We've already talked about the ballparks we've bagged as Padres fans.  Now what games have you attended that were important in franchise history.  I'll leave it up to you to judge how important they are.

Here's mine:

  • 1996 Last game of the season, Padres beat the Dodgers in LA to win the NL West

  • 1998 NLDS:  Sterling Hitchcock beats Randy Johnson.  Padres headed to NLCS.

  • 2001 Tony Gwynn's last game (Rickey's 3000th hit)

  • 2001 Rickey Henderson breaks Babe Ruth's walk record

  • 2003 Last Game at Qualcomm Stadium

  • 2004 First Game at Petco Park

  • 2006 Peavy breaks the Padres single game strike out record
  • 2006 Mike Piazza's 400th Home Run
  • 2006 Trevor tying the All Time Saves Record

I was also at the game
where Ashby threw only 75 pitches in a complete game to beat the Diamondbacks.  Was that a Padres record?

by jbox on Jan 19, 2007 9:54 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was at that game, too.
(1998-07-05) Except it was against the Rockies. ;) I'm pretty sure it's a Padres record.

(1993-08-06) I also was at The Gwynn's 2000th hit game later mentioned, which was the second game of a double header also against the Rockies. Apparently Trevor got the third save of his career (and his first as a Padre!) in the first game.

Good call
You're right good call.

Er...
Trevor breaking the all time saves record doesn't count?

by ABY on Jan 19, 2007 11:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

It does count
but I wasn't there.  I saw him tie the record, I guess I could put that up.

by jbox on Jan 19, 2007 11:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

count
I was at both the tie and the "break" <oi grammer>, can we put it up now.

What about the return of the SD chicken kicking the reds bullpen's anaheims!?  Not the right category I guess...

Oh
I made my personal list.  You are supposed to put your personal list here in the comments.  Kinda like we did for the ballpark one.

Uh-oh
I ruined it!  Sorry, and now everyone is following my lead...  baaaa!

Here is my list:

*   2006 (Sept 24) Trevor breaking the all time saves record - sat overlooking the bullpen and watched him warm-up, cool as a cucumber...

As it - whadya want, I just got here!!  :)

I have your last three
My moments are only at Petco since I could barely attend games until then.

Adding to your last three, I saw Trevor's record breaking save game as well. And, well, these FELT like history - or the brink of it anyway, but I saw both of CY's near misses for a no-hitter. And on a personal player history note - I was there for Piazza's 400th career home run.

Oh yeah
I was there for the 400th home run also.

One in mind
In addition to some mentioned by jbox...

In Anaheim where Reggie Sanders threw a bucket of gum onto the field after getting kicked out of the game, and Ruben Rivera hit a go ahead / game winning HR over the LF fence in the top of the 9th.  I guess that's not historic, but it will always stick out to me for those two reasons.

Although I've tried to erase the memory, I was also at Burnitt's no hitter against us where he - ugh - walked 9 and hit a batter.

Trevor's Record Breaking
I was on the HoF Bar&Grill balcony helping the Pad Squad change the signage to say "A NEW RECORD"
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I wish I had a picture of that
the Pad Squad and RevRun changing the number.  It'd be like the Flag Raising on Iwo Jima.

Gwynn
I saw gwynn get hit 2000.  Ever since then they often lose when I go.  And now SD teams are 0-9 in the playoffs when I'm there.  Nothing ever happens when I'm there.  I have been to every opening day for the last 10 years.

Games I've bag'd ... '69 & '84 ...
1969 ... Game #1 in Padres history ... I was 10 years old ... so I don't remember it ... buy my Dad says we went, so it's on my list

1984 ... NLCS Game #4 and Game #5 ... sure wish I'd been at Game #3, but I wasn't ... I scalped tix for these games at the top of the hill (intersection of Ruffin Rd & Mission Village Dr) ... I think we got tix for about $35 each ... it was hard to get a Game4 ticket ... but then easy for Game5, as many folks were very burned out by Game4 and just didn't have the strength to go to the next level!  Lots of "cub-busters" to & from those games :-)

Non-Home Games ...
I've probably been to more Padre games at Candlestick Park than anywhere else ... 3 games stand out ... this double-header ...

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B05301SFN1977.htm
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B05302SFN1977.htm

... where Mike Ivie had 5 doubles ... dude was on fire!

And this one where Dave Winfield hit a Grand Slam off John Montefusco with nobody out in the top of the 1st inning ...

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B07040SFN1978.htm

... bang! :-)

Sorta bag'd ...
My other favorite memory of Padres' franchise history was the day Nate Colbert hit 5 HRs in a DH ... Nate's from St. Louis ... and I was at Busch Stadium that day ... (Padres were playing @ Atlanta, the "launching pad" that was Fulton Co Stadium) ... Nate's feats got lots of run on the Cardinal's scoreboard, but the game I was at ended with Nate @ 4 HR's ... but the lead story on the News that night was Nate's 5th HR ... and it got several good / long articles in the Post-Democrat news papers in the days that followed.

