Kosuke to sign with Cubs.

Looks like Kosuke signed with the Cubs.  I don't know if the reports are correct, but whatever.  We all know that management will always make us a mediocre team geared to finish 2nd.  Thank you Sandy Alderson.  I love how the team marketed the offer to Fukudome as "The top 3 offers in Padres history."  Well... Padre contracts have never been hefty.

Fukudome
WGN Radio says 4 years, $50 million.

The only
Thing worse than losing out on him is having to hear it from all of the douch Cubs fans out there. God I hope this guy tanks.

by friarfanatic on Dec 11, 2007 7:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's harsh
Hope he tanks?  All you bandwagon fans were hoping he'd come here and now that he's not, there are going to be a bunch of you bashing him.  Grow up.  Is it his fault that the Padres are cheap douches who won't shell out money?

by 19 51 on Dec 11, 2007 7:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bandwagon fan?
Sure buddy.

I agree it's not his fault that the Pads are cheapos. But just as I want every player on every other team besides the Padres to tank, I hope he does too. It's only the nature of the game to hope that your teams players do great and everyone else blows.

Besides, just letting off some steam. Don't take things so seriously.

Wrong
The Pads made a fair offer - not the front office's fault that the Cubs overpaid for the guy.  And, yeah, they overpaid for him.

And, yeah, I hope he tanks, too.  Because I hate the Cubs.  A lot.

by Winfield's Ghost on Dec 11, 2007 8:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
I wanted him but thats a lot of money

by CurbEnthusiasm on Dec 11, 2007 8:13 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. Let the Cubs have him.
I really, really thought we were past this.

Most people understand that the way NOT TO SUCCEED as a small market team is to TRY TO OUTBID THE RICH TEAMS.  I think someone even wrote a kind of famous book about it.....

If the Yankees sign Carl Pavano to 4 years/40 million and he makes 12 starts in 4 years, it won't doom the franchise. They can eat the cost.  Were the Padres supposed to offer 4 years and 60 million for Fukudome? For a player who has never once had a major league at-bat???? That's insanity.  The Cubs were going to win in a straight money game.  The Padres aren't cheap. They're smart with limited resources.

This 'oh, the cheapo 2nd place front office' nonsense makes my head spin.  This is the same front office trying to lock up Peavy long term.  I completely trust them to allocate their resources effectively.  We lock 50 million up in 1 unproven guy, and that's 50 million less for scouting, minor league player development, signing bonuses, contract extensions for our core players, or free agents/trade possibilities for the next several years.

Fukudome signed with a team I hate.  I don't have to like him now.  The end.

by goose1 on Dec 11, 2007 9:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said
bandwagon... an hour ago a majority of you were treating him like the savior of the franchise. Quit treating him like the hot girl who suddenly became "ugly" when she rejected you when you asked her to prom

I didn't say root for him.
I mean, he's not Bonds or Schilling.  He hasn't done anything to deserve to be hated already.

I don't hate him
I just don't want him to do well

by CurbEnthusiasm on Dec 11, 2007 8:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Aye
I didn't say "I hope Jake hits him with a fastball and his elbow explodes and he can't play for the duration of his contract", I was basically saying, "F the stupid Cubs and other big market teams that make it difficult for mid-to-low revenue clubs to improve via the crappy free agent market.  I hope this contract blows up in their faces to teach them a lesson.  I am a bitter, bitter man."

wait...
What bandwagon am/was I on?  The Padres bandwagon, or the Fukudome bandwagon?  Definitely & proudly guilty of the latter, and I jumped off very recently.  I would love to be able to console myself in years 2 through 4 of that contract if he's a bust-- what is wrong with that exactly?

But if he's awesome, then I'll probably start sounding like someone on this board who is whining about "management's quest for mediocrity."

by Dalton on Dec 11, 2007 8:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Love the players
hate management.  I'm not looking to spend Yankee money.  I'm not asking to bust the bank at all.  I just can't accept the fact that management's goal is to be a profitable franchise, as opposed to a winning franchise.  Call me a whiner if you want.  Well love the players asides from Tremmel Sledge but I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Outfield.....
One of the posters at Ducksnorts said KT told the season ticket holders tonight that Antonelli will get some work in CF during the spring, they talked with Cam's agent tonight and that there were some possible trades put on hold until they heard Fukudome's decision.

Other than that...we're screwed as of right now.

Management's quest for mediocrity continues.

by 19 51 on Dec 11, 2007 8:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Trying to be rationale
If we were honestly hanging our hopes on a 30 yr old untested player from Japan, then we were already screwed to begin with.

I'm happy we didn't get into a bidding war for the guy - far too many unknowns to hang a bunch of cash on the guy.  And as I said at the end of the season, I'm happy to see the organization give some of the young guys in the minors a shot.  I know there are going to be growing pains, but at some point, it's going to have to happen.  I'd rather see that than see them fork over a bunch of cash on someone who isn't worth it.  At this pt, I'd rather see Venable/Antonelli/Whomever be given a shot than watch them overpay for Cameron.

