Not a whole lot else to say. Good luck, Colorado. Have fun in the post season.

I'll save my Trevor Hoffman Needs to Retire post for another night. If you're a non-Padres fan and you're thinking about trolling, just know that the Ban Button is coming down quick and without mercy.

Go Padres!

Hoffman was the third rail
that Black wouldn't touch.  shenanigans shenanigans...I'm calling shenanigans.

by planetjeffy on Oct 1, 2007 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Black did well enough...
He made one mistake... Peavy should have been out earlier.  5th inning or 4th inning.  He was getting lit up every inning.

Pitch Bell until he passes out
Then continue with what he did...
But Trevor should have done better.  He let us down.  He didn't have his good 3rd strike change up going.

You're kidding, right?
I hope you're kidding.

You're calling for the retirement of Hoffman because he blew the save? If you weren't already calling for his retirement, then that seems stupid to decide that based on one game.

And Black? Please make it more evident why he needs to be fired. I thought he did a fine job all around this year, minus some micromanagement issues that you can quibble with almost any manager about.

by Brad @ Gaslamp Ball on Oct 1, 2007 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

2 Major Disagreements:
2 & 3.  Black did a fine job this year and Cameron is going to command more years and money than he's worth.

1 Minor Disagreement: Hoffman shouldn't retire, but he should be removed from his post as highest leveraged reliever on the team.

by Richard Wade on Oct 1, 2007 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Three.
Bud, Mike and Scotty in the place of Milt is about as serious as a non-playoff crowd gets.

by TheThirdGonzalez on Oct 1, 2007 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

sigh...
I find it ironic that are two marquee pitchers really performed poorly...

Huge props to our relievers for the whole year.  I think... I think I would have taken Hoffman out after the second hit.

sigh...

honestly, the game isn't over... bottom of the 13th, 2 outs, 8-8...  we'll finish the game next year.

by Zen Blade on Oct 1, 2007 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

If we were going to lose that game
it was going to have to be lost by Trevor Hoffman.  And it was.

The bells tolling tonight were for Hoffman's career as a Closer, not for the Rox.

Dear SnakePit,

With the exception of a couple of people that no longer post here on GLB, we have not trolled your site. We all know you think you are real fucking cool by posting on somebody else's site and starting internet "fights", but what you are really doing is messing up the atmosphere for people that come here to enjoy GLB and the Padres. So next season, act like you collectively have a little class (even though we all know none of you do) and stay on your own site for your own team.

Regards, a hearty fuck off, and best wishes for a Chicago sweep,

but I might as well with this comment...

San Diego sports has been one long 29 year let down.  I feel like I'm some crazy Cubs or Red Sox fan and I shouldn't be...its just sports...but come on, for once, someone be clutch when it matters...

like Trevor, like Peavy to name a few.

The guys are awesome pitchers, but when it mattered most, they faltered.

Here's to next year, Jake picking up where he left off (minus this start)...and Trevor retiring.

I am so angry right now
i want to throw up.

Holliday NEVER touched the plate. That umpire knew he didn't touch the plate, which is why he delayed the call. That POS ump wanted to go home after 13 innings, that's why he finally called safe.

This is such horsecrap, I want to break something.

by RBS on Oct 1, 2007 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

You're right...the ump
knew he was safe...I just knew it.

But it doesn't matter, we blew the game, we blew the season. The baseball gods gave us our chance to win this game.

At some point, you have to look at the stranded runners, the poor starting pitching performance, the missed chances.  But yeah, the umps sucked too.  That umps strike zone was ridiculous and Peavy did not get the calls he needed to jump ahead of batters.

by bktabinga on Oct 1, 2007 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Philip Fitzsimmons,Aug. 16,1969-Oct. 2,2007,RIP
Gaslamp Ball icon Philip "Irish" Fitzsimmons died of a fatal heart attack immediately after his beloved Padres lost to Colorado a few minutes ago. He was 38 years old. Fitzsimmons, known for his dreams of being a Padres player, with his "What if" scenarios in GLB,will be remembered as an Irishman who loved the Padres, drinking Guinness and loving life. Unfortunately,Fitzy died when Matt Holliday scored the winning run in the 13th inning of the National League wild card tiebreaker. If you want to send your thoughts, condolences and prayers to the Fitzsimmons family, please do so now. There is hope that Fitzsimmons may return soon, born again, possibly doing his 2006 Padres replay for GLB,a season that the Padres did go to the postseason. But we are saddened to say that Philip Francis "Irish" Fitzsimmons has passed away a half hour ago at the young age of 38.

You have to cut the Padres a break... yes we can blame Trevor who was up and down 3 times in 3 inning.. yes we can blame a spotty bullpen on Sunday....Yes we can blame the lack of bats...  But why don't we blame who's really at fault.. L.A.

what else can be said??
I think Bud Black did a great job with the team this year.  Considering he was a first year manager, and that the team should be on it's way to Phillie.

I have to much rage to think soundly about hoffman, but Bell earned his spot as closer next year.  Unbelievable outing by Bell, Brocail, and Thatcher.  I would not have a problem with these guys as our 7th, 8th , 9th pitchers next year.

Hairston, incredible month!! I hope to see you starting in left next year! Imagine what he could do over the course of a season.

