Anyone willing to punch Carlos Zambrano and/or A.J. Pierzynski is OK by me

I don't particularly like Carlos Zambrano. Seeing him come out of the clubhouse with his pants half on just to try to attack Chris Young didn't sit very well with me. I don't mind A.J. Pierzynski's act, but the dude could use a punch to the nose every now and then.

What is it about the enemy of your enemy is your friend? Well, now it's (semi-)official. Apparently, the Padres have acquired Michael Barrett. They don't say who we moved for him, but I like to imagine that Barrett played against the Padres and then requested amnesty from the heck on earth that is the Chicago Cubs.

The only unfortunate is that Barrett will no longer be able to fight the evils of Chicago baseball from within. He'll have to throw stuffed animals from the outside like the rest of us.

Update [2007-6-20 10:53:6 by Dex]: Word on the street is that we moved Bowen and Kyler Burke. Who else on the Cubs can we provide amnesty to?

Update [2007-6-20 11:3:29 by Dex]: Discussion on Bleed Cubbie Blue. No consensus yet, though it looks like people are leaning towards realizing that the Cubs were attempting an addition by subtraction, but may not have received enough in return. I always thought Bowen was a decent catcher.

the question is, of course,
who gets sent down? Bowen, yeah? And who gets to start?

Over at BleedCubbieBlue
and family friend of Bowen's states he is the guy traded.  Even up...seems that Chicago would probably want another prospect in return. Straight up seems to favor us but KT probably told them that Bowen is a 40HR catcher in brick walled stadiums.

As I begin to digest more
I'm thinking this is a great move...it definitely puts more pressure on Bard to perform.

9HR's and he is already second on our team in HR's (granted he has not played at PETCO).

I'm sure that fight mentality will be silenced in the presence of Wells, Maddux, Young, Peavy.

A proper introduction by the Giles boys and maybe a reference to our winning record will make a saint out of anybody.

Does Barrett moves into a half time platoon with Bard or play less and pinch hit?  I think they'll play him.

Barrett
has more HR's than Bard and Bowen combined, if this is the 'big bat' we were after, I doubt they'll sit him.

Something doesn't sit right with me
In addition to the Zambrano scuffle (understandable because I hate the guy), there was the cheap-shot on Pierzynski (questionable even though I hate the guy) and the heated discussion with new-jack Rich Hill (questionable although I don't know the guy or the circumstances). Clashing with teammates seems to be Barret's thing.

Even though everyone has to deal with a-holes at work, most of us don't throw down with them.

Barrett
Let's break these apart and take them piece by piece. First one: Zambrano. Zambrano is a raging asshole and I can't fault anyone for wanting to take his head off...even his catcher. The Pierzynski fight was a matter of Barrett protecting his ground. AJ, in a close battle for biggest jerk in baseball with Jeff Kent each year, barreled him over in a close play at the plate and then got up and took a step toward Barrett. Can't fault him for punching AJ. And the Rich Hill was actually not an argument. They were discussing pitch selection and Hill was actually angry with himself for a pitch he had thrown in the previous half of the inning. It was only blown up because of the Zambrano fight.

by Drama on Jun 20, 2007 7:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute
Pierzynski, if I remember correctly, was heading back to the dugout.  Why would he try to start a fight with a guy he had just run over?

Again, we all know Pierzynski is a major league asshole -- as well as Zambrano -- but I would much rather see a level-headed player make an attempt to diffuse the situation during a confrontation with either of them rather than make it worse.

The Padres, as far as I know (based on UT pre-season fluff stories), are sitting on great team chemistry. Why mess with that?

Chemistry
Paul Depodesta said, "...team chemistry is a three game winning streak away. Typically winning cures all. Losing, especially in highly competitive atmospheres, errodes chemistry."

Remember, we had "good chemistry" recently when Robert Fick was with the club. Had good chemistry with Kevin Brown and Jim Layritz playing on the same team. I don't think that putting a guy who's competitive an passionate on a winning ballclub will hurt anything. I think you'd have to add a guy who's threatened death on mothers and sent photos of handguns to people before you really start to hurt chemistry.