I'm trying to be rational, not a rationale.

by Winfield's Ghost on Dec 11, 2007 8:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Just my opinion...
About developing young talent... I get the feeling this team really needs to win now while Peavy and Young are in their prime, and before Maddux decides to leave.  I'm not saying trade our talent.  Other than that, I don't know what the Padres need to do to juice the offense a bit to push them over the top.

by ABY on Dec 12, 2007 1:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm only half-serious
When I say we should sign Bonds.  But then again, part of me is serious about it.  Our OF is a disaster.

Patterson sucks hard, but maybe his agent knows that too and he'll sign an Iguchi deal if we really can't find anyone else.  Of course I'd rather trade for a McLouth/Willits/Gwynn Jr.

by Dalton on Dec 12, 2007 8:25 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

and that's presupposing
Cameron signs elsewhere.  Like every other free agent, ever.

by Dalton on Dec 12, 2007 8:28 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Free agency is a disaster for us lately
Even really average or unproven guys are already bid up out of our reach.  we wouldn't have been able to afford SCOTT LINEBRINK this offseason.

I know you're half joking about Bonds, and I'm half joking endorsing you...But I'll tell you this: I would sign an evil robot with Barry Bonds numbers. Or an alien. Or an evil alien-robot.

Taking what WG Said.
This is what happens when big payroll teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Giants, Dodgers completely overpay for ALL of their players. The drive the market up so high that only the big market teams can have the all-star players. It doesn't always work out for them though. The Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2000. The Cubs spent 300 Million dollars last offseason, barely snuck into the playoffs in the worst division in baseball, and got swept by a much much lower payroll team.

1951 Stop calling everyone and their mothers bandwagon fans. I know most of the people around hear and I can tell you that they are NOT bandwagon fans at all. You want to know why we want him to tank? First we hate the cubs, second we offer the guy one of the "two are three" highest contracts in Padre History and the Cubs sign him for pocket money. 4 Years 50 Million for a guy who has never seen a major league pitch and plays in little league fields? Well I'll say it right now. I hope he sucks too. I hate the Cubs and their Fans.

WG also said we got Iguchi. Thats awesome news. It also sounds like we are going to probably resign Cameron. Worst case scenario, Hairston was a freaking beast in LF last season if ya'll don't remember. I don't want to hear all these fatalist viewpoints. Kevin Towers is the best GM in baseball and I have full confidence that he will field a great team next season. Keep the faith and experience the offseason. ITS THE FRIAR BITCH!

Huh?
What does this have to do with sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is not gloating if you win or not making excuses and whining if you lose. If the Padres are playing the Cubs, I want everyone player on their team to tank. DUH. Wanting a player to do poorly that isn't on your team is being a FAN not a bad sport.

You go tell that to your kid when he/she is in some type of competition and there's someone out there who wants your kid to tank.  Just let that person yell at your kid and say he/she sucks... I hope you break your leg....you're doomed to fail.  You know... since wishing misfortune on someone isn't bad sportsmanship, yelling that stuff is okay.

Not so much.
Comedians and professional athletes realize that getting heckled is part of the gig. From the sounds of things
It wasn't about the money. Apparently the Rangers offered the most money, the White Sox matched the cubs, and the Padres were close. The guy just wanted to play for the Cubs. I find it harder to root against him anymore than any other Cub now that I know it wasn't totally about the money.

by osbug on Dec 12, 2007 8:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ooops
Forgot to say, maybe the guy just wasn't down for the prospect of playing CF in Petco Park. He could be smart enough to know his own limitations.

Regardless of what some people think, I don't think this was about management wanting to put a mediocre team on the field.

by osbug on Dec 12, 2007 9:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Rangers...
Yeah, you do have to respect the guy for being smart enough to turn down a little more money so he won't be stuck playing for a horrible Rangers team, in the 110 degree heat, in a dump like Arlington.

Just Thought of Something Else
I was reading an article about how the Cubs are planning to market Fukudome.

One of the points was that the Yanks are able to successfully market having Matsui because a lot (if not all) of their home games are broadcast back to Japan, hence allowing them to sell advertising space in the ballpark to Japanese corporations.

This is similar to what the Cubs are apparently planning on doing via WGN, and having their signal broadcase VIA SATELLITE back to Japan.

Which leads me to my point.... I think the Cox Channel 4 deal has tied the Padres hands yet again.  Perhaps if the team knew they could've brought in some revenue with this sort of advertising, they would've been more willing to offer more than the reported 4 years $40 Million.

BUT, since Cox WILL NOT broadcast their signal via satellite AT ALL, this is impossible to do.

I don't know, maybe it's a shot in the dark, but when it comes down to dollars (especially in a big deal), you gotta figure that teams look at a player's impact not only from a performance standpoint on the field, but also his marketability and their ability to recoup some of their investment.

Even though many of us lose sight of it quite often, baseball is a business just like your neighborhood grocery store, gas station, restaurant, etc.  Owners want to make money, and they're always looking to have the biggest ROI(return on investment).
