got up from my nap I turned on the tele and saw CY giving another humble "thank you" speech.  He was particularly moved by the amount of fans that voted...  and I thought, I know those guys!  All of them!  And by name!  Cool...

Personally, I got caught in Demoira's trap and will probably do the same in regards to the game.
I'll vow like I do every year that I WON'T watch it, coz it's not real baseball, it's stupid, exhibition, money-laundering baseball.
But after about 30 to 40 minutes I'll give up coz there is nothing else on and there hasn't been a game on for EVER and I'm just jonesing to hear the crack of the bat.
So I'll turn it on and bitch the whole way through it and for hours afterwards about how completely and utterly unsatisfying the whole thing was.
Then I'll wait impatiently for the ridiculous Home Run Derby...
Sigh.  Where can I get one of those thermometers?

Last year
My friend from work and I used it as an excuse to go to Oggis for happy hour food and drinks and to watch the game. Then we yapped our way through and only paid attention when Trevor game in - then we drank some more!!

Home Run derby is Monday which is kinda fun and the game on Tuesday will be after I have some much needed dental work so I will be very content to lay on the sofa with the cats and enjoy the game.