Anyways, I know i don't post a whole lot, but i've enjoyed reading all of your comments throughout the year...  see you all in '08!

this game just completely REAFFIRMED
why rivera is so much better than hoffman. in those clutch situations when LITERALLY everything is on the line he comes thru. not hoffman tho. his two final appearances, when he was given the lead and a win would have clinched the wildcard:
1.1 innings
4 ER
2 BS, 1 Loss.

Trade him.

Hoffy...
awesome stuff to get out average hitters...and for the most part, most hitters are average.

When in post season or big games, or teams with quality lumber (i.e. All star games), Trevor can be figured out.

I've always felt, good hitting > Trevor. Trevor > average hitting.

Took me 5 hours to figure out that equation.

We had a great time hanging out with jbox and johnnydub on the hill great to see you again guys.  It was fun that PadSquad 57 kept coming by and hanging out and the crowd was great.

  Real tough loss tonight.

At the top of the 13th, the event crew arrived at the Rally Bell in the East Light Tower...

Once Scotty hit the HR we were going bonkers.  jbox just had to punch somebody in the ribs!  jdub was the obvious target but jbox felt no shame about sharing his punches.  The Gal told him to punch the Tony statue for having a son.

Finally a breakthrough.  I knew our bullpen would outlast theirs.  Jorge "Me and" Julio gives up a bomb!  The Rally Bell works again.

The Padres failed to add runs in the 13th and Hell's Bells was played throughout the ballpark.  Then, as predicted but not really dictated by the situation, here comes Hoffman.  I would have left Thatcher in to face the lefty Matsui, one batter at a time. Nothing earlier was typical bullpen use why start now?  Trevor has not pitched to his own standards lately especially with two run leads.

You saw it.  We saw it.  It's over.

It was an amazing game as far as baseball games go.  I will never forget it.  The outcome is disappointing. It is unfair that Hairston's HR is only a footnote.

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I'm past denial
and anger. I'm at the bargaining stage. Please, please, just one more game.

I'll let you know when I'm at the acceptance stage.

Anger/Resentment
Anger at the situation, perhaps anger at the person you perceive as triggering your episode.

I'm so sad, why bother with anything? Stage 5 isn't coming. Ever.

Days later
range of emotions...I thought the blown ump call didn't matter...but actually, I was thinking, if the call was right, would have been 2 outs, no runners on.  Hoffy could have gotten the third out, sent the game to a 14th.

This must be denial phase....

2 blown saves in a row
That's really weird, right?  I can't stop thinking about it.  So strange.  It's not right.  Someone needs to invent the flux capacitor so we can go back and fix what went wrong.  It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Sorry guys
What a way for the season to end. Unreal.

I really think it would have been different if there had been an off-day between the end of the regular season and last night's game. It's too much to ask the Rally Unicorn to adjust to the thin air so quickly. He almost did though.

blame game
a list of who gets my blame:

Hoffman - sorry man, you've given me a lot of great memories but at this point i have a thousand times more confidence in Heath Bell.  you can take a job as a strength and fitness coach though.

Brady Clark - here's the biggest goat for me.  i'm not saying i could've made those catches, but the padres have always had a CF that could play solid defense (Finley, Kotsay, Cameron) and now i totally understand why.  we win that game with Cameron in CF.

Peavy - not entirely your fault.  you were in colorado, there was a lot of pressure, you pushed a little too much.  but one of these days, if you want to be the hall of fame pitcher you think you can be, you're going to have to start being money for big games.  Clemens started off like this too, then he turned it around.

Home Plate Umpire - McClellan or whatever his name is.  his strike zone was consistent, so that's fine.  but everyone and their mother saw that Holliday missed home.  plus, his slow calls drove me crazy.  to end one of the early innings, Peavy threw a pitch on the corner and Bard was back in the dugout before the strike call was made (it was like the guy didn't want to call a ball there because it would start a ruckus).  I feel like you could totally influence this guy by the way you acted after the play happened.  like if Barrett had drove for Holliday to make a tag after the slide (essentially saying "i saw him miss the plate!") that the call would've been out instead of safe.

heroes of the game include Bard (solidified himself as one of the 2 best hitters on the team), A-Gon (ditto, and clutch!), Bell and there were others as well.  i like where the team is headed for next year, i can't wait to see what Kouz can do in the future, etc. etc.

i think i'll root for the phillies throughout the playoffs.

From what I heard
since I didn't get to see the game, McClellan was supposedly all over the place with his strikezone last nite. Jake wasn't getting corner calls so he had to go down the middle. We all saw how well that worked out.

AAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!
What a sucky weekend for sports.  First the Heels, the Panthers, the Chargers, and Unexplained Bacon (my fantasy football team)...

but this, THIS BREAKS MY FRIGGIN' HEART!!!

I say keep Trevor for all 'normal' games, but when it's a big big game... make him the Bullpen Supervisor or something, but Dear God, DON'T LET HIM NEAR THE MOUND!!!!!!

Sigh, baseball season done.  Football season looking bad.  Perhaps I'll just skip straight to college basketball.

GO HEELS!!!! EXPERIENCE IT!!!!!!

Yep.
First WVU lost to South Florida and, for all intents and purposes, ended "the year" (as in "this is the year" and now this. I don't wanna be a Padres fan. It hurts too much. Too bad I can't help it.

I know
Jess was asking if I would feel better if I adopted the Panthers since we're in Charlotte now. A quick check of the scores told me all I needed to know. Only so much I can take.

...if Peavy had icy hot on his junk last night? That might explain what went wrong...
