John Moores speaks

UT:

I can't remember the last time I heard John Moores actually speak about the Padres.

"I was obviously disappointed as hell in the postseason - but I think this team potentially is a notch or two above last year,"
"In order for this team to win it all, we're going to need some guys to have breakout years, but it could happen. Can this team win it all? Why not? We won more games than St. Louis last year, and they won it all. It could happen."

Moores thinks Bochy is a child?!

What are Moores' impressions of Black?

"He is an adult," Moores said. Before elaborating, he said his comments shouldn't be construed as a slight to Bruce Bochy, whom Black is replacing.

"Black's a different guy obviously than Bochy - and that's not taking anything from Bochy. I love Bruce - but Black is different from him," Moores said. "He just interviews well, says all of the right things, is a baseball nut. He seems to have superior baseball personnel skills."

Moores also gushes about how smart Kevin Towers is and how he respects teams that win the World Series without spending much money.

This team is not a notch or two better than 06
We could still win the west, but I'm not buying what Moores is selling. This team is not an improvement from last year. The pitching staff is excellent, but no one will be hitting the ball. Doc? Gone. Piazza? Not here. Big run producer in the 3 or 4 spot? No one. We will not win in the postseason because we can't hit the ball.

It should also be noted that I hope I am wrong.

Does anyone else think we will hit this year?

this year's team really is clearly better
And what a treat to watch such short games in the NL West this year.  Dominant pitchers abound in our division and I'd much rather watch a 3-2 game than a blowout or a four hour slugfest.
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Perhaps I should tell you again
This team WILL NOT HIT THE BALL. We all rave about a great pitching staff, and I agree they should be dominant. But no offense equals a September fade or another quick playoffs exit. Why am I the only GLB reader who sees this?

RBS
What would it take from the Padres to prove you wrong?  A certain team batting average?  Slugging percentage?  Rank in the NL West?  # of wins?

pujols batting third
Seriously, We should do a statistical analysis of last years starting 8 and compare with our projected lineup this year. Who's up for it?

Ahem

Pujols
if you are hoping for Pujols, then you are going to be disappointed.  Maybe somebody else is up for the statistical analysis, I'll just watch the games this season and see how it works out.

Dude...
Seriously, what is your problem? Why are you trying so hard to bring us all down with your negativity towards the Padres? We're almost a month away from starting the season and you already have us dead and buried. Can you please just let us enjoy the spring?
And for the record, I don't agree with you. I personally think this 2007 team IS better than last season. Will this team be an offensive juggernaut? No. Probably not. But that doesn't mean that this team won't have more success in the playoffs.  That's if we're lucky enough to be there for the third season in a row.
Statistical analysis is bullshit. Let them play baseball.

88 Wins
I have the over/under at 88 wins (+-6wins)..

That will put us in contention in the last week of the season, which is the most the fans can ask for after that it is just a fortunate bounce of the ball for a three-peat.

The playoffs are a crap shoot, since the new format only one stat has any correlation (statistically speaking, not debate) with success and that is relief pitching K/BB ratio.

Fair Enough
And for the record, I hope I am wrong. And it is possible to win with strong pitching and mediocre offense, though I would just like to have seen us acquire one more big bat. It will take career years from most of the Padres regulars to have the type of offensive impact needed to win, and I hope we do it. I am an optimist, and I want to see the Padres win. Let's hope our team hits this year.

Last years team
was not very good - except in May and September.  We'll find out how good of a coach Bochy really was.  I was not a fan, but it is tacky to speak ill of the departed.  Back to your point - I think the talent on this team is about the same...nothing special.  We will either win or lose a bunch of 1-0 and 2-1 games.
