For those thinking we have to spend a ton of money.
How much money do you propose the Padres spend? I personally expect the team to float around mid-80s, with the potential to flirt with mid 90s in a season where we need one or two more FA pieces to make a serious run. This is a realistic expectation. Of course if the Padres start to spew out star prospects much like the Nationals and fan base grows, then we can talk trip digits.
We are really just a few contracts away from putting our payroll into that 80mil plateau. And there are a few contracts that management will need to negotiate this offseason, not including any FA acquisitions. I know it pains some to hear this, but I trust the experts within the organization who make decisions based on economic feasibility while putting the best possible product on the field. Baseball is not like football. You can't cut players and their contracts at will. We are still paying Jason Bartlett for not being on the roster.
We are not the Astros spending 40mil. People need to stop acting like we are. Payroll has increased 17% in one year, only 7 other teams have a higher increased payroll year over year. A step in the right direction. Not to mention their public willingness to make Headley the most expensive player in franchise history (albeit a dumb PR mistake). These aren't the cost cutting methods of yesteryear.
