Los Niños: Padres Weekly Farm Update (Through 7/5)

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Last week was kind of weird for Padres prospects. There were some good weeks, some bad ones, but overall it was okay. This week was also the start of the new international signing period, but Wonko already covered that here, so I won't talk about it. That's all I have to write for the introduction this week.

The Top Guys

Hunter Renfroe: Someone clearly wants to earn a callup to AAA, as Renfroe had another great week this week. He only played in four games this week, so he only got 17 at bats, but Renfroe still got six hits, including a home run and a triple. He struckout four times, which isn't very good, but is better then his season average. His batting average keeps going up, it is now at a not terrible .251, his slugging percentage is finally above .400, (.410 to be exact) and he hit his eighth home run of the season. Things are finally pointing up for Renfroe.

Rymer Liriano: Not including Monday (when he went 0 for 6 with two Ks) Rymer had a good week. In his 17 at bats after Monday, Liriano had four singles and a home run, in addition to walking once. Like Renfroe, strikeouts are the problem, as Liriano struckout six times this week, putting his K% at 22.2%. His batting average is currently a respectable .280, his on base percentage is good at .375, and the slugging percentage is good at .425, all adding up to a 119 wRC+. Maybe he'll get called up once we trade Upton ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Michael Gettys: Hey there's a pleasant surprise, Gettys wasn't terrible this week, he was actually quite good. In 24 at bats, Gettys got nine hits, four of which went for extra bases (all doubles), he walked once, and he only struckout once. .233/.254/.369 is not good at any level, and especially not in the Midwest League, but at least he's barely even 19, putting him in the top 10, and probably even higher for youngest players in the league.

Jose Rondon: Rondon just finished his second full week in the Texas League, a league in which he's the fourth youngest hitter, but this week wasn't much better. Rondon got four hits in 18 at bats (one of which was a double) and only struckout three times. Overall through his first 16 games in AA, Rondon has an on base percentage barely above .200, and only two extra base hits, but this was an obviously aggressive promotion, so not too much was to be expected right away.

Zech Lemond: Lemond hasn't been pitching on schedule for his last two starts, as he has eight days, and seven days between his last two. His start last Sunday was a mixed bag, as he only gave up one earned run, despite giving up eight hits, and only striking out two batters. His start yesterday was very bad, as he gave up eight runs (6 earned), nine hits, and three walks in four innings of work. His ERA and WHIP are now not good at all at 5.42 and 1.61 respectively.

Ruddy Giron: This one prospect who had a really bad week, as he only got two hits in 25 at bats, and didn't walk at all. The only bright side of Giron's week was that he only struckout three times (showing the good understanding of the strike zone that Kiley talked about), and that both of his hits went for extra bases, as he hit a home run and a double. He's still really young so that's cool.

2015 Draft Guys

Austin Smith: Has not debuted yet

Jacob Nix: Has not debuted yet

Austin Allen: A college catcher drafted for his hitting and power, Allen was expected to be good right out the gate, but Allen hasn't really met expectations. He only had three hits in eighteen at bats this week continuing his dreadful start to the season, which includes a .176 batting average and .256 on base percentage.

Josh Magee: Not a good week for Magee as he had five hits in 27 at bats, and struck out ten times. Overall, he has a .226 batting average, and a 32.2% strikeout rate.

Bonus Prospect of the Week

Alex Dickerson: The 25-year-old first baseman in El Paso was acquired from the Pirates in the Miles MIkolas trade back before 2014. The lefty is known for his good gap power (sounds a lot like Yonder Alonso right?) shown by his 23 doubles, seven triples, and seven home runs, Dickerson also has good control of the strike zone, as he strikes out less then 20% of the time, and has a walk rate of 9%. His total triple slash is really good, at .308/.381/.516. and his 139 wRC+ is 10th best int he PCL (one spot behind fellow Chihuahua Cody Decker). I don't really know if a promotion is even possible for him right now, but hopefully he keeps hitting and forces it to happen.
