Random Stuff

  • Peavy was awesome today. One hit in seven innings and a no hitter through five and a third. I like this new version of Peavy. He's got his arm back, he's healthy and he seems so much more relaxed. You actually see him smiling out on the mound. Earlier in his career you could see him chewing himself out in a tight situation. This year if he misses a pitch you'll see him smile occasionally or just throw the next pitch. He still puts emotion into his game but he's learned to control it. He's just simply become a better pitcher than he ever was. We always knew he could throw, but now he can pitch. I've compared Jake Peavy to Luke Skywalker in the past. You knew he had the force, but he started off as a whiny kid, who was reckless and couldn't control his emotions. Now he's becoming Luke from Jedi, the one dressed all in black with the cloak. He's got that confidence that Luke had when he walked into Jabba's palace and was like "I'm taking Captain Solo and his friends. You can either profit by this... or be destroyed! It's your choice. But I warn you not to underestimate my powers."
  • Roger Clemens signed with the Yankees today.  Something about this really irks me.  Why couldn't Clemens just get in shape and go to Spring Training like everybody else?  He's so dramatic and lazy.  It's a shame that teams let him get away with this sort of behavior.  I know he's a very good pitcher and he has earned some special treatment, but to me he seems to really take advantage of his situation.  Yankee players are happy to have him in their Minor League system now to help their struggling rotation.  If he was really interested in helping the Yankees win a World Championship, then wouldn't he be there the entire season?  The real reason is he's selfish and arrogant.  He said he was going to wait to see which team had the best chance to win before he made a decision and join that team, but it was really about the money all along. I knew that, we knew that but it's just ridiculous. To make it even worse the PA guy at Yankee Stadium hands the microphone over to him during the 7th inning and he says: "Well, they came and got me out of Texas ..." and then he tells the press how Jeter called him once a week to beg him to come back. He's doing everybody such a big favor, but he'd really rather be at home with his family. If you want to spend so much time with them, retire... for real.
  • Have you noticed that the Pad Squad got themselves a BeDazzler? They've put rhinestones on the front of their jersey. They sparkle as they bring major league memories to you and your friends. I think one of the guy Squadders thought I was checking him out when really I was just bedazzled. No, really I was. It was the shiny things, I'm telling you they hypnotized me!

$28 Mil
Pro-rated contract...what is that almost $1 Mil a start for Clemens?

If Luke is a Jedi,
Does that make Maddux Yoda?

Use the Force, he will.

Padres Bullpen is the Shite

If Maddux is Yoda
then B. Giles is C3P0 and Marcus is R2-D2.

Wells is Han Solo.

Chris Young is Chewbacca.

To fill out the starting rotation
'lil Clay Hensley should be a character, but I really don't see him as anything more than an Ewok.  In fact, he seems like the kind of Ewok that was killed by storm troopers.  Is that wrong?

I meant if JAKE is a Jedi, not Luke
Been celebrating the Padres and Spurs winning,

Clemens
Clemens is old..that's why he starts late.   He knows he can't make it a full season...so he preps later and plans on a short season, so that someone can use him when it counts..prior to, and hopefully thru, the Post Season.

I see nothing wrong with it.  In fact, it's more of a gamble for the club than any "dramatics" by Clemens.

The thing I have trouble with is how gay Clemens is for Pettite...dude, has there ever been such an out and out man love in sports before?  Clemens follows Pettite wherever he goes, like some Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks movie.

by thenerdhater on May 6, 2007 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

Pettite
Yeah that's true.  He's like "oh dude, Pettite is going to be so angry with me that I didn't tell him first!

I agree it is a big gamble for any club, he's crazy old, but does he have to make such a big production out of everything?

by jbox on May 6, 2007 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

disagree...
is it really clemens that is making the big production? His retirement ceremonies every year are pretty lavish, but his unretirements are just media hype. I'm kind of glad they got it over with so soon this year.

by pjbno4 on May 7, 2007 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I disagree with this disagreement
Media hype? They kept the entire thing completely under wraps before bringing him into Yankee Stadium for the 7th inning stretch so he could announce that he was coming back to the fans. It was all obviously orchestrated specifically to build hype.

