Kurkijian thinks Brandon Webb is better than Peavy

Tim Kurkjian gives a preview of the NLCS:

How good is D-backs starter Brandon Webb?
He is the best pitcher in this series and has been the best pitcher in the National League over the past two years.

It's a good thing I am not drinking Elk Semen right now because I would have done a spit take after reading that. Hello? Jake Peavy?

I think he means it as an average. Over the past two years, the average Webb performance has been better than the average Peavy performance. Peavy was marginally better than Webb this year, and Webb was considerably better than Peavy in 2006 due to Peavy's inconsistency.

Also, Webb has only had one postseason start in his career, but it was a lot better than any Peavy postseason start (or play-in game start!) to date.

I'd still rather have Peavy, but you have to tip your cap to Webb until Peavy continues to step it up and actually follows through in the postseason.

peavy is good

but Webb is the better pitcher if you take the sum of two years. I think Jake will win the Cy and deserves it, but it is not as much a 'no brainer' as most Padre fans think it is.

Especially come playoff time, IP can be a huge stat to lean on and Peavy just doesn't go deep into games. His stuff is nasty though

But Peavy for Cy Young is a no brainer. There hasn't been a pitching Triple Crown winner that didn't win the Cy Young. It would be precedent if Peavy didn't get it hands down this season.

HAS to be Jake. Best NL pitcher over 2 years... Well, Webb won it last year and had a better season this year... I don't have a problem w/ that statement.

park effects

Peavy was the better pitcher this year, but it's not as much of a slam dunk as people think. PETCO's park factor is a crazy .80 -- that's like Coors for pitchers. Arizona's at about 1.10. I love Peavy, though.

Just because triple crown numbers are so impressive by themselves. If somebody looks at the splits, it's not like Jake totally leaned on his home numbers anyway.

Home/Road

I don't think anyone could try and use PETCO as justification for not voting for Peavy unless they just flat out don't want him to win. His numbers were much better on the road. Except for the one blowup in Arizona, he was undefeated. Take into account that Webb relied more on his defense than Peavy, and it would be a crime not to give the CY to Jake.

Come on, really? Even if you are a homer for Webb and the Dbacks, Peavy won the National League Triple Crown. That, almost by default, makes him the premier pitcher in the National League.

Come on dude,

If you're gonna spout random things like that, at least check the stats first:

Home: 19 GS, 9-5, 125.1 IP, 100 H, 35 ER, 34 BB, 139 K, 2.51 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, .218 BAA

Away: 15 GS, 10-1, 98.0 IP, 69 H, 28 ER, 34 BB, 101 K, 2.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, .195 BAA

W-L is much better, but even throwing out a misleading stat like that, look at the WHIP and BAA, and tell me Petco had a big effect. He had the same number of walks on the road as at home, but the WHIP was still lower, which of course means he gave up much fewer hits on the road too. As for HRs, if you want to assign Jake's road HR/IP to his home IP, he would have given up 10.23 HR at home instead of 5. If you factor those additional 5.23 ER into his ERA, his home ERA sits at 2.88, and overall ERA at 2.75, still .26 better than Webb's.

I don't disagree with what Kurkjian said one bit, I think he's exactly right, especially when you factor in the big game situations, but I find it hard to make a really convincing case for Webb to win the Cy Young this season.

Here are their ERA+ for the past two seasons:

Peavy: 103, 164
Webb: 154, 156

That's one decent year and one dominant year for Peavy versus two dominant years for Webb.

Rockies have owned him ALL YEAR.

Webb this year has an ERA below 2.5 against the rest of MLB, along with the most IP. He pitches in any other division and he beats out Jake for the Cy, only because he has to face the Rockies only once or twice. That adds to his win total as well.

...Before anyone tries to start something, note that I've advocated for Jake to win the Cy on both this site and the Snakepit.