Post-Dispatch ...
Not that anyone else cares, but in the interest of accuracy, the St. Louis newspaper is the Post-Dispatch ... also, here's a few cool links about Nate and his day ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nate_Colbert ... a solid widipedia entry :-)

http://www.seth.com/coll_histbseballs_18.html ... a photo of the 5th HR ball!

84 and 98
Saw NLCS Games 3 and 4 in '84 - the guy my dad shared season tix with got Game 5.  Game 4 is still the best sporting event I've ever seen in person.  Saw Game 1 of WS - and they lost.  I had no perspective as a 14 yr old - I cried afterwards - but now it seems cool that I was at the first ever WS game played in SD.

Saw NLCS Game 3 in '98.  (Saw Game 4 but since they lost, I refuse to count that as "important.")

by Winfield's Ghost on Jan 19, 2007 4:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

ive been to
game 4 of the 98 NLCS against the braves, game 4 of the 98 WS :( and the sterling hitchcock vs. astros game in the first NLDS that year too.

but the game that sticks out so much in my mind as so memorable to me that year was the night they clinched the NLWEST. it was on sept 12th against the dodgers on a saturday night. we fell down 0 to 7 in the fifth, got a few runs in the bottom of the fifth and then in the bottom of the 6th the magic happened. the fans went absolutly nuts, as loud as any playoff game i had been to. they basically walked 5 i think in the inning and sheets got hit by a pitch, and we came back to win 8-7 and clinch the west. it was a crazy game the crowd really had an infuence and was getting in the pitchers heads.

heres the box score

threepeat?(never thought id be able to say that about the padres!)

I think I might have been there for that
but I can't say for sure.  It's either my memory from watching it on TV or from being there.  That was a great game.

I caught a few more of the Playoff games but I just remember how loud it was during the Houston game.  There was so much tension and the fans were going crazy with every pitch.

first post
The most famous Padred event I ever personally witnessed was Rosanne Barr's Star Spangled Banner.  Even the President commented on that one.

Woah
That's a really good one. That'd be a saved stub for sure.

Jeez....
Sorry, mine are very lame compared to all the awesome ones posted above. I haven't been a fan of baseball until a couple of years ago:
  1. First ever postseason game at PETCO
  2. Trevor breaking the saves record
I would have loved to watch the Rosanne Barr incident.  Good times.....

Hammerin Hank
The only game I've been to in SD was when I was about 7 years old (early 70s), Hank Aaron came up with the bases loaded and hit one off the left field wall.  It turned out to be a single and all runners moved up only one base.  We sat in the left field bleachers and there was this drunk japanese guy with a drum yelling and bangin the drum the whole game.  My dad told me he was the team mascot, of course later I figured out he was a drunk.  Fun was had by all.

Late rally in April '79
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SDN/SDN197904180.shtml

Why do we remember certain games?  This is one that I do.  I was there with a friend (we were in HS), sitting in 3B Field (although we only paid for GA!)

2 out, none on, down by 2 in the bottom of ninth.  The rally was kept going by an E6 to Johnnie LeMaster.  I'll never forget it --- grounder right through his legs!  Also, this was a game during an umps strike, so they had replacements.

Other (more important games):
Last at the Murph
First at Petco
The playoff game in '96 (loss)
Trevor's tie and break saves
CY's near no-hitter
I also saw Aaron it #'s 706 & 707 (or there about) in Sept '73
And AJ Burnett's no-no (ugh!)

kinda late to the thread
but better late than never!

-last game at the Q
-Tony's last game, which was also when Rickey got his 3,000th hit
-the 16 inning game vs Pittsburgh in 1996 (or 98?)
-the game where Klesko hit the walk-off homer against Arizona in the first homestand at Petco
-the division clincher in 2005 (personal favorite)
-Trevor's record breaking game
-first two postseason games in Petco
-the game against Seattle where eight homers were hit (Petco record)
-the game(s) last season where we completed the sweep of LA (both at home and at Dodger Stadium)
--the game at Dodger Stadium was also the game where Jake Peavy hit a home run
-the day we beat St Louis in 2005 that ended a eight-game losing streak (it felt like the first win ever)
-Ollie Perez's major league debut
-Ben Johnson's first big league home run
-the game where Phil Nevin pointed up at KT's box
-the game where Phil Nevin complained about Jeff Francis, and what prompted the team to build the additions to the batter's eye

The last few probably aren't too important in terms of franchise history, but they were memorable nonetheless.

20 inning game ...
Your entry reminded me of a game I went to in 1980 ... http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B08150SDN1980.htm ... 20 innings ... lost on a Jerry Mumphrey ... I liked Mumphrey ... but that one hurt ... that was a lot of 0's to sit thru only to lose on an E ...

Rickey's 3000th
I forgot that was the same game.  Man all the games run together.

September 1984
New Gaslampballer, old Padres fan.

I was at the afternoon game against the Giants in September 84 when the 'dres clinched the division title.  There wasn't that much drama, since they had about a 12 game lead for the division, but we did cut high school to be there, and that was cool.  I remember nothing of the game itself.
