Padres Nicknames

I've grown a little bit tired of the first initial last name abbreviation nickname that has been traveling around the majors like a case of the crabs.

I keep wishing we had a good nickname for Adrian Gonzalez just because if anybody deserves one it's him. Also because his first and last name are both three syllables which doesn't roll off the tongue that easily. I started off calling him A-Gon, Dex was really pushing for A-Go, then he came up with "El Natural" which I liked but just hasn't caught on. Ducksnorts was pushing for "El Hombre" for awhile until someone like Pujols was kind of using it.

I knew Dex was going to hate it but I suggested his nickname be "First Aid", I told him it worked on so many levels. Dex hated it as predicted and said you wouldn't be able to cheer for him without people thinking you were calling for help. Fine! Well I hate A-Go, so there.

I was thinking of "The Esse of Eastlake" but was told that may not be complimentary. Adrian grew up in TJ so I was thinking of the "The Tijuana Tornado" and the ideas just got worse from there.

In any case, maybe we should just have a little brain storming session about nicknames. Click read more and I've put a list of guys and the nicknames that I know.

Suggest some new ones if you like.

Adrian Gonzalez
How about "The Baja Baller" (or, alternatively, "The Baja Basher" or "Blaster", etc.)?

I was kicking around some nicknames that alluded to a donkey show, but I don't think I know you guys well enough yet.

HA!!!!!
These are great. I love Spockoli, the Scientific Calculator, and Ol' fractured fingers. The Baja baller is good, too. How can Hoffman not have a nickname?

by RBS on Apr 25, 2007 4:31 PM PDT   0 recs

Scientific Calculator
was one that Dex came up with, something about how Khalil busts more digits than a Scientific Calculator.

Speaking of the Vulcan
Nevin just told a story (which I did not hear word for word) which ended with the Vulcan telling a team mascot to "get the 'eff away from me". Nevin asked what was up with that and Greeney said he's hated those things since college - and he was dead serious! So there you have it, the Vulcan hates mascots. Guess someone should warn the Friar and Pad Squad creatures?

Hilarious!
How about "The Mascot Mangler"?

Great Story
but I'm a little confused, isn't Anger and emotion?  how is this possible?

by jbox on Apr 25, 2007 6:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I love A-gon
As in Gone - which is what he does to baseballs.

I like
First Aid too, but Dex is right...  being the recipient of mouth to mouth from complete strangers could get tiresome after a while.
When Russell was with the Brew Crew I believe they called him the Grand Branyon, he hasn't hit one for us yet, has he?

i love
Koozy... i loved when stephy08 asked him if it was ok to call him Koozy. me and stephy08 have always called geoff "blumer" or "blumenator." hahaha... Justin Hampson we just call him "sweetheart" which is what he wrote when he autographed a picture of him w/ stephy08.

How about Professor Blum
in the conservatory with the pipe?  You know from the game Clue?

You may need to scan that picture of him calling himself Sweetheart.

How about...
...Future HOFer?

by Drama on Apr 25, 2007 5:33 PM PDT   0 recs

my votes
*The ones that are locked in are Maddux, Wells, Brian Giles, and Geoff Blum (Blummer).
*The ones that have been floating here at Gaslamp that I like are Lil' Clay Hensley, The Claw, Russell the Muscle, and Koozy the Crushin' Russian (why not combine both?).
*Names have not been universally settled on, my vote goes to CY, the Robot Vulcan (or Spicoli as in Jeff Spicoli due to the resemblance and the hopes that Petco would play a few 'Fast Times' clips, and A-Gone.
*Out of the new ones, I do like The Shark, Sledgehammer, and simply Magnum for Jake. Here's suggestions for the rest:

Heath Bell - Heat
Doug Brocail -- Broken Heart [or Captain Caveman with that sweet beard he rocks]
Trevor Hoffman - Trevor (he's so good, he doesn't need a nickname)
Jose Cruz - Cheo (even though that's his dad's nickname)

CY...
I always liked Hombre Grande... a la Vinny and Adrian in the Padres ads last year.

by ShaneHale on Apr 25, 2007 6:03 PM PDT   0 recs

I think Geoff
came up with Russell the Muscle and one of the readers put together Spockoli.

