TBS fails badly in First National Telecast

I wasn't home until the final 3 innings. I do have tape (I'm still analog) of the game -- but from what I saw -- TBS' coverage was miserable. This is what MLB paid for?

Think about this -- that play at the plate was one of the most important ones of this season, on a 'national' telecast. Yet, we saw 2 -- only 2 replays. Just two angles. One, was the 'cover' shot of the main action, and the other --  a shot looking down the 3B line toward HP, from what -- I assume was an outfield camera. As much as we (myself included) have bashed Fox -- wouldn't we have seen multiple camera angles on a Fox telecast, including a shot from a HP camera? (If one was used in this final sequence, I don't remember, and my tape clicked off about 10 mins before the game ended) Also, with suspending a small camera on a line above third base, Fox uses 'super slo-mo' as a part of its' coverage. That might have helped us tell if Holliday's hand actually touched HP.) From the camera looking down the 3B line, his hand didn't seem to touch the plate. But this replay would have been rejected by an NFL referee --  as 'inconclusive.'

Combined with barely adequate pbp, (I'm sorry, I've forgotten the guy's name, but his work was not memorable) and what appeared to be Joe Simpson sleepwalking through his role as (un)color (ful) analyst -- This might have been the worst national telecast I've ever seen in years.
I can only assume this was done on the cheap. Was TBS not ready for this 'special' telecast? I'd guess they were not.

We've busted Fox's chops for the constant sound effects, "talking baseballs," a barrage of promos during game action -- but you know what? I'm sure that network would have had a more definitive camera shot as that game came to its' conclusion.

And -- In studio, in the aftermath,  Ernie Johnson and Cal Ripkin glossed over the controversy -- a play which is sure to be discussed over, and over and over, on other outlets and in the papers. Was TBS protecting the umpires? Was TBS not wanting to offend MLB in their very first national telecast? Whatever the reason -- this was very uncompelling television, and the non-discussion of the play, obviously -- gives us the answer.

This mess is from the same company which is not afraid to let Charles Barkley say whatever the hell he wants on TNT/NBA coverage? But here, on MLB coverage...it meekly tip-toes away from what looks to be a terrible call? What a pitiful mess.

An "F" to TBS and their first national game.

(Braves baseball doesn't count, since there was still a home bias to those telecasts, as would be found on a Cubs/White Sox telecast on WGN)

TBS better improve -- in a hurry.

TBS Broadcast
It's almost like they've been watching the problems that ESPN and MLB have had lately and were trying to do their best not to offend anybody at all. The extra bumpers between innings could have been really good in a "halftime roundup" sort of way, but just ended up feeling tacked on. Just stick Cal in the booth next time.

Looks it was quickly put together
All due respect to Cal Ripken, but, he skirted the call issues both times. Is there some HOF rule that says you aren't allowed to go there?

Oh, and I still believe he never touched home plate.

Notice that with the context of what
happened with Milton Bradley, and Sandy's ex relationship, and maybe if you were in touch with a San Diego beat writer, you could have easily placed the blown calls into proper context and someone like Fox could have easily made a compelling story.

As it was, I agree, TBS coverage was lame.

And instead of creating compelling arguments for blown calls, instead they go to some fat lady Rockies fan for verification.  Horrible.

The same lady, by the way,
who got to move all the way up to the fence because she was in a wheelchair. However, when the reporter came to talk to her, she was up and moving pretty well.

Heh
Even setting aside her team allegiance, that sure says a lot about her reliability as a source of information.

I thought Dex was gonna be quick to BAN
What the hell is SMJ doing back?

Prepared to gloat that her Cubbies are in the playoffs (albeit, temporarily)?

PS - I agree..TBS sucked...so did the dog owner and the fattie in the wheelchair who hopped out super fast when the ball was coming her way.

This was a critique of a network
presentation that included the Padres. I thought there might be some agreement. I have no intention to bring up any other topics whatsoever.

Of course
what would we ever do with out your brilliant analysis of the TBS broadcast....never coulda figured out on our own that it sucked.

Thank GOD that SJM came back to enlighten us that TBS has sub-par coverage.

Please, don't waste our time.

Um...
Then you should have started the diary. Apparently, you forgot to. Must have been an oversight on your part. Obviously, you'll be quick to correct that next time.