Fact: Roger Clemens is among the greatest pitchers of all time.
Fact: Roger Clemens is motivated by large sums of money.
Fact: Roger Clemens thinks extremely highly of himself to an almost narcissistic level.

Those three facts are not mutually exclusive. I'm not impressed with his shtick.

by Dex on May 7, 2007 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions

I hate Clemens for this.
These theatrics are ruining the integrity of the game. If the dude can't make it through a full season then he should not play! Plain and simple.

I know you can't blame a guy for making as much money as he can in today's market, but you can decide not to be a fan.

by wait till next year on May 6, 2007 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree
If you still have something to offer a club and they have room/money for you in the 2nd half, then so be it.  It's not ruining the game to let him play less than others.  No different than a Mike Piazza type player that can still hit, but can't catch every day. Or for that matter, a back up catcher...his only job is to give the main catcher a few days off.

This
is just weird:

I think Geoff must have forgotten an anniversary or something.

He's normal except for the tanning booths, shaving his body, and walking around with no clothes.

Man that really is weird
I'm not sure what the idea is behind that.

as very wisely noted in

Also, regardless of individual Padre performances this year, I will be lobbying heavily for Kory for Team MVP.

Post echoes my feelings
Babes Loves Baseball feels the way I do.

You know how I know you're gay? You pay a dude nicknamed "Rocket" large sums of money to pitch to your backstop.

by Dex on May 7, 2007 8:08 AM PDT reply actions

Why, Blum?
I was wondering why Blum would write that weird, oddly personal article.  Then I got to the last line: "the game will not define me in the eyes of my wife and children.  I like that."

Now it's clear: Blum is not a .103 hitter to his family!  He likes that.  But why is this in the sports page?  He's still hitting .103, and slugging .154 for the Padres.

This is the result of a lost bet or an AWESOME prank by a teammate....I'm looking at the Giles bros.

I think its awesome
Dude loves his wife and wow 4 kids. I love my wife, and she would feel honored if I wrote something like that. Maybe instead of writing in for  the paper, I'll just send her an instant message.

That said, Blummer needs to hit better. you can do it, Geoff.

by RBS on May 7, 2007 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree
I'm not a fan of most public displays of affection..and writing an article with the complexity of an 8th grader's book report all to profess your love, is just creepy.

It's great if he feels that way, but why write all that in a newspaper article?

by thenerdhater on May 7, 2007 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

my guess is that
he knows that he's fallen out of favor with the majority of padres fans -- this is a way to score popularity points with the softies.

by TheGrandHatching on May 7, 2007 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

who cares if he wrote it...
my command asked me to write stuff about my experiences on deployment for a hometown paper and I had no idea what to write so I wrote stuff about missing my wife and cheesy stuff.

No one gave me any crap about it.

We as a public sure do hate public displays of affection but we sure do LOVE public displays of humiliating other people at their expense.

thinking it over
I'm sure most of these comments were meant in friendly jest/sarcasm.  But I too, as evidenced by some of the contributors to Gaslamp, have particular sore spots that get me all defensive.

by bktabinga on May 7, 2007 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Batting avg is overrated
I've been doing some number crunching ever since I read that article this morning.  According to my calculations, Geoffrey Edward Blum's love for his beautiful wife Kory and fifteen children (or TWERP) should be worth about another 6.5 wins for the Pads this year.  If he can pop out another kid, we'll make the NLCS easily.

David Wells
impresses me by calling out Rocket.  ESPN quoting Wells who questions the intent and desire of Rocket joining team midway and commanding contract, money of a halftime player.

Wish I had the transcript because I'm paraphrasing heavily.

His ERA sure sucks right now, but I'm still glad the boomer is on our side.
