Just like the rest of us, the Padres just aren't ready for the season to end. They stretched 2013's final home game all the way beyond the sunset. It was an emotional day as Mark Kotsay was honored before the game, and it got even more emotional as the team said goodbye to their fans with a walkoff win in extra innings.
The Padres got on the board first with a two out rally in the third inning. Chris Denorfia hit his second triple of the season and scored on Jedd Gyorko's RBI single. Then Jedd came around on a double from Chase Headley. The lead was short-lived, as Paul Goldschmidt's leadoff single in the top of the fourth was immediately followed by Martin Prado's home run to left field.
And then nothing happened for seven innings. Robbie Erlin cruised through the seventh, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven (that number is popping up a lot tonight). Between the middle of the fourth and the middle of the eleventh, there was just one hit (it came from the home team, naturally). Tommy Medica had enough of the quiet in the bottom of the eleventh, hitting a leadoff slow roller down the third base line. Then something that truly screamed "baseball" happened. Jesus Guzman got a hold of his pitch, taking it deep to left center. But he was well and truly Petcoed, and the ball came down at the warning track... where center fielder A.J. Pollock had totally lost it. The ball bounced right over the fence for a ground rule double. With no outs, the Diamondbacks put Nick Hundley on first to load the bases. It was a safe bet, since he was followed by Alexi Amarista, who was in a 1 for 43 slump. And then karma bit them in the ass when Alexi hit his first walkoff hit right down the middle. Padres win, 3 to 2.
That's it for our boys at home, but there's still one last series in San Francisco this weekend. Burch Smith toes the rubber against Ryan Vogelsong at 7:15 PM.