AJ vs. Barrett
Bitter, bitter rivalry. Let's say Jeff Kent had just bowled over Bard at the plate and then jumped up and took a step towards Bard. Things may get heated....no?

AJ's excuse was that he was going around Barrett to get his helmet. That's bullshit. First off, AJ is a known asshole. (That's why the Giants ran him out of town. In a clubhouse with Bonds and Kent...AJ was considered the biggest dick. That's amazing.) And secondly, we're supposed to believe that after scoring a big run, in a big series against their hated cross-town rival...he's going after his helmet? Aren't there bat boys in Chicago? He was taking a step towards Barrett like a DB would after laying out a wide reciever. He was being AJ...a dick. And Barrett wasn't going to let him get away with it.

If I remember right
Pierzynski missed the plate when he slid, and Barret missed the ball, Pierzynski got up and stomped on the plate in a kind of "I am a The Champion" moment.

They should
Start him, it's an offensive upgrade and he's shown he can call a good game behind the plate when the pitcher throwing it to him isn't terrible. I hope there isn't a mindset that since we've dropped a backup, the guy acquired will take the same role - he's much better than that.

by California Penal on Jun 20, 2007 7:36 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe
they brought Barret in as extra "protection" for the Pads pitcher.  Buddy wants us to pitch inside more, and sometimes a pitch accidently finds people faces, just saying it would be nice to have a catcher that can diffuse the situation.

On another note, does anybody have video of the Khalil inteview after the game yesterday?  It was hilarious, I started to feel bad for the reporter trying to ask questions and getting stonewalled.

"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

I was there
he popped off to DR for stealing a base in the 6th or 7th inning of a game where the Pads were leading by four runs, and closing in on a four-game home sweep.  He popped off after DR scored, but before they could get near each other, big brother Brian stepped in between them from the on deck circle.  I wouldn't f*** with Brian Giles...
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Barrett
Upgraded Right Handed Bat that we need. Hits for decent average and decent power. Got him for almost nothing. Another great move by KT, he may have a few anger management problems, but I agree with Drama, Zambrano and Piezinski are known assholes and I don't blame him for getting into a scuffle with them. I think he'll be fine, especially in our clubhouse. Way to go KT.

ugh
Barrett seems the opposite of the clubhouse atmosphere we're building here (fun, loose).  his OBP is low, he doesn't have a ton of power (most HR in a season for him is 16, with half of his games played at Wrigley) and none of Chicago's young pitchers have developed much with him catching (with the possible exception of Rich Hill).

i'm not saying it's a terrible move.  it's a KT move.  get a guy who's a quality starter somewhere else for cheap because of the circumstances.  i just don't know if he really fits in with this team, and i think i'd prefer Bard starting.

Barrett
Everyone is going to have concerns about Barrett's attitude...but please take this into consideration. Barrett caught Greg Maddux for three seasons. Does anyone here actually believe that KT wouldn't have went to Maddux and asked him his opinion? Does anyone believe for one second that KT wouldn't have said "You played with him for three seasons, is he a bad guy or is this all a bunch of hype?" You know he did...and obviously Mad Dog didn't have a problem with it. We've all seen the way the Chicago media twisted the CY-Lee fight. Are we going to take their word...or go with KT and Maddux on this one?? Seriously, guys. This isn't Elijah Dukes.

Michael Barrett is now a San Diego Padre. Let's welcome him with open arms and give him the benefit of the doubt. This is an upgrade.

That's interesting
And there might be something to be read in between the lines there. I guess I heard rumors that the Cubs worried about Barrett long before any recent events. There were rumors that they never liked him to catch Zambrano. And, again, I hardly remember Greg Maddux ever using Barrett.

