For the second time this season, Trevor Cahill is on the disabled list for a strain. A month ago it was his lower back that caused him to spend ten days on the DL. This time it’s his right shoulder.
The Padres have placed Cahill on the 10-day DL, retroactive to May 14th, the day after his latest start. In his absence, it is likely that Jarred Cosart will slide into his rotation spot, which is due to come up on Thursday. Coincidentally, Cosart returned from the DL himself on May 14th. He spent 24 days on the DL with a right hamstring strain, and upon his return to the big league club was slated to go back to the bullpen in a long relief role.
When Cosart was activated from the DL, Kevin Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso for the fourth time this season. Now that Cahill is on the DL, Quackenbush will once again rejoin the Padres.
