Today would have been Tony Gwynn’s 57th birthday, had he not passed away at the age of 54 due to cancer. The City of Poway has been working for years to find a way to celebrate Gwynn’s ties to the city in which he lived for decades. They ultimately decided on a bronze statue and raised money through private citizens and a fundraising event.
This morning Gwynn’s family, media and hundreds of fans attended the unveiling near Lake Poway, where a statue of Gwynn holding a child was shown for the first time.

This is the third statue of Gwynn located in San Diego County. The first is at Petco Park and the second is at Waterfront Park.
