I like you, but apparently I don't like-you-like-you

For those of you who don't know, I actually relocated to Charlotte recently, leaving my home of 30 years in an effort to chase the dream of working in sports. Well, here I am, working in sports and what not. It's fun, but man am I busy. We have a TV set to ESPN constantly. I'm reading like 18 different blogs at the same time. I keep having to explain to high powered executives that "bloggers are people too"! It sounds like fun, and some days it is, but there's a steady stream of constant work.

All of which means that I'm looking forward to getting back to San Diego tonight if only for a few days to take a quick breather. When I return to Charlotte on Monday, it'll be back to the grind until eventually somebody hires me on to be CEO or CIO or COO of their team/firm/ballclub/internet porn venture. And when that happens? I'm totally blowing this joint.

No, I'm just kidding. Love you guys. Or at least I like you a lot. How much do I love-like you? Let me count the bullets...

The Ducksnorts Baseball Annual is available! Man, that's exciting. I'm looking forward to checking that sucker out. Someday, I gotta write a book. That has to be one of the most immensely satisfying experiences ever. This year's NaNoWriMO, I'm totally going to write my epic baseball science fiction romance novel.
I don't have internet or cable tv in the place I just moved into, so late at night, when I'm sitting in the empty house with no furniture, I've been passing the time by reading quietly in the corner. What do I read? Well, I've been reading Fantasyland by Sam Walker. Have you read this yet? If you've ever played fantasy baseball or shook your head in pity at your apparently insane fantasy baseball playing friends, then you should read this book. I'll put together a proper bookclub/review once I'm done, but I highly recommend checking it out.
Just to complete the baseball book trifecta, the next baseball book I plan on checking out is The Baseball Economist. Three things that fascinate all of us (and by "all of us" I mean "me"): Baseball, Money and the Mystical Lure of a Beautiful Woman. As far as The Baseball Economist goes, it apparently covers two of those things making it very close to being the perfect book for "all of us".
Given those three criteria, then this may be the perfect news item of the week: Alyssa Milano is pimping a new clothing line for MLB. There it is. The perfect news item.

So there's how much love-like I got in me for yall. Four bullet points worth. Three of them about nerdy books. Lots of nerd love in the hizz.

I feel ya Dex. I moved to Wash DC about a year and a half ago, and its been rough without my waves and Padres. Now I'm relocating again to North Carolina just before the Nats are set to have an embarrassing year filled with cheap beer and cheaper tickets. Oh well, guess I'll go see some Durham Bulls games...

enjoy the Bull-rito! That new stadium (the old one from Bull Durham is crumbling away, that's the thanks it gets for helping to pay for the younger, flashier tart of a stadium) may be my favorite minor league park in the country. Intimate is the best way to describe it. It has maybe 11,000 seats and even the "upper deck" feels close to the field. The organist actually sits among the seats on the concourse between the upper and lower decks. When you go, pray that someone wins a steak, or at the very least, a salad.

North Carolina?!? Is it April 1st? What the? Charlotte. Wow. The Pizza Feed Prophecy was right. Go figure.

Ah, Charlotte. One big sprawling suburb. So sprawling that their baseball stadium is in another state. Good luck finding a decent fish taco there. And when you attend your first Charlotte Knights game, let me know if that lone house is still standing way beyond the left power-alley wall. That house inexplicably cracks me up.

To riff off your line, I miss the East Coast, but I don't miss-it-miss-it. Enjoy your new environs.

Does this mean that the Gaslamp Day at the 'Co is still on? Or will you make a special trip out for it?

What are you doing for St. Patrick's Day? You should get in your car and head down to Savannah. It's only 4 hours.

Seriously, it's a good time. Second biggest St. Patrick's Day party in the US. I went last year and I'm still a little hung over.

If you come down, I can even arrange a behind the scenes tour of Grayson Stadium, home of the Sally League Savannah Sand Gnats.

I find it funny

that every city trumpets the fact that they have the 2nd biggest celebration. Every city is the 2nd biggest Mardi Gras next to New Orleans...seems it's so with St Pats too.

Wikipedia says Savannah's second for St. Pat's (link). Who else claims to be bigger?

Until I went last year, I thought Chicago had to be bigger than Savannah. But it just isn't.

I'm sure NY and Boston probably pitch their celebration that way.

I know in STL, the media always claims it's the largest Mardi Gras in the country outside of New Orleans, but I've seen that claim in other cities I've visited too.

It's pretty harmless...easy marketing for the community and people can believe that there's something special about where they live. No real way to tell whether or not the claim is true.

I'm not saying Savannah isn't the 2nd largest..just that I think it's a pretty common thing for smaller cities to claim.

Oh, and if wikipedia says it's true...it must be.

Raleigh, NC (claims 2nd in the southeast-now THAT's getting specific)
Pittsburgh, PA
Toronto

Many more claim to be the largest in their region and/or state.

It's just funny how important the size of a parade/party can be to a community. Smaller cities (St Louis included) tend to have an inferiority complex and are always trying to stake a claim on something.
