OPEN THREAD, 6/10: Padres vs Damn Mariners

OK... Get out the way. I got this Open Thread. I don't know what all this business was about these last couple days, but I don't ever want to see Jon's cats again. His cats are a little bit special if you know what I mean. Ain't no way an obviously special cat's gonna lead us to victory.

No. Jon. Give it up. Just give the cats some pudding, and let's get some real karma in here. CY's gonna need some help against King Felix, and I'm pullin' out all the stops.

GO PADRES!!! EXPERIENCE IT!!!

That just jinxed us.
Damn you!!!! I'm going to go sit in the sun in my backyard and try to forget you just did that.

What did everyone expect?
from the guy who kept saying "no hitter" over and over during CY's almost-no-hitter last year. Also, I think Dub's man-crush for Ichiro is so severe, he wants the hatred M's to win because it would make Ichiro happy...and when Ichiro is happy, Jon is happy, too.

Do you guys realize....
this is our 19th straight game without Brian Giles? Damn, that's a long time. He hasn't played since the second game of the Mariner series in Seattle.

No, I did not realize that. Interesting. So how have we done over that 19 game stretch?

Let me answer that later.
After turning two wins into two losses the last couple of nights...my mood is poor.

Yeah
Thankfully the sun has been out so I sat outside to read my SI and catch some rays before coming back in here for lunch and the game. Just feeling the warm sun made me start to feel better. So will a Padre victory, dammit!

If I counted correctly
we won 13 of those games.

by jbox on Jun 10, 2007 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes....13.
I don't really think that's a refelction on Brian at all. Maybe we win 15 of those with Brian.

Did not know that
Can't say his absence has been real noticeable.

by Winfield's Ghost on Jun 10, 2007 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, put it this way....
He plays a much better RF than the other guys. And if I'm pitching, I'd much rather see Sledge, P-Mac, Boca Burger, etc....than Brian digging in. He's been missed....we've just played well during the time he's been out. Maybe some of those one run games would have not been as close. Who knows?

by Drama on Jun 10, 2007 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I agree
I'd just like to see him come back and really do some damage.

And with CRUZ in the other corner - you heard that, Buddy?  CRUZ!!!

Anyone get any pics of Roger Clamans and friends
last night?

I got a couple but I was out in LF.

When the Clam ate the guy and spit out his shoes and hat, then the guy half-nekkid...my eyes popped outta my head.

People were laughing hysterically the entire time. I was a few free birthday beers to the wind, so I was laughing maniacally.

i really hate the mariners
as of now, i really and truly hate them.  because when we beat them, it's not that satisfying.  it's not like beating the dodgers, d-bags, or giants--and there isn't the satisfaction of beating a good NL team we might face in the playoffs.  and when we lose to the mariners, it's just frustrating beyond belief.  we lose to the mets or braves and i figure, get 'em next time. get 'em in the playoffs. you lose to the mariners and...you've lost to the mariners. agh. it drives me insane.

Your mascot
is a moose. I mean, your team's front office put their minds together and the best they could come up with was a moose?!? How's anyone who worships a moose gonna say anything about a unicorn or anything else? What the hell do moose do anyway? Here's a fascinating conversation I overheard in the forest the other day: Moose #1: "Had a pretty exciting day; I drank some water." Moose #2: "Oh, word? Me too. In fact, that's all we ever do." You know how many books have been written about moose? Me neither, but I'm positive it's a miniscule fraction of the number of books that have been written about unicorns. Why? Because unicorns are badass, that's why. You could, as Casey Stengel was fond of saying, look it up.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.

That about perfectly sums up that intellectual dump you just took on your blog. Email me your address and I'll send you some 2ply, because you seriously need to wipe after that idiotic rant.

Do you enjoy arguing about a mythical creatures?  You are in Southern California, give Gary Busey a call, you two have more in common than you think.

Additionally, if you are hearing conversations between animals you need to lay off the peyote.

If Washingtonians knew that the Mariners were the cause of this level of insanity in SoCal, we would have told JJ Putz to dial it down a little.

thanks
for plagiarizing billy madison you unoriginal ass
I'm just thankful that we have Blum on the team. His rock solid defense saved the game-jbox

Yeah, retardation, that's it.
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
Personally, when I'm about to call somebody retarded, I take the time to craft an original response. Plaigarism really conveys intelligence. Since the flannel brigade apparently takes everything seriously, I should explain that that last sentence was sarcasm.

