Randy Wolf signs with the Padres, anticipates getting urinated on

Randy Wolf is a Padre. I am extremely indifferent to this signing. On the one hand, there's a lot of upside to a Randy Wolf. On the other hand, the reason there's a lot of upside is because it's 2 to 1 that his arm literally falls out of its socket this year.

Is there any real reason for me to be excited by this? Coming back from Tommy John surgery is one thing as it makes the arm stronger (Elliott received elective Tommy John about 10 minutes after birth). Having shoulder surgery is another ball of wax altogether. But heck... Towers can spot pitchers like I can spot a deal on hand sanitizer, so I guess we'll wait and see how this works out.

We should totally bring the Wolf pack back...Padre fans can do better than Woodys workshop, even if we are "borrowing" it from the Phillies.

Good luck and good health to Randy Wolf. He's been good in between DL stints. Now pick up the phone-call the Cardinals and see which minor league pitcher they'll take for Anthony Reyes. He could be had on the cheap, and I think Petco park would be the perfect place for him to pitch. I know he had a bad year that's why we can get him. But he is the Padres kind of pitcher and I believe he will thrive here. Please, Kevin. It's a low risk/high reward kind of move. It will cost almost nothing in money/prospects. Do it, Kevin.

we both believe that colon prior clement and garcia would all be good options and wolf just seems like the least amount of upside out of all these injury prone pitchers. i still hope that we can get colon and prior.

You guys are a little crazy

Prior definitely has more upside, but his downside is that his arm literally explodes out of the socket and takes a couple bat boys with it. Clement's downside is that he's psycho.

Bartolo Colon though would be fun to have. I like chubby people.

Crazy like a fox

I like this move, actually. Sure, his upside isn't huge, but KT might not be done, and the Pads might still sign Prior/Colon/Clement for the 5th spot. Its relatively low cost and we didn't do anything stupid to get him. I get a little itchy about some of the trade talk surrounding Headley, so signing someone like Wolf for $5m plus incentives, especially when jokers like Lohse or Silva will get twice that, is a solid move.

Jim Edmonds will waive his no trade clause for a SoCal team only. The Padres are interested. This guy has an amazing offer for us.

"This year is getting more and more interesting with our new GM Mozeliak. Building a young team, I didn't think I would see this for years to come. Edmonds for Chris Young sounds very interesting to me. Especially if the Cards throw cash at San Diego."

I like this signing

It's all about context: The pitching market is abysmal.

There are guys who have never pitched as well as Wolf who will get 2 or 3 times what we're paying him. It's a low risk/high upside move for a 4/5 starter and you cannot get worse than some of the garbage we threw out in that spot last year.

Someone else--i think over at Friar Forecast--pointed out that Wolf's peripherals are decent--good strikeouts, not terrible on the walks and HRs. And our park will help him.

As for the injury 'factor'--it's not like it's going to blindside anyone. If he makes half his starts, and Prior makes the other half, the two of them make a better #4 than we had most of the year.

Plus this is a sport where Kaz Matsui and Scott Linebrink just got multi-year, 20 millionish deals. I'll take flawed and cheap with high upside over flawed and expensive and below average.
