Nuts
Didn't they change the rule this year anyway? Don't you have to stay on the field? Or does that just apply to the dugout.

Stupid as hell
There's making an effort, and then there's being stupid.  It's the same thing as Peavy not telling people about his ribs before the playoffs.  You want a gamer, but you want them to be out there night after night, not for one spectacular play and then in the hospital.  No one expects you to get the ball by leaping into the stands.  Plus, he could have hurt a little kid in the stands, not just himself.  It's different when the ball is almost reachable - that wasn't.

I totally agree with the Peavy analogy.
But it still looks really cool.

Better
than that weak Jeter play.

by jbox on Jul 3, 2007 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

totally.
I'm still angry about all the press that Jeter play got... total BS.

Come on...
you can hate the Yankees, but Derek Jeter is the consumate baseball player. He plays the game right and plays hard each and every day. Even if you hate the Yankees, you have have love Derek Jeter if you are a baseball fan.

I don't really like Derek Jeter
He's always seemed to have a smug air about him.

When I went to Yankee Stadium there was a Yankee Fan sitting in front of me saying the same thing you're saying. Basically, "Even Red Sox fans love Jeter. You can't help but love a guy like that." I didn't say anything, but was thinking, Oh yeah? Watch this.

Agree 100%
Pure class. Total baseball player. Ultimate team guy. I love Jeter. He defines what it used to mean to be a Yankee.

Yeah
but he is still a terrible fielding shortstop. Don't get me wrong, he is a great baseball player, but there are other people that don't get as much deserved attention because they don't play in New York.

by osbug on Jul 3, 2007 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree
that he is a terrible fielder. I think he is an amazing fielder. But since the thread below this one deemed fielding percentage irrelevant, I guess we are both right?

derek
He makes that ranging right/spin-throw well, but can't get anything hit to his left to save his life.

Here is one
of many articles detailing why Derek Jeter is not a good fielding shortstop:

Here*

*Apparently I can't link directly to the article, but if you go to the site, go to articles and look at Jeter vs. Everett, you will see the article I am talking about.

Hit submit to soon
Not that that particular play wasn't good, but a better shortstop wouldn't have had to go flying in to the stands to get it. He makes a lot of plays look hard that shouldn't be, and the media eats it up. I personally don't have a problem with him, but I dislike the way the media overplays him. He is a great hitter, and by all accounts a great teammate, but so are many other players.

As Astros fans
at least they didn't let him catch the ball.  But they should have poured beer all over him and rubbed nacho cheese in his hair.

Love the effort
I like this guy.

He leaps like my cat.
I wonder what was going through his brain during the whole run-leap-meet the concrete sequence.

the situation matters!
look at the situation!  phillies down by 1, bases loaded, 2 outs in the 7th inning.  and living in philly myself, i can tell you that their bullpen is a freaking gascan.  i know they still lost, but he tried to give them a much, much better shot at winning with this effort.  had he made the catch, there's a good chance the phillies would've won.

PLUS, this will endear him to the philly fans to no end.  aaron rowand has a special place in all phillies fans' hearts because of his broken nose last year.  now, because of this single play, victorino will enjoy a long career in philadelphia (they're locking him up long-term) without the fans getting bored and turning on him (ala Abreu).

i think
If you're worried about flying cat-people, foul balls, Gaslamp ballers diving onto the field, or line drives hit at your face, you should purchase your tickets accordingly.

I've always love full contact baseball
and I think you should be able to throw the ball at a runner to get him out.  Full contact with the crowd takes it up another notch. Can fans jump out of the stands to knock the ball out of his glove as he goes for a catch?  Bring it on!

by planetjeffy on Jul 3, 2007 11:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Fantastic effort
We're totally quick to RIP players who half-ass it on the field - it's the absolute worse thing a player can do.  If Victorino had just taken a step or two toward the ball, then stopped, half the people in the park would've screamed at him for being lazy.

You can't have it both ways.  This was a legitimate effort by an all out hustle guy - Victorino plays this way all the time.  You can't ask a guy to stop in mid-sprint to consider the ramifications of what he's doing.  If he thinks he can get the ball, he should try to go get the ball, regardless of where it takes him.

More guys should play like that.

I don't rip on guys
who case the ball all the way to the stands and then stop at the stands when they realize the ball is unreachable.  I take issue with guys who don't hustle to the stands (or at least hustle until it is clear the ball's landing in the stands).

It just doesn't make sense to injure yourself and potentially others for a play that you probably can't make.

by Demoira on Jul 3, 2007 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right
But how does he know he can't make the play?  Where do you draw the line?  Two rows in? Four rows?  "Probably can't make" is different for every player.  I don't think it's fair to ask guys to use judgement in how they go after a ball.  I just want them to react.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jul 3, 2007 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

After further review
I am still not sure the catch would have even counted. I couldn't quite tell from that video if he would have been in-bounds if he had actually caught it. From the look of things, there is no way he could have legally made the catch.

I still think he was endangering too many people by doing that, including himself.

6.05
A batter is out when --
(a) His fair or foul fly ball (other than a foul tip) is legally caught by a fielder;
Rule 6.05(a) Comment: A fielder may reach into, but not step into, a dugout to make a catch, and if he holds the ball, the catch shall be allowed. A fielder, in order to make a catch on a foul ball nearing a dugout or other out-of-play area (such as the stands), must have one or both feet on or over the playing surface (including the lip of the dugout) and neither foot on the ground inside the dugout or in any other out-of-play area. Ball is in play, unless the fielder, after making a legal catch, falls into a dugout or other out-of-play area, in which case the ball is dead. Status of runners shall be as described in Rule 7.04(c) Comment.