Of course, neither Maddux nor Zambrano will explicitly say why Blanco was preferable (teammates never throw other teammates under the bus).  Essentially, there was a lot of talk regarding Barrett's mental mistakes.

by TheGrandHatching on Jun 20, 2007 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm a nerd.
So I looked at some numbers.

2004-2006, maddux started 89 games for the cubs, and barrett caught 41 of them, or 46%

  1. 33 starts, barrett appears in 2 - 6%
  2. 34 starts, barrett appears in 24 - 71%
  3. 22 starts, barrett appears in 15 - 68%
Barrett's starting % as a whole those years:
2004 : 122 of 162 - 75%
2005 : 116 of 162 - 72%
2006 : 75 of 96 - 78%

Conclusions: While Blanco was clearly Maddux's personal catcher in 2004, Maddux lost that privilege in 2005 & 2006... either that or Maddux & Barrett managed to get on the same page.

well...
ESPN.com carries all the historical game data back to 2004 and earlier.

So I took dumped all the game appearances for maddux and barrett into Excel, sorted by date.

I deleted any games barrett played where he had 1 or 0 at bats, assuming he'd come into that game as a PH or defensive sub.

Then it was just a matter of having excel tell me where maddux and barrett appeared on the same date, and summing everything up.

And to answer your next question, yes, I spend most of my work day with excel...

However, as another strike against him (and yes, I remember him getting into Dave Robert's face about something last year too), Phil Freaking Nevin vouched for him! Not the best character reference on the planet in my book. Yeah, I get the Maddux connection, but I fall somewhere in the middle with some serious doubts about this guy's personality. He's going to have to prove himself to me, no open arms here.

Exactly...
Barrett's been involved in a bad run of incidents that paint him as this troublemaking hothead, and he's not really like that at all.

It's funny listening to KT on XX Radio right now, they're avoiding the names "Barrett" and "Bowen" because the trade hasn't been finalized, and they're dancing around any guarantees but using little analogies and hints to imply that the deal's done. KT has said that he did ask Maddox about Barrett's character, and that there weren't any concerns there.

Again guys, I think we're really going to be happy with this one...if you remove the character concerns some people have, and just look at numbers, our new catcher is an improvement in pretty much every category over our old one...and we're saying this after still holding on to our starting catcher, and losing an underproducing and inconsistent backup, an A-baller, and cash.

Sure, the A-baller will eventually be an all-star (isn't that how it always works?), but the 5 years until that happens should be very rewarding.

MLB Trade Rumors
"I'm not too worried about chemistry issues despite Barrett's recent incidents.  Barrett is reunited with Greg Maddux, who he caught from 2004-06." I really think that Barrett's intensity should be taken as a positive trait, its an intensity to win. Come on guys, maybe just being on the Cubs and losing for so long just made him snap.

Chemistry issues??
I think we have established long ago that very few players could come to this ballclub and force their will upon and change this ballclub's chemistry. And Michael Barrett certainly isn't one of them. I would imagine that being a dick in that clubhouse gets resolved quickly and decisively. And God only knows what depths the Giles brothers could stoop.

Padres catching
Remember last year when we had Piazza every article was talking about his great presence behind the plate, game calling, etc, despite the high stolen base numbers against him?

This year's Padre catchers have a pitching staff with better numbers, and equally bad performance against base stealers, and nobody says jack about their pitch calling.  Maybe Barrett can throw a few more people out.  In any case, I predict we'll soon start to hear in interviews with Padres brass, he's a great presence behind the plate and calls a great game.

by Billy Almon on Jun 20, 2007 8:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Last night
Early on when there was yet another stolen base with Peavy on the mound, ABY said to me "Guess they can't blame Mike Piazza for that one!" Music to my ears.

Padres pitchers - every single one - do not care about base runners stealing. At least, it seems that way since they never attempt to hold them on. It has to be a coaching philosophy to not work on moves to first. I've never known a whole team to be so bad at it no matter WHO is behind the plate.

Bud Black
Doesn't care about base stealers. Maddux said something like only 10% of basestealers score or something along those lines, and so it is a policy they have adopted. It seems to have worked out so far.

