Mike Cameron tests positive for stimulant

Sports Illustrated:

"The one thing I wanted to make sure was explained is, no steroids," Cameron told AM 1090, the Padres' flagship radio station. "I never took nothing like that before in my life. That would be 50 games, and that would affect me a whole lot more."

Ok, we'll let's just test the supplement and see if that...

"After all of the analysis and testing, I can only conclude that a nutritional supplement I was taking was tainted," he said `Unfortunately, the actual supplement is gone, and therefore cannot be tested. Without the actual supplement in hand, the rules are clear, and I must accept the suspension.

So convenient Mike Cameron.  So convenient that you finished up that supplement full of stimulant.

It's amazing to me that professional athletes take supplements when they aren't sure what's in them.  Who taints a supplement anyway?  In the supplement factory was someone walking by the supplement vat carrying a big jar of stimulant and trip?

Maybe every team should have their own chemist who analyzes all supplements and proclaims them clean.  So this can't be used as an excuse anymore.

I didn't really want Mike Cameron back before this, but now I'm thinking we might be able to sign him for really cheap.  We could slip him a mickey and have him sign a bad contract, since we know he isn't aware of what's being put in his drink.

Such a bunch of crap
This is the second failed test for him and he STILL goes for the "tainted supplement" excuse?  What a phony sack of crap.

Goodbye, Mike Cameron.  I will miss your defensive prowess in centerfield, but I will not miss all those called third strikes and your lying mouth.

Positive
By rules, they don't publish the first positive test and the player gets mandatory counseling.  They don't get suspended until the 2nd positive test.

He definitely put an end
to any biddding war he might be hoping to see this off season in the rush to grab up all the good CFers.  He'll be a bargain, fo'shore.  So disappointing, though.

Ouch
So, do the Padres offer him arbitration so they might be able to grab a draft pick?

Stimulant rule is BS in MLB
seriously, I know I would fail, drinking Monster Energy Drink will get you a failed test, (Taurine in high levels will show up as ephadrine in a urine test) but it not on the ban substance list.

Also GNC creatine mix (not the pure one, but the Myoplex bran one), had some stimulants in it, and once a bunch of players tested positive-MLB had to amend the "banned" list.

MLB and NFL needs to start providing the the supplements that the players can use.  This whole "list" that changes every few weaks is not working.  I just have a hard time for getting on someone for failing a test from items you can buy in Ralphs (and take as directed), but they can't test for directly injected hormones or other illegal steroids.

Good point
I was about to go off on "there is no excuse for this" based on the idea that they have a list of the banned substances and they damn sure better be checking the ingredients in anything they use based on that.
However, I had no idea that the energy drinks could cause a failed test. You make a great point about punishing them for using common drinks/supplements that anyone can get at the grocery store. I do believe that if players are going to lose salary and reputation over this, then the rules do need to be crystal clear. An approved list of things would be a great idea.
Still - I am disappointed in Cameron.

Ok, but...
if it was just an over the counter supplement that he was using then you could just go to Ralphs pick up the one he used and test it and say "yes here's the problem", but he's claiming that his supplement was tainted and now there is no way to test it.

Exactly
I have a hard time believing it was an over the counter supplement - because he could just say that and explain exactly what it was he took.

He's full of crap.

Almost as good / bad of an excuse as...
it was my friend's / some guy I don't know's bag of pot / coke.  They left it in my car / jacket / backpack / pocket.

My brother is a cop
and he got that one last night.  Cracks me up. It's not my pot officer.  Don't know how that got there.
