David Wells calls out Roger Clemens

ESPN:  Wells doesn't agree with Clemens not traveling

"I don't think I would ever do it because of the fact I personally think it would disrespect the team and your teammates," Wells said, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "You look at the other players. How are they going to respect you? What are they going to think if you're not there pulling for the team?"

Future Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux agreed with Wells, his San Diego Padres teammate.

"I can't imagine doing that," Maddux said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "I like the game. I like the atmosphere. I appreciate what it has to offer. I want to play the whole year."

You tell him Boomer!  Though to be honest, Wells has been threatening to retire for awhile also but keeps coming back when the money is right.  At least he takes care of business in the off season and shows up "in shape" for Spring Training.  At that point he's a member of the team and seems to genuinely care about his teammates. Clemens is just a pure mercenary who only loves money and Andy Pettitte.

Maddux really just seems to love the game and will pitch as long as he is able can compete.

Wells told the Sun-Sentinel, "That's not the Yankee way. The Yankees have changed."

Actually it kind of is the Yankee way, but it sure doesn't make a good team.  There must be zero team chemistry in the Yankee clubhouse.

The more he thought about it, Wells warmed up to the idea of going for those rings as a part-time player.

"Roger might set the tone for the 40-and-above guys," Wells said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "Hey, I might do it. He's a smart businessman."

Wait what?  Here I was admiring Wells for speaking up against Clemens and now he's considering it for himself.

in true leftish media way...
lets ignore that last comment, take Wells out of context, and just pretend he said something honorable!

Can we just not talk about Clemens?
Seriously, I hate the guy for so many reasons.  Can we just put a moratorium on all things Roger until we're ready to kick his old, fat, arrogant ass in the World Series in October?

Yes, seriously.
Clemens is a giant a-hole.  I second the motion.

The only reason I mentioned it again
was because Boomer and Maddux kind of became part of the story.

"STOP IT!
Alright, no one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "Jehovah. "

Sure
I gotcha - its totally relevant to GLB and I was being more wishful than anything else - its impossible to ignore a giant a-hole when he forces himself on the world like Roger does.

Oh C'mon.
We can try!   ;)  We'll have to turn off ESPN though.

Wells
would totally do it...in fact, he already has.  Every season he goes on the DL, he's really doing what Clemens is doing.

It's not even the same
Being hurt vs. not going to Spring Training and waiting until mid season to sign is different.  Plus not traveling on road trips?

by jbox on May 8, 2007 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Hurt?
or repercussions for not taking care of your body or  what you put in it?

by ABY on May 8, 2007 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably both
but I still don't see how that is the same as what Clemens is doing.

by jbox on May 8, 2007 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

It's the same, but different
The whole traveling thing is special treatment for sure.

The partial season though is just someone realizing and reacting to their limitations.  Boomer and others can say they play a full season, but they all know they won't hold up.  Inevitably, the injury bug hits and they're out.  Clemens is smart enough to know it's gonna happen and he plans around it.  Get his body in shape for a short season and have a major impact.

i think
Boomer looks like he's lost weight since the whole diabetes thing.  Looks like his shirt isn't as tight over his belly.  Or he's wearing a bigger shirt. . . .

20 LBS
Heard something a couple of days ago on the radio - said he'd dropped 20.

fewer injuries
with the new diet and lost weight?  I think he's finally starting to take care of himself.

Sounds like...
somebody has a crush on Boomer.

That does it

classic...
are you a lawyer?? that would be funnier if it was dictated on a commerical in a really fast legal disclaimer voice.

by bktabinga on May 8, 2007 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually
Mrs. GrandHatching is a lawyer, but she sometimes gets me drunk and makes me edit her legal documents.

WOAH
You may think you got one by, but this is a family blog, TheGrandHatching! I don't want to know about you "editing" your wife's "legal documents" or "formatting" her "margins" or "typing up" her "briefs".

Save that for more unsavory sites.

You
really are bored out there, aren't you?

by ABY on May 9, 2007 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions

That's funny
I initially wrote "briefs" instead of "documents".  I then changed it because, well, I didn't want to make it seem like my wife takes advantage of me...I mean, she's usually very nice -- and ...I like doing stuff...her briefs...oh jesus, help me.  please.