I can admit this now.
I was never a big fan of Bowen's. Last year he was good to have around because of the Piazza factor. Mike would get a hit in the seventh, Bowen (with pretty good speed) would come out and run for him and then finish catching the game. With Piazza gone, he was just another "guy". He didn't have a very good arm...as a Padre he threw out only four of 35 would be base stealers. His bat was less than impressive. He strikes out over twice as many time as he walks. Low on-base percentage. Rob Bowens are VERY easy to come by.

Kyler could end up being pretty good...but who the hell knows? He's rated as the Padres 9th best prospect. But he's 19 and in A ball. He could be a star or he could be serving anyone of us a fish taco at Rubio's in five years.

This trade is a SLIGHT improvement
better to have Bard and Barret rather than Bard and Bowen. More power is a plus, but his OBP is lower than Bard's. This isn't the offensive upgrade we need to win 97 games, but it is a plus, and I'll take it.

Now, let's concentrate on getting Adam Dunn!

by RBS on Jun 20, 2007 9:01 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
It is a little bit of an improvement offensively, but we don't need huge upgrades right now. Some minor upgrades, be it in the field or off the becnh should keep us more than competitive. I like this trade, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some more movement by KT.

Gotta agree with my good friend RBS
I'm new to the board, although been reading it for a few weeks, so I'll be on my best behavior.

We need a big bat to complement Adrian, and Dunn's going to be the best available (unless Junior Griffey decides he wants out of Cincy, but he would probably go to Atlanta).

Dunn and Branyan are both big boys, but Branyan is no Dunn. Russ has never hit more than 20 HR, is a career .231 hitter and his lifetime OPS is 80 points lower than Dunn's.

Dunn's batting .267 this year, is second in the NL in HRs and draws a boatload of walks (although they're down somewhat this year for some reason). He does strike out a ton, but I'll take a K over a DP any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Dunn = Branyan? Not a chance.

need to upgrade LF
Do you really like the Sledge/Cruz/Branyan platoon in left better than Dunn?

Dunn is a below-average LF defensively, obviously. However, he has much better offensive numbers than all of our current LFs combined -- including stolen bases!

If you can't find room in the lineup for a 40-HR, 90-100 RBI guy with some speed on the basepaths...

I don't have any issues with Barrett's attitude. His only dust-ups were with two of the biggest douchebags in baseball. However, I was a mild fan of Bowen's so it's a little sad to see him gone.

In any case, our catching platoon is better now. I was wondering how KT was going to handle this since Bard's numbers are down from last year. I'm excited to see Barrett catch and hit for us.

Brownie...
Brownie was a full-on PRICK. Not even a question about it. But I'll tell you what. He played one season in SD...and he's in my top 5 favorite Padres all-time. I loved Brownie. His intensity. Him breaking lights all the way down the tunnel and into the clubhouse. Destroying toilets. That guy was awesome. Ahh, Brownie. Just a flat-out sutd.

I'll fully admit that any skepticism I have about Barrett is based completely on rumors in the media and the general attitudes of Cubs fans that I've talked with over the years.

My real concern about Barret is team chemistry. I just hope he's not a super serious asshole and that he doesn't mind seeing some man-meat (Giles's) every now and then.

Let's welcome our new Padre
So far, Michael Barrett has done zero bad things in a Padre uniform.

One interesting thing about Barrett, if you look at his history, is that he can play 3B and 1B (and SS in a pinch).

He isn't any better than Bowen at throwing out runners (18% for the last two years), but he's about as good as Jorge Posada, Jason Varitek, Johnny Estrada and Brian McCann. He's allowed the third-most passed balls in baseball this year, but in 2005 he was one of the best on passed balls allowed. (He played a lot of 1B last year after Lee got hurt.) I think he's just having a bad defensive year, an anomaly for a guy who's an average defensive catcher historically-speaking.

