The Padres still could use some additions but the season begins in a matter of days

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in San Diego Padres fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Gaslamp Ball community was asked earlier this week (before the Dylan Cease acquisition) if they approved of A.J. Preller’s offseason. The results are here...

The timing of this survey wasn’t the best because since it was published on Tuesday, Preller decided to make the biggest acquisition of his offseason. Perhaps the fan base still would vote the same due to the perceived hole in left field and some other question marks depth-wise but there’s no doubt Cease makes this rotation better.

The 28-year-old should allow the Padres to exhale a little bit about how they were going to fill innings in 2024. One starting pitcher eclipsed 165 innings last season in San Diego’s rotation and that guy (Blake Snell) isn’t on the team anymore.

Cease has reached at least 165 innings in each of his last three seasons and if his recent track record is an indicator, he’s going to take the hill 30 times in a pitcher-friendly ballpark.

“Last year wasn’t good,” Cease told Jeff Sanders on his first day in the brown and gold yesterday. “I think I pitched to about 30 percent of my potential, really.”

“I just wasn’t executing well. I didn’t get into a good rhythm…I feel like I’m in a good spot right now. I feel like I’m locked in. I made some good adjustments. I mean, I’ve got a good feel right now. I’ve got a good command of everything. So honestly, just keep building on what I’ve been doing.”

Sounds encouraging. Let’s hope 2022 Cease is the version the Padres get the next two years.

What is a Spring Breakout game?

The Padres big league squad is in South Korea right now but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t supposed to be fun action going on in Peoria.

For the first time MLB is putting on their Spring Breakout series, which is a showcase of all the game’s best young talent. Think of this individual exhibition as the Futures Game but between two teams in their respective matchups.

There are other great matchups around the league during this four-day period, such as Jackson Holliday and the Baltimore Orioles vs. Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates, which happened last night in Florida.

The Padres roster for this canceled game was changed since it was initially announced. I don’t know if you heard but A.J. Preller acquired Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox, which meant he was going to have to give up some of his Spring Breakout game talent. Jairo Iriarte, Samuel Zavala, and Drew Thorpe went to Chicago so they weren’t going to be in this game anyway but Ethan Salas, Dillon Head, Homer Bush Jr., Jakob Marsee, Adam Mazur, Robby Snelling and Dylan Lesko headlined what was still a pretty stacked roster.

A long flight has been taken but there are still some cuts to be made

The San Diego Padres left for Korea a couple days ago and have completed their first on-field workout in Seoul. Last night (San Diego time), the Padres announced all of the players that traveled to South Korea:

Padres 31-man travel roster for the #SeoulSeries pic.twitter.com/K8cxg4KFdG
— PadresPR (@PadresPR) March 15, 2024

Dylan Cease didn’t fly with the team but he is probably on his flight to join the team right now.

Oscar Mercado is the one player that stands out who didn’t make the flight. The Padres seemed to view him and Jose Azocar as similar bench outfielders so why carry both when Brett Sullivan, Tyler Wade and Graham Pauley could play the outfield in an emergency situation?

This roster has to get down to 26 players by March 20 (Opening Day) so A.J. Preller, Mike Shildt and the staff will have to make five cuts combined among the following players:

Pitchers

Pedro Avila, Jhony Brito, Jeremiah Estrada, Stephen Kolek, Adrian Morejon, Randy Vasquez, Matt Waldron

Position Players

Brett Sullivan, Graham Pauley, Eguy Rosario and Tyler Wade

Just because any of these players don’t make the final Seoul Series roster doesn’t mean they won’t make the Home Opener roster. This roster is probably being treated like a postseason series where they’ll have the 26-man roster include the entire rotation when the team gets back to San Diego.

Which players do you think the Padres are going to go with for these two games?

A.J. Preller loves to makes splashes and this is another one

The San Diego Padres had questions going into their season about how they were going to get enough innings from their rotation. Dylan Cease should help ease those concerns, as he’s on his way to the Padres from the Chicago White Sox, according to various reporters.

The Padres plane for South Korea is scheduled to leave tonight so who knows what the plan is for Cease in the near future.

Along with Steven Wilson, pitching prospects Drew Thorpe and Jairo Iriarte and outfield prospect Samuel Zavala are headed to Chicago, which hurts to see because of how talented they are but this is Dylan Cease that we’re talking about here (just like Juan Soto was Juan Soto that we were talking about in 2022). San Diego has publicly been telling the fans they’re still trying to compete for a championship and this move should help fans buy in to what’s going on.

They needed starts and innings and Cease certainly will provide that if we’re looking at track record. The former Cy Young runner-up has made 30+ starts in each of his last three seasons, throwing 526 innings in that span. For comparison, Blake Snell threw 436.2 innings over his three years in a Padres uniform.

There are still some holes on the roster but this should help the Padres chances significantly at making the postseason and then going on a run if they get there. Usually teams that go on a run have three starting pitchers to roll out there in a seven game series and the Padres on paper can check that box.

You could’ve said that still with Michael King but there’s still uncertainty about how he will do as a full-time starter. The talent is definitely there though.

Matt Waldron had performed well in Cactus League play but was he going to do that the entire season? And how would the other young starters do in their first year as a Padre?

Now Mike Shildt can line up Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove and Dylan Cease at the top and hope to get some strong performances from the other 2/5 of their rotation.

It feels more like a postseason team than it did a few hours ago.

How do you feel about this move Padres fans?
