Angry Bard storms the field

Pads' Bard, Black ejected in 11th after disputing HR call

"I ran around the bases, I thought it was a home run," Bard said. "My intent wasn't to go out and go after anybody. But after looking at the video, they got the call right. I made a mistake."

The ump signaled Josh "Story time" Bard back to second base after what was originally called a home run.  When Bard took the field he was immediately ejected.  These screen shots clearly show he was just trying to take the field to find his place at second as the umpire requested.  Unfortunately the umpire was in between Bard and second base and that's the reason that he made accidental contact with him.  So really this whole thing is just a big misunderstanding. Can't we all get along?

So what do you think the result of this brawl will be?  A fine?  A suspension?  Jail time?  I bet the commissioner will make an example out of him and give him hard labor on a chain gang.

What are your thoughts?  Vote in the poll.

slap on the wrist
he bumped the umpire, which we all know is a no-no. small fine, like $5k, and a 3-4 game suspension. He should take it right away so he is available for the Dodgers series starting Tuesday.

RBS
I don't consider a 3 or 4 game suspension a "slap on the wrist".

Bardo
New to the blog and happy to have found it...

All I know is that after tossing Bard, the ump was about as mad as I've ever seen an ump get. There was pure evil in his eyes! I hope Bard said something really foul to get himself tossed when he was in the dugout and the ump was near second base.

Heading to the weekend series here in DC and couldn't be happier about tonight's matcup.

games in dc
Thanks.  Games at RFK are good times.  They remind me of games at Qualcomm in the couple years before Petco.  Nobody there.  Pretty bad home team. Kinda ugly but loveable stadium.  And they let you in the door for about 6 bucks.

I went to a gme there last summer
against the Pads. Piazza hit a PH HR in the 9th to tie, and we won it in the 10th. It was awesome.

super crappy stadium, but the food was good.

i was there too
My dad and brother and I went last year because they have never been to DC. The Padres swept and it was so fun. I remeber Piazza hitting the HR and then looking in to the dugout to see their reaction. It was fun too.

after watching the video again
I'm not 100% sure Bard touched the ump. he's running so fast (Bard?) and then stops and moves slightly to avoid the ump. Is there video elsewhere, perhaps from another camera angel that shows whether or not Bard touched him?

Anyone got the video? Times like this i wish i had my pc hooked up to the cable again.

Josh...
I think the initial penalty will be a 5-game suspension with a small fine. He may be able to appeal and get it knocked down to 3 games.

What pisses me off is the umpires did NOT get it right. Were they right that it wasn't a homerun? Yes. But the ball hit the railing and ended up back in play. Josh ran around the bases and touched home plate. That's an inside-the-park homerun. Why were the Padres punished because the Pirate outfielders don't know the rules in their OWN damn ballpark??

Let's say for the sake of argument that Xavier Nady or Chris Duffy had caught that ball on the fly after it had dinged off the railing. Now let's say they had turned and rifled the ball to second before Josh got there. What would the umps have called then?

The bottom line is that we lost a run and probably our starting catcher for at least a few games.

Bard's story checks out
He was heading back to second as per the umpire's request.  At a full sprint while wearing his catching gear.

Clearly
the last frame shows Bardo turning around to excuse himself for not seeing and brushing the ump in his haste to return to second base as per blues request.

A big mis-understanding....really.

THAT's why they call me...

eh.
He'll get 3 games.

Fiery catchers
Barrett and Zambrano just got into a fistfight in the Cubs dugout.

Both free agents next year. Bring 'em in!

Carlos Zambrano
is probably making a big ole mess for the janitor in the Cubs' locker room...

Chris Gwynn
Speaking of messes for janitors, Wiggins hears Chris Gwynn used to "kill it" quite regularly in the Dodgers and Padres clubhouses. Ain't no party like a Chris Gwynn post-burrito supreme bathroom party.

hmmmm
I wonder if this has anythig to do with zambrano wanting to change catchers?

by fairweather on Jun 1, 2007 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

fist fight
I think...  the ball got by Barrett and thorman tried to steal third, barret made a bad throw over there and thorman stole home.  It was already 6-1 before that so I dunno what the beef was about.

I like Barrett but only take Zambrano if we can turn him into an outfielder.

the braves guys
on tbs were saying it looked like Zambrano was miffed about that throw by Barrett and an earlier mixup with pitch calling.

then Barrett pointed to the scoreboard as if to say 'hell, they've also got 15 hits, dummy'

Bard is am embarassment
"Storytime" Bard should be let go. What a jerkface. Wiggins should be the Padres' new catcher!

And who's going
to catch for us next time YOU get a time-out!!?

by ABY on Jun 2, 2007 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 Games + Fine
Heard it on XX a few minutes ago... Bard is appealing the decision. Hopefully it won't keep him out of the Dodger series.

by ShaneHale on Jun 1, 2007 3:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

he should jsut take it now
and lose the weekend against the Nats, rather than miss a game vs. the Dodgers. Also, good chance Trevor's 500th will be next week, and he'll want to be catching that.