Anyway, he immediately becomes the second or third best hitter on the Padres, at a position where offensive production is usually scarce. We got him much in the same way we got Bard -- a big city team overreacted and shipped him out of town. Maybe he just needs to go surfing, take his clothes off, eat a fish taco and relax!

More on Barrett....
This is from Mike Downey of the Chicago Tribune. Downey used to write for the LA Times. He's a good writer. But he is now in Chicago...so we still have to be skeptical.

My favorite part of the article:

"Barrett is now an ex-Cub. He has been traded to the San Diego Padres for a pittance of what a starting catcher would normally be worth on the open market.

In one fell swoop, the Cubs have rid themselves of a lightning rod and have dramatically improved San Diego's chances of winning the National League pennant (thereby reducing the Cubs' chances of winning it, minuscule as they already are)."

Bowen was making $380k, while Barrett something like $4.5m. I would assume Pads would get some cash... but dunno.

What I've read
indicates that of Barrett's remaining $2.2m salary, the Cubs will pay $1.5m and the Padres will pay $700k.  I think that's the cash consideration.

by Demoira on Jun 20, 2007 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Poor Bowen
has to play for Lou Pinella now.  Not only that, but he's being moved from a team with healthy post-season possibilities to a team with none.  I don't envy him.

While I'm happy we got Barrett and believe he will be a plus to the team, count me in the Bowen fan camp.  My dad and I were talking this past Father's Day about how we would almost prefer seeing Bowen in the game as Bard, although we might have still been high after watching that home run derby against the Cubs that afternoon (Bowen hit home run #5).

by Mr Meadows on Jun 20, 2007 10:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Moment of Silence for Bowen?
I won't miss him as a catcher.  But I feel sort of bad for him as a human being.  The Cubs are a mess.  Not to mention all these fans convinced they're 'cursed'.  How about this: You give us 60 million of that payroll for KT to acquire players with, and we'll take that 'curse' right off your hands.

The Cubs are the Amtrak of baseball.

Like I says, it makes no difference, quit saying we're classless when you got guys like Smooth Jazz Man that deride the city of San Diego, gaslampball, and the "F*ing Padres" as he calls them everyday on BleedCubbieBlue.

We talk the same smack talk about the Cubbies as we do with the Dodgers, and other teams that generally other people also talk smack too.

So if you are a Yankees fan, are you going to think the entire Nation is classless because the entire world is Yankees haters.  Come on now.  You're a cubs fan, you relish in self-misery, that is what you are so proud out about.  Classless, whatever.

yeah,
but it's not polite to laugh. They may not appear so, but they're very senstive about their team.

I was at the "brawl" game last saturday (my friend has season tickets), and we'd spent the majority of the game texting back and forth with his old roommate about how terrible branyan is. It was my contention, of course, that branyan was the best left fielder in the game(where he played that day), second only, perhaps, to the sledge/cruz platoon.

After Branyan sealed the deal with our only hit out of the infield that day, the lines of communication were cut, to which my friend said, "that's the last I'm going to hear from him for 2 weeks."

He was complaining about comments being made here on GLB. Said he lost a lot of respect for us.

by osbug on Jun 20, 2007 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

since I was called out...
I've been checking out your site to see what you think of the trade for most of the morning. In retrospect my comment at BCB was very reactionary. 99% of the comments over here have been fine and certainly don't fit the description. It was simply one or two comments by a certain individual that irritated me. I shouldn't have made a general statement about the situation as I did. Sorry about that.

