Which is more important: Making the playoffs or preparation for the playoffs?

NL wild-card playoff preview:

I guess this whole Peavy debate comes down to which philosophy you subscribe to.  One philosophy is that the ultimate goal is the World Series and that if you're pitching isn't set up to win the first series then your chances of advancing in the playoffs are greatly diminished.  So much so that you'd risk not making the post-season in an effort to set up your playoff rotation.

The other philosophy is that you can't win the World Series if you don't make the playoffs.  The goal of the regular season is to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen once you get in.  This is the one I believe in.  Very little thought should be given to the playoffs until you clinch.

Nate Silver of BaseballProspectus.com does a good job simplifying the arguments:

But from the standpoint of maximizing their chances of reaching the postseason, the right mathematical move would have been to start Peavy on Sunday in Milwaukee on three days' rest.
So Bud Black made the high-risk, high-reward gamble: win today and set yourself up beautifully for the NLDS. It didn't work out, but it was probably the right move for his club.

Here's Nate's prediction for tonight's game:

Expect the Padres to steady themselves under Peavy's right arm and win 5-3, but if the Rockies can rattle Peavy in their first trip through the lineup, psychological factors may come into play and tip the balance in their favor.

It doesn't matter
the only way the Padres are winning is with a little sacrifice to the Gods.

I think Jdub's cat must be sacrificed for the greater good.

Don't think anyone has posted this yet:
Pretty cool article on what the Padres we're doing in the clubhouse after the loss yesterday.
As Drew dug in, so did the Padres, and when he was thrown out on a potential infield hit, the clubhouse collectively groaned. One player sarcastically said, "Let's go drink some beer," while another was much more defiant, saying in an angry voice, "Let's go break their [expletive] hearts."

Love it as your signature. I've been saying that around work today and getting some looks. That is my official catchphrase for the day.

Me too
But I've been saying "Let's go break their stinking hearts" assuming it was Jake Peavy who said it.
This is just the tip of the suck iceberg.

i think the peavy argument is simple
they didn't want to have to use Peavy to close out the Brewers if they didn't have to.  recent luck, averages and the pitches on the hill told them that there was a fairly good chance that either of the last 2 pitchers, going against a team that had no chance at the playoffs anymore, stood a fairly decent chance of grabbing a win.  it was an honest mistake, but 100 times out of a 100 you have to make that move.  sending Peavy to the mound on short rest to get a win tells your team that you're not confident in their bats and you're not confident in any pitchers after Peavy.

Tonight's game on TBS:
The broadcasting crew for tonight is Don Orsillo, Joe Simpson and Craig Sager reporting from the field.

Orsillo does  play-by-play for the Red Sox on the New England Sports Network.

Joe Simpson (no relation to OJ or Jessica) is an analyst for the Atlanta Braves and a former player for the Dodgers.

Craig Sager is the douchebag that does sideline reporting during NBA games and wears hideous blazers.

AZ Snakepit doesn't appreciate GLB
I was just browsing through their site do see who they would want to win today. I found this gem:

"Jim makes a good point that the Padres would have already spent Peavy just to get in, but cheering for the Padres (and their less than stellar blog 'community') does seem wrong."

Jeez. Good job GLB. No way we can succeed without the support of AZ Snakepit.

They spend a truly embarrassing amount of time
on our threads.  Personally, I find it pretty weird. What possible reason do they have to care about what a bunch of Padres fans say to each other?  To my knowledge, no one who spends a lot of time posting here spends any time posting over there. So what gives?

i would say
that they either feel threaten for us, or have deep rooted sexual desires for us.  Probably both.

They take themselves pretty seriously over there.  I mean, they've got over nine years of tradition to protect.

by Winfield's Ghost on Oct 1, 2007 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

All I know
is that we're clearly doomed without their support. Jake has probably already logged on, read that, and has decided to go break his rib for good measure.

by Phantom on Oct 1, 2007 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I will be more direct...
The entire Snakepit can collectively kiss my ass. They may not regard us as "stellar" (like they would know anything about being stellar anyways); but, all I know is, we don't go trolling on their site, so we must be doing something right.

So, everyone at GLB, keep up the good work, because there is no place (outside of the ballpark, of course) that I would rather be during a Padres game.

Let's destroy the Rockies tonight and make a run at these classless idiots.

So here is the Plan.
Lets just score like 8 to 10 runs in the first few innings, that way we wont have to be soiling our pants the entire game and we can quit being emotional wrecks.
Let's go drink some beer.

Tonight....
When the Padres take the field for BP and warm-ups...they should be in their regular road unis.  And then when they take the field:

BAM!

Don't tell the Rockies organization, the media, the f*cking commissioner's office. Just do it. Just run out onto the field in the retros. Selig wants to fine us? Bring it on a-hole.

That would reach
previously untouched marks on the badassery scale- especially with master of all things badass Jake Peavy on the hill. Can you imagine how awesome it would be for them to run out in straight yellow, unbeknownst to the TBS broadcasting crew?

The only thing I like about ND...
Is how the players will walk into the locker room, see the green jerseys where they were expecting blue, and know that it is time to knock heads*.

*Being that it is ND, however, the only knocking of heads that will actually take place is the knocking of their own golden domes.

Speaking of that...how about those 1960 unis the Huskies were sporting Saturday night? It was like Halloween and they all went as Notre Dame.

totally surreal to see those unis from the stands. If SC were really playing ND the score wouldn't have nearly been as close, though.
