Despite some exciting offense early on yesterday, the Padres couldn't get it done against the Brewers in Maryvale, losing 5-3. Today they are back home in Peoria, set to play host to the visiting Cleveland Indians.
Jered Weaver gets his second Spring start. In his Padres debut last Monday, the veteran right-hander pitched two innings against the White Sox, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and one strikeout.
While Weaver already likely has a place in the rotation locked up, the competition remains fierce for the rest of the spots. Two candidates, Christian Friedrich and Tyrell Jenkins, are scheduled to get some innings in today as well. Friedrich didn't do so well in his Cactus League debut on March 2nd, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk in two frames. Jenkins fared a little better in his two previous appearances but struggled with his command his last time out. Altogether this Spring he's thrown a combined 3 1/3 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and five walks.