While I'm here I'll throw in my 2 cents about the trade. I'd be lying if I said I was familiar with either of the players we got in the trade so I'll just talk about Barrett. This has been a rough year for Barrett both at and behind the plate. He has never been an exceptionally gifted defensive catcher. Barrett's saving grace has always been his bat and he wasn't hitting worth anything this year. I think it's very possible that things just snowballed on him this year. I think that a change of scenery could do him some good and I think he could be a good productive ballplayer for you. He had become rather unpopular in Chicago for his lack of production and his apparent issues with our pitching staff. On the field he may be a hot head, but from all accounts off the field he is a good guy. He has gone out of his way to interact with the fans here in Chicago and has actually done interviews with the Cubs blogs. Anyways, as I was saying I could see him turning things around out in San Diego with a fresh start. I wish him well.

understandable
I post at a Bears weblog on this network called Windy City Gridiron and we have a guy who tends to make enemies wherever he goes. For the week leading up to the game he hangs out at the blog for whoever we are playing and talks a lot of trash. He does leave after that, but it tends to irritate a lot of people. Some sites are ok with it and some not so much.

as a side question: How do you think the players on the Padres, specifically guys like Young and Peavy who were heavily involved in the activities feel about having Barrett on the team? It seems like with the veterans you have on your team it shouldn't be a problem but you never know.

Jake is the ONLY one I would thik about!
What you guys saw in CY last weekend is not typical of him :-)

As Drama posted below, Kevin Towers was just on Jim Rome's show and confirmed that Greg Maddux pretty much pushed for the trade was asked. From everything we have read, Maddux is a second pitching coach for Jake and CY. They all sit together in the dugout when they are not pitching and hang out together on off days. With a mature influence like that, I think the young guys will be fine. Shoot, Jake should totally respect whatever fire is burning in Barret! I can just picture Jake cussing a string at himself as he did at one point last night and having Barret shout back in agreement ;->>

I'm less concerned after hearing KT, but am still holding back judgment until I see him interact with our boys.

The posts have been pretty tame on both sides. I don't think anyone really knows what to expect from the trade. I think it will work out well for both of us. A change of scenery will help out Barrett and Bowen will continue to be a serviceable backup.

You're getting a great dude in Bowen, with a good OBP. His defense is only so-so, but maybe his stats will look better on a team that puts more stress on holding runners.

and someone actually ASKING our opinion (i.e. finding out what bases the rationale behind our thoughts)

IMO...we've had "cancers" or so it seemed in our clubhouse (Nevin, maybe Klesko, depends on opinion, Mirabelli)...and they quickly found themselves non Padres members.

I think Barrett will get along fine...the minute he doesn't, there aint no way he holds cred with guys like Maddux, Peavy, Hoffman, and I think we would soon see him not on our team.

I'd trade Blum..

Sigh...poor poor Uncle Barry
OK, perhaps poor was the wrong choice of words. It's really the opposite. He saw to that in the off season. Which is why karma is now kicking him in the butt. He could have been home in San Diego surfing his favorite spots and hanging with his family. Big Mistake Barry! Huge!

Barrett
I've been tied up all morning and just got around to reading all this.  And I'm sure all of this has been covered, but...

For what it's worth, I like the deal.  For a number of yrs, he was considered one of the best young catchers in the league.  Can hit and does a good job defensively.

Like any team in disarray, the Cubs were pointing fingers and most of them ended up pointing at Barrett because he was an easy target - understandable when the expectations in Chicago were high and they're struggling.  It's just part of the game.

But I think that in about a month, people are going to be wondering why they dumped him for nothing.  Not that it wasn't the right thing to do for Chicago and for Barrett - the relationship was over - but I think that in SD, we're going to see Barrett do well and get along with everyone and add a lot to the team and it's going to look like a great pick up for the Pads.

Red Sox series news....
After an MRI on Schilling's shoulder he will not start Sunday against Jake Peavy. Josh Beckett will replace Schilling and be on his normal 4 days rest because of an off-day Thursday.

Damn I am pissed that I wont even be around a TV to see it!! Argh!! Gonna have to check the batteries in the old portable radio.

Not according to MLB.com...
Friday - Dice K vs. CY
Saturday - Wakefield vs. Mad Dog
Sunday - Beckett vs. Jake

Dammit.
Chad Tracy just hit a 3-run bomb to put the D-Bags up 3-0 on the D-Rays. I guess we should just be happy they beat 'em once, huh?

