Who are you not allowed to hate in baseball?

Being a baseball fan, I always figured I would be allowed to not only root for my team, but also root against anybody I want. To say that there's somebody in baseball that I'm not allowed to dislike seems a little bit fascist to me, but what do I know? Derek Jeter seems to be the name that people bring up as being immune to hatred, but heck... jbox and I hate him. Does that make us bad baseball fans?

Today's question and answer day apparently... Who would you say is un-hate-able? I'm interested to hear.

Maddux
My first guy would've been Jeter because I think he's exactly what a baseball player should be, but I guess anyone in a Yankee uni is fair game.  I'm always surprised when people call him arrogant.  I've never seen it and the guy shows up every day with nothing on his mind other than winning.

So next I'd say Maddux.  Total professional, no attitude, tutors the young guys, picks up the tabs and wins games, so he's a great teammate.  Never throws at a guy for his own mistakes or shows up hitters, so I think other teams respect him.  Just does his job and is a good guy.  And I would've said that before he signed with the Pads.

Of course, he's never peed on my leg, so...

When he was with the Braves
I didn't like him much.  I didn't like how he and other Braves pitchers got the outside corners from umps.  Remember when they used to float something up there a foot off the plate?

by jbox on Jul 3, 2007 11:44 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well yeah
But I didn't exactly get the impression he was paying the umps for that call.  And it's not like he bitches on the rare occasions he doesn't get it.

I think you've officially jinxed his start this evening.  You and Jonny Dub are like two peas in a pod.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 3, 2007 12:20 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No-No
Remember when he had a no-hitter going into the ninth against the Pads.  Gwynn was at bat and hit a ball down the left field line towards the fence.  The left fielder had a glove on the ball and hit the fence at the same time.  The ball fell to the ground and Tony got a hit.  The ball should have been caught, but nonetheless Tony was awarded a hit.  Maddux was pissed!  Saying the Tony was given a hit because he was Tony.  He was a real baby about it all.  But I still like him.

Doug Flutie, Jr.
And to a lesser extent, his Dad.

Are we limiting our responses to baseball players?  How about Jim Abbott?  How about any player with a physical disability? Sorry, David, diabetes doesn't count.

Derek Jeter
looks like a cross between The Rock and a muppet. I don't really have a problem with him.

Maddux is a good one, and I think Trevor would have to be on there. While the closers value is always up for debate, I can't see any reason to dislike him as an individual.

I will say this for Schilling: When I was still doing Scott and BR's show...Schilling was in AZ at the time and we got him as a guest. He came on and we just blew out the clock. We had him on for a little over 15 minutes (which is insane). Out of all the great interviews we had...he was one that really stood out. His answers were thoughtful, smart, funny...he says what he believes and he should really be commended for that. Sometimes, he slips up and says something stupid...I'd rather he do that than give us the list of Bull Durham answers.

I'm gonna have to staunchly disagree
with this one. And I have a good story to back it up. Join me, if you will.

Back in the day, when the Padres used to play in Yuma for ST, my family and I would go every year. Several of my earliest baseball memories are frying under that heat and watching the Padres practice and play games in Yuma.

One particular day, my family and I were watching the Mariners practice. Junior, who was just starting to show flashes of his brilliance, was one of the Mariner's practicing on the field. I think I was between 6 and 8 (I'm 22 now by the way) and I was just enjoying being at the park with my parents. My dad pointed out Griffey to me and told me that his dad had played and that lots of people expected Jr. was gonna be a star. With that, my dad indicated that I should try to get his autograph.

As you all know, once the practices are over, the players typically hang out for a little bit and sign autographs. On this particular morning, there were very few spectators out for the practice, and I had practically nobody to contend with as Jr. exited the practice field. I walked towards Jr., and he bent over to tie his shoes. As he was bent over, I asked (and I will never forget this):

"Mr. Griffey Jr, can I please have your autograph."

Jr. finished tying his shoes, stood up, looked me square in the eyes, and walked away.

Since that day, Jr. has been dead to me and always will be. My entire family HATES him for this (as they all saw it happen). Incidentally, we attempted later on during our soujourn to get his autograph again, and Griffey was one of the only Mariners to scoff at the fans. There's no way Griffey is a guy that you can't hate. I'm not sure how he's matured, but when he was just getting started, the guy was one of the most arrogant and unaccessible players I've ever come across.

al pujols is easy to hate after the playoffs..
last year. Did you forget some of those comments he made about our beloved Padres not being so difficult to hit against? He is a jackass of the first degree that needs to just keep his mouth shut and let the media build his personality.

As far as Jeter, he plays like he is somebody that would "play for meal money." He truly looks like he is having a blast and would keep playing till his dad would start yelling to come inside.

Jeter
Fire Joe Morgan writes...

In 2006, in regards to A-Rod, Jeter said: "I said the only thing I wasn't going to do was tell the fans who they should boo and who they shouldn't boo."

In 2005, in regards to Giambi, Jeter said: Jeter implored Yankees fans to stop booing Giambi. "The fans have to start cheering for him," Jeter said. "If you're a Yankee fan, you want us to win and we need Jason ."

Yep yep! Swell guy he is!

Maddux in his start against the Red Sox during interleague this year wasn't getting that outside corner called. He gave some lip to the umpire after a close pitch, got the next call, pumped his fists, pointed at the umpire and mouthed something to the tune of, "Damn straight" or somesuch. Again, not someone that I think can't be hated. How about Michael Barret? Nobody has problems with him, right?

by Sal Paradise on Jul 4, 2007 9:33 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Two candidates
I can only speak to the teams I know best, the Orioles and Red Sox. Here in Baltimore, people sometimes find fault with Cal Ripken, but I've never heard anyone utter anything against Brian Roberts. A gamer and all-around good guy by all accounts.

Now I'll give you three reasons why you can't hate Tim Wakefield:

  1. His contract, which basically says he'll play for the Sox for the rest of his career. The ultimate hometown discount.
  2. Tireless worker in the community and for charity.
  3. He's pitches the knuckle. It's a dying art, but one well worth keeping around.

by Ben on Jul 5, 2007 6:47 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can't help
but associate Wakefield with Mirabelli.  Though I suppose that alone is a reason to love him - he was the reason the Sox took Mirabelli off our hands and gave us Bardo and Cla.

Hmmm. . . .  Guess I can't have him.

by Demoira on Jul 5, 2007 6:50 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Red Sox Fans
I know Sox fans who hate on Tim Wakefield just for the fact that Mirabelli is associated with him. Too much effort for the return.

by Dex on Jul 5, 2007 8:08 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's because they're dumb
Wakefield is a better-than-league-average-pitcher with a $3 million/year for life contract for the Sox. Worth every penny and more. People who would hate Wakefield because of Mirabelli because of Bard are just being dumb. Honest. Forrest Gump dumb. I'll second Mr. Roberts.

by Sal Paradise on Jul 5, 2007 6:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mirabelli thus Wake Haters
Yeah, that logic is just ridiculous. It's not like Wakefield is insisting on having Mirabelli as his personal catcher - he just needs someone to catch the pitch. It's not his fault that the front office can't do any better than Mirabelli. Sox fans have a rep for being among the most knowledgeable in the game, but they get panicky and irrational about just about everything.

Great topic, by the way.
