James Shields was doing okay for the first six innings this afternoon, but when he gave up his third home run of the day in the seventh inning, it was more than the Padres offense could overcome.
Shields gave up his first solo shot to David Peralta in the fourth, and then Ender Inciarte hit him for another in the fifth. He helped his own cause in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out double deep into the left-center field gap. Travis Jankowski followed that with a triple. The speedy centerfielder looked like he was seriously considering going for the inside-the-park home run, but he returned to third base after taking a big turn. The patience paid off, as Cory Spangenberg hit a line drive to right field to tie the game at two apiece.
But Inciarte struck again in the seventh with a two-run bomb to right field, and that's how the season series against the Diamondbacks ended.
The Brewers come to town Tuesday for the final home series of the season, and Tyson Ross will open it up at 7:10 PM.