LOVE IT!
I think this trade is a great one! When I first read  that we got Barrett I expected to see a couple good prospects or a reliever go, but since it's just Bowen and a prospect its all good. My only concern is the well-being for Bard. He earned a starting job this year and it's just been taken away from him. That can't be good for the guy's morale.

But still a solid trade, nonetheless.

i'm a little slow
bard is now the back-up catcher?
But I don't know what a dead bird smells like...

Bard
Well, a lot of people are saying that KT wouldn't trade for a guy like this if he didn't expect him to start everyday. Barrett will start tonight, but there are no guarantees as to who has the job right now. I'm assuming that Barrett will take over, and that Bard will start against tough righties or something like that. But Barrett is too good to sit him on the bench every night.

But what do I know?

by JollyWaffle on Jun 20, 2007 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it could be good for Bard
he did really well with the rest last year.  Everytime I look at the lineup I was surprise Bard was in, I was hoping Buddy would give him a day off every now and then.  But I don't think they were all that confident in Bowen, as much as I like the guy, he was a degrade behind the plate and I never felt comfortable with his at-bats.

Oh Boy
First: I just spent five hours at the auto shop when I was only supposed to be there for about 30 minutes.  I'm really beat, and stressed, and should not be on here.

That said:

I feel a little heart broken for Bowen.  Not that I was a fan.  I actually don't have any strong feelings toward Bowen one way or another.  He was a servicable player.  He didn't kill me; he didn't blow me away.  BUT, he must be feeling absolutely crushed.  I mean, not only is he being traded from the best team in the NL in the best city in the country, but he's going to a team that is imploding!  And a team that his team was just in a brawl with.  Poor Bowen.

Otherwise, anyone Maddux vouches for, I'm cool with.  I never got the feeling he was an instigator or trouble maker with the Zambrano thing (especially since he was the one that ended up with stitches).  It should be all good.

and another thing.....
Where were you last night? We will not be treated like this.

by Drama on Jun 20, 2007 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um, er
I was watching the game at a bar with a wild swinging crowd getting hit on and making out in the bathroom.  Then I came home, was too trashed to type, and fell asleep drooling on the keyboard.  But I was thinking of you the whole time.

Er, all of you.

(Or I decided that if there was a series to take off so that I can attempt to reclaim the 9 hours in order to write those 60 pages for my research grant, I figured it was the Orioles series, though I couldn't resist taking a peak at Jake pitching every so often.)

by Demoira on Jun 20, 2007 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The insinuation here
is that we are not a "wild, swinging crowd."

Not sure how to take that.

It was crazy in here last night. Dex dropped a Vlog. Jonny Dub was drunk on margaritas. Crazy times. Crazy.

Looking back
I can see that now.

I liked how you all "looked around" to see if there were any ladies in the house first, though.

Poor teemcee.  All alone with all that testoterone.

It's all good...
I was just holding it down for the GLB female nation.  I have sons so I'm able to turn a blind eye to the jock straps, scratching, empty beer cans, arm punching, "colorful" language, etc.

I am a lone island of estrogen awash in a sea of testoterone.

I'm so royally jealous that you and Christina got to party hardy at the park last night.  Sounds like it was a major blast!

by Demoira on Jun 20, 2007 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Party hardy may be an overstatement
We both had to drive so we limited ourselves to the one free beer each. However, it WAS awesome to be at the game with another 'baller. We could talk the lingo (A-gon, waffle boy, professional hitter. Khalilbot2.0 etc etc) and talk about what everyone else in here was probably saying. I really wish you guys were not all spread so far away from us! A Gaslamp Ball field trip to Petco is a must.

My guess: not soon enough for the game.  But that's merely a guess.

I heard he was available to start tonight if needed.

Whoever picks the photos
for the SD homepage, doesn't like Barrett anymore than he likes CY.  Really - is he almost sticking his tongue out, or what?

Also, does anyone know if Barrett has a nickname, or are we going to have to make one up for him, too?  I won't stand for M-Barr or some such nonsense!
