Quick! We need a plan!

I know some of you are a little worried after the Padres have dropped 3 straight games.  I don't want any of you to worry.  Buddy Black has got a plan to kick start the offense.

1.  Put runners in motion
Pros: Runners in motion will create holes in the infield
Cons: You need to have base runners or this plan is gonna suck.

2.  Stay upbeat
     Pros:  Winners have positive attitudes
Cons:  Maybe winners have positive attitudes because they win.  You never hear about the losers with positive attitudes, probably because there aren't any.  Plus how do you stay upbeat when you are hitting under .150?  "Hey you have 15 hits! --mumbles-- in 100 at bats."

3.  Give cold hitters a day or two off
Pros: Players might need a rest both mentally and physically.
Cons:  While you're resting there is someone worse than you playing.  He's been resting this whole time you've been playing, the rest hasn't done him any good.

Friar John
Just a quick note that if you hadn't already heard, the Padres will be the featured club on this Saturday's episode of This Week in Baseball.  The show begins at noon on Fox, and will include segments on the Giles brothers, the San Diego Chicken, and San Diego's mass of devoted fans.

the braves are a good team
and everybody knows it.  they have the best manager in baseball (cox), one of the best catchers in baseball (mccann), a 2-time MVP (chipper), a should've been MVP with about 10 gold gloves (andruw), a cy young winner (smoltz), a bullpen full of quality closers, an up-and-coming superstar (franceour), etc. etc.

if we have just gotten swept by the pirates or the marlins or even the giants i'd be a little down, but against the braves i would've been happy with 1-2.

we got good pitching from germano and we were in each game.  hopefully the next time we see them we're hot and they're not.

Plan C
How to jump-start a sputtering offense?

"We can possibly [not suck]," said manager Bud Black, who, according to third base coach Glenn Hoffman, is calling for more [not sucking] plays than the team averaged last season.

Typically upbeat, Black said he and his coaches also attempt to "lend a great deal of moral support." He added, "You keep encouraging the players [to not suck]. Stay positive with guys. It takes time to [not suck]."

Obviously this plan is predicated on not being 25th in the MLB in OPS. Go Pads.

Prepare your scorn
will you all hate me for this post? Perhaps. But I'll say it anyways. this team does not have the offensive power to win at all. Its not a matter of Cameron or Kouzmanoff turning it around, its much deeper than that. Yes, several key players are not hitting to their potential, or even hitting to their career averages. But that is the problem. Too many players on this team have career batting averages too low to believe that they can really turn it around. I recognize that AVG is not the only indicator of offensive performance at the plate, but is is critical. here's what I'm talking about.

Mike Cameron - career .250 hitter
Khalil Greene - career .253 hitter
Russell Branyan - Career .231 hitter
Geoff Blum - Career .250 hitter
Jose Cruz - Career .250 hitter

Some Solutions - I think the Glaus idea is a great one, obviously Ichiro would fit in nicely. But it's hard to imagine KT pulling the trigger to get 2 big names. Which begs the question, how do we solve this Gaslampballers? Cause I need to win. I need to win bad. I need to win or I'm going to go postal here.

I have no scorn for this post
I don't know that I'd call AVG critical, but I agree that if Pads win the division, it won't be because of a stellar or even above average offense. (I won't bother to mention that we were 13th in the NL in runs last year, oh wait I guess I just did.) We really need to win a ton of these 1 run games....and for Wells to not suck. I'm under no illusions that KT is going to bring in a slugger.
