The Padres 2017 coaching staff was announced today by GM A.J. Preller. There will be three new coaches serving as infield, outfield and first base coaches under manager/motivational speaker Andy Green.
Former Padre Ramon Vazquez was selected as the team’s infield coach. A name I actually recognize. He played with the Pads during some dark years from 2002 to 2004, so he’s familiar with a team climbing from baseball’s abyss. He’s been in the Astros organization for the last three years coaching.
Johnny Washington will be the team’s new first base coach. I’d never heard of him before but apparently he’s been the hitting coach down in San Antonio.
Jonathan Mathews is another relatively unknown hitting coach that comes to us from the Diamondbacks.
They’ll join bench coach Mark McGwire, pitching coach Darren Balsley, third base coach Glenn Hoffman, hitting coach Alan Zinter and bullpen coach Doug Bochtler.