You are in Southern California, give Gary Busey a call, you two have more in common than you think.
Actually, no, I'm not and no, I don't. Maybe the only way the Mariners could get fans outside of their hometown was to buy up Japanese talent when such a concept was novel but such is not the case with the Padres. Nice assumption; strike two.

Additionally, if you are hearing conversations between animals you need to lay off the peyote.
Once again, let's take everything seriously. This guy must sit at home listening to his Nirvana CDs thinking "Man, this guy was seriously requesting that someone violate him sexually."

If Washingtonians knew that the Mariners were the cause of this level of insanity in SoCal, we would have told JJ Putz to dial it down a little.
The Mariners definately aren't the source of any insanity around Southern California or GLB for that matter. Everybody knows it's the traitorous cats.

Oh, and one more thing: Ichiro. Enjoy him while you can. Before you know it, he'll be experiencing Petco 81 games a year.

Your excitement is understandable
If my team was coming off three straight years of last place finishes - instead of a couple of division titles - I'd be running around yelling "Yay!  We won a series!  Yay!", too.

It's tough to out suck the Texas Rangers but damn if you guys don't always find a way.  Good luck again this year.

Guys guys guys!
There's no need for insults! By acting like this you're only confirming Selig's designated Seattle/San Diego rivalry, and further empowering the commissioner like that doesn't work out in anyone's best interests.

Let's just shake hands, put our differences aside, and agree that Chris Young is funny looking.

Chris Young?
Chris Young??? Funny looking???

Yes.  He is.

For what it's worth, I did not peg Missau for a Lookout Landing-er.  You guys have way too much fun over there and I don't think any LLers would come in looking for a rumble.  It would be like a big nerd fight, where we all would be hitting each other with Blackberries, memory sticks and stuffed animals.

I've always thought if GLB and LL got together, it would look like the end of a soccer game - jersey swapping and sweaty hugs.

(But, seriously.  You guys would have way more fun if you'd just give the unicorn a chance.)

I like the unicorn.
I especially approved of its use last Wednesday. Every team has to have its rally starter.

Jeff is like DodgerBlueBalls
...one of the good ones. I like opposing teams' fans that are good-natured about the whole thing. It makes for a nice back-and-forth.

Hell if the M's were
in the NL West the last few years maybe we would have made the playoffs. It only took you guys 82 wins two years ago, and the M's killed the NL West (other than the Rockies) last year.

Aha!
You just made a great point. However, it's in our favor. The Mariners sweeping San Diego is a fluke, an aberration, just like the Rockies owning anyone (yes, I'm actually giving Seattle credit for being a superior ballclub to the Rockies). What's that old saying? Something about a blind squirrel. . . ah, yes; "even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then". That's it.

But we found three nuts.
And you guys might want to try and find out what they say about blind bullpens.

by Jeff on Jun 10, 2007 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just be thankful
you never had to face our blind starter.

No wonder he's so good.
Nothing more terrifying than a blind pitcher with a mean streak.

We also did pretty well
against you guys last year if I remember correctly.

Yes in the NL
where 83 wins can get you into the playoffs. 82 in 05.

by DZ on Jun 10, 2007 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

next time
Take five seconds on espn.com to look up what our record was last season, which happened to be 88 wins. Which was 10 more wins than your dead last mariners.

Oh yah, and since when did number of wins matter? I seem to remember the Cardinals, with the worst record of all the playoff teams, beat your amazing American League.

So why don't you try to have a winning season before you start talking.

I'm just thankful that we have Blum on the team. His rock solid defense saved the game-jbox

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Jun 10, 2007 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know what your record was
the Cards won 83 games. Because of the lack of talent in the NL the M's very well may have had a winning record had they been in the National League.

by DZ on Jun 10, 2007 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

All in all, we're doing okay.
You're in a pretty good spot when you can get swept and still be in first place (yes, I know that at a glance it appears to be a tie but look at the percentage points; AZ's played two fewer games). It sure beats winning three in a row to bring yourself up to four-and-a-half back.
