Orioles Beat Padres 4-1

Denis Poroy

San Diego fell 4-1 to Baltimore Tuesday night in the first game of a two game set to end their streak of four series wins in a row.

The Orioles got an early lead when Nate McLouth doubled, stole third, and came in on an Adam Jones single in the first. Will Venable tripled to lead off the Padres' half of the inning but fat friggin' load of good that did. He was stranded, as were Jedd Gyorko and Alexi Amarista after getting on with no outs in the second. Venable got left on the basepaths again in the third, walking and stealing a base to no avail.

Adam Jones drove in his and his team's second run of the night with a homer to lead off the fourth inning, and singled in the sixth for his third hit in three tries. Dude must really like being back in his hometown.

The Padres finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Denorfia, Chase Headley, and Yonder Alonso led off the inning with three straight singles. They only got one run in the frame but, hey, one is better than none. You've got to start somewhere.

The seventh was pretty uneventful and the eighth brought yet another single by Adam Jones. Good grief, guy. He then stole second because why the hell not? Chris Davis promptly doubled him home to put the Orioles up by two again. They picked up another run in the ninth to make it 4-1. Miraculously, Jones had nothing to do with it.

I missed the bottom of the ninth when a sudden case of brownwater called me out of the room. I took a look at Gameday when I came back and it turns out that unfortunately the Padres did not also get some runs. Edinson Volquez was credited with the loss to fall to 8-9. The two teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon, with Eric Stults slated to take on Miguel Gonzalez.
