Pirates recall Gorzelanny, activate Capps

Sports Network | August 23, 2008

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny from the minors and have activated closer Matt Capps off the 15-day disabled list.

Gorzelanny was sent back to Triple-A Indianapolis after a July 4 start against Milwaukee and his return to the rotation on Saturday will come against the Brewers.

In 17 starts with the Pirates before the demotion, Gorzelanny had a record of just 6-7 with a lofty 6.57 earned run average. His final start against the Brewers resulted in a loss after he was tagged for eight runs -- seven earned -- on 11 hits in just 4 2/3 innings.

The 25-year-old left-hander appeared to regain his form of 2007 -- when he was 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA in 32 starts with the Pirates -- at Indianapolis, posting a mark of 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA in seven starts. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his last outing on August 16.

Capps, meanwhile, was also at Indianapolis, Double-A Altoona and the Gulf Coast Pirates while rehabbing his right shoulder. He was diagnosed with bursitis in early July.

In six rehab outings, Capps surrendered just one unearned run on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

The 24-year-old right-hander, entering Saturday's play, has a record of 2-3 with 17 saves and 3.12 ERA in 37 games with the Pirates this season.

To open a roster spot for Capps, the Pirates optioned pitcher Romulo Sanchez to Indianapolis. Sanchez has appeared in five games for Pittsburgh this season, and has one save with a 3.52 ERA and no record.

The Pirates have yet to make a corresponding roster move for Gorzelanny.
