The Padres dropped the first two games of this home series against the Marlins, so today's series finale will be about trying to avoid a sweep and salvage a win in the three-game set.
Making the start for San Diego will be Luis Perdomo, making a spot start for the recently re-injured Andrew Cashner. The Rule 5 Draft pick, in his first year as a Major Leaguer, has posted a 9.50 ERA while going 1-2 through his first 17 outings (mostly relief appearances) of the season. His only other Major He gave up four runs (three earned) in his most recent appearance, when he threw 5 2/3 innings last Friday in relief of Cashner, who left the game with neck pain after only six pitches. In that outing, Perdomo also struck out seven batters.
Justin Nicolino will take the mound for Miami, hoping to lead his team to a sweep as he makes his tenth start in his second Major League season. So far this year he's gone 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA. The left-hander is coming off arguably his worst start of the season. Last Friday he went 5 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. This will be his first career appearance against the Padres.
