Cashner shows lively fastball in rehab start

Andrew Cashner returned to live action last night with a rehab start in Lake Elsinore for the Storm, the Padres Single A affiliate. He threw 24 pitches (19 strikes) in 2 innings of work. He struck out the first batter of the game and threw 9 pitches in the first inning. He followed that up with two more strikeouts in a 15 pitch second inning. His fastball was, well…fast. It topped out at 95 on the stadium’s radar gun and had good movement. He used the fastball to blow away 2 Mavericks following a one out double in the second inning. Cashner was just a bit rusty with his breaking pitches, however. After leaving the game, Cashner spent another 10 minutes in the bullpen working on his delivery of the slider.

After his work, he spent the rest of the inning hanging out with the bullpen staff of the Storm who took the opportunity to learn from a very successful tutor. He signed every autograph that the fans brought him and posed for pictures with anyone who had their cell phone camera handy.

Defensively behind Cashner, Jose Rondon (who came over with 3 other prospects in the Huston Street trade last month) showed some nice footwork on several hard hit balls to shortstop. Offensively Mallex Smith drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first inning. He promptly stole second, and aggressively took third on a wild pitch. He scored on Alberth Martinez’s RBI groundout. That is the kind of run manufacturing we would all like to see more of in Petco Park.
