TTG and I have been throwing around the idea of making a team of our all time favorite players never to play for our Padres. While Gwynn obviously does not qualify (probably the player farthest from qualifying) I just wanted to take a moment to recognize him. I have lived in AZ almost my whole life, and therefor never got a chance to meet him or anything of the sort, but my lack of personal stories about him does not diminish how much I love him. I cried for two days straight when I heard the news and could not bring myself to do this post without bringing him up, even if he has nothing to do with the post itself.
Alright, now that I have wiped the tears from my eyes it is time to give you my all time favorite non-Padres 25 man roster. I am willing to explain any of my picks you might have questions about in the comments, but most of the players that seem random are from my baseball card playing days with my dad. My card collection started with some random person's duplicates of the 91 Fleer set, and because of that it is my favorite card design and has lots of my random favorite players. A couple of the players are also people that I like fairly well, but are only there to fill a position I needed, so if you say "Schilling?!?!" and give me a horror story of one of my picks you may be able to talk me out of them.
Alright. Alright, alright, alright, alright. Alright. Now I will give you my picks, I promise.
C: Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez
1B: Mo Vaughn
2B: Craig Counsell
3B: Nomar Garciaparra (I know he was a shortstop most of his career, but baseball-reference lists him as a 1B and 3B as well.)
SS: Rafael Furcal
LF: Bo Jackson
CF: Kirby Puckett
RF: Ichiro Suzuki
Mark Prior (I know he was signed by the Padres, and I even have a card with him as a Padre, but he never played a game with them.)
Oil Can Boyd
Bob Gibson/Felix Hernandez (I couldn't choose, I like them both a lot, but don't absolutely love either.)
Bud Black (Is this a legal pick?)
Well, there you have it. Now you can let me have it on any of my picks, and please share your favorite non-Padre players ever. I know it is too hard for everyone to make a whole team, but give me some picks and why you like them. Thanks, and may Tony always be in our hearts.