Both are real good.

I like Grand Branyon, Sweetheart, Mascot Mangaler and the Baja Basher.

I like..
Khalil = Greeney
Adrian = Aid
Blum = Blummer
Peavy = Nuke LaLoosh
Mike Cameron = Cam
Trevor = Trevor or Hoffy
Pete LaForest HAS to go by his given name = Pierre-Luc. Awesome.

Question: Where is Josh Bard? Guy goes on the DL and he doesn't exist? Poor Josh.

by Drama on Apr 25, 2007 6:36 PM PDT   0 recs

Oh let me add him
Josh Bard is "Storytime" for his book reading programs that he participates in.

by jbox on Apr 25, 2007 6:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Bard
The Bard = Shakespeare. Fits in with the Storytime.

Heath Bell
I was listening to 1090 last week and they were talking about Heath Bell.  They mentioned his nickname was Taco (Taco Bell).  They also said something about his license plate being "Heater" or something to that effect.

by SocalKicks on Apr 25, 2007 8:18 PM PDT   0 recs

scott linebrink
makes things interesting at the end..."the plot twist"

by TheGrandHatching on Apr 25, 2007 9:27 PM PDT   0 recs

The Waffle Man
So the gf and I have been calling him A-Go from the get-go...which has slowly translated into the gf calling him The Waffle Man since A-Go sounds just like Eggo. I particularly enjoy the connection between waffles and saying "batter up!"

Shorty
Marcus Giles is Shorty. Seriously. I've stood next to the dude.

I'd like to see a picture of Shorty and CY together. Shorty ought to come up to about CY's belt buckle or so.

by wait till next year on Apr 25, 2007 11:16 PM PDT   0 recs

Ya
Good point, Marcus' song when he comes to bat is "Shorty Like Mine."

Fun Phrases
Sometimes its not the nickname that I like, but more of the overall context you can put a name/nickname in.

For example...

"We're Cruzing to victory"

"Sledge hammered one outta here"

"The Claw really tore Barry a new one"

A few more
Great stuff everyone, I'm definitely going to use a lot of these.

Blum: F7, GIDP Geoff or The White Flag (credit Geoff at Ducksnorts for that one)
Khalil: The Mechanical Man or Khalilbot.  I think I was first with Spockoli, still my favorite.
Heath Bell said his license plate frame reads "I break wood for a living" so I propose The Woodbreaker.
If Kouzmanoff ever starts hitting his homeruns shall be called Kooz Missiles.
Brian Gile: The Streak

by anthony on Apr 27, 2007 12:12 PM PDT   0 recs

Spockoli rules!
I like that for Khalil Thabit Greene a lot.

Jake Peavy = Alabama Fireballer

Brian Giles should be Walking David as in the nude statue of David but alive and walking, and he does walk a lot in the game.
Still OG rules!

Mike Cameron can be "Meep Meep" as in the road runner sound from the cartoon. He's just speedy.

by MadMonk on Apr 27, 2007 3:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No no
Jake Peavy= Alabama Slamma

by padresgirlforlife44 on May 28, 2007 11:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Mi Hijo
I think Adrian's nickname should be "mi hijo" (pronounced me-ho).  Mi hijo means "my son" in Spanish and it's a common term of endearment.  This nickname works on a few levels, it's Spanish so it plays on his heritage, he's from San Diego so it plays on him being a son of the city.  And it's just damn fun to yell, it's the kind of a nickname a stadium can chant.

by Daniel on Apr 27, 2007 1:02 PM PDT   0 recs

Another one for Greenie
That blonde hair sticking out from the back of his helmet reminds me of a canary tail so his new name is The Canary.

by anthony on Apr 28, 2007 11:04 PM PDT   0 recs

Greene canary
You tell me that you get everything you want, and your bird is Greene, but you don't get me!

You don't get... Meeeeeeeeee!
