The Padres are in Arizona for a four-game series against the Diamondbacks, and the pitching rotations have aligned themselves in a familiar way. Tonight’s game will feature a repeat of last Wednesday’s starters: Jhoulys Chacin vs. Zack Greinke. You might remember that game for two things: Chacin was brilliant, and Erick Aybar was the hero with a solo shot off Greinke to score the only run of the game.
On April 19th, Jhoulys Chacin pitched eight scoreless innings against these same Diamondbacks. He only gave up three hits and one walk, while registering five strikeouts and a whole mess of weak contact. The 101 pitches in that contest is his highest pitch count to date. The bullpen is depleted, with every pitcher on the current roster having pitched in at least one of the last two games, so it’s imperative that Chacin pitch effectively and efficiently tonight to keep the game in hand. A roster move may take place to have a fresh arm available tonight.
In last Wednesday’s game, Greinke was no slouch himself. He matched Chacin’s eight innings, with the only ugly mark being the surprise home run that Erick Aybar sent into the rightfield seats. He matched Madison Baumgarner by taking a complete game loss against these Padres. Can it happen again?
The Padres are licking their wounds after two rough losses to the Marlins. One bad inning in each game spoiled what could have been satisfying wins. Instead, the team has to regroup and face a potent division rival on the road to try to right their ship.
