Dodgers 5, Padres 4: Late rally isn't enough for the Padres to overcome Wieland's struggles

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Wieland is shaky in his first start of 2014.

Our Padres battled back from an early deficit against the Dodgers on Saturday afternoon, but their rally came up a little short. Joe Weiland made his third appearance, but first start, of the Spring, and had some trouble finding his command. His struggles started right away, as he allowed a leadoff triple, RBI groundout, single (and stolen base), RBI single, and a walk before finally collecting the last two outs to end the 1st inning.

The trouble continued in the bottom of the 3rd after Adrian Gonzalez whiffed to lead off the frame. Wieland issued back-to-back walks followed by back-to-back singles and then another walk to bring home two more Dodgers runs. At that point, Jesse Hahn came in to relieve the starter, but a sac fly brought home a third run (credited to Wieland) before Hahn could get out of the inning.

Hahn pitched two more innings, both scoreless, after that. Then Kevin Quackenbush, Dale Thayer, and Alex Torres combined for three scoreless, allowing only one hit between them.

The Friars offense was kept off the board until the 8th inning when Alex Castellanos hit a leadoff homer. But that was just the beginning of the late-inning rally attempt. Tommy Medica singled, advanced to second on a walk by Cody Decker, and came home when Daniel Robertson hit a ground-rule double. Austin Hedges and Alexi Amarista added RBI singles to make it a one-run game. The Padres eventually had the bases loaded with two outs, but the same man who started it all (Castellanos) brought it to an end when he struck out swinging. The Friars failed to put up anymore fight in the 9th, going down in order to secure the victory for L.A.
