Both teams were scoreless after three innings, with the Padres wasting a one-out triple by Rene Rivera in the third. The Mets scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when Josh Satin singled in Daniel Murphy, but the Padres tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Chase Headley led off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Yonder Alonso, took third on a single by Chris Denorfia, and scored on a sac fly by Jaff Decker. Spoiler alert: it was the only run they'd score all game.
The Padres threatened in the bottom of the fifth, picking up three singles, but the inning ended when Tyson Ross was thrown out trying to score. The game stayed tied at ones until the top of the eighth, at which time Luke Gregerson got the call. He hit former Padre Mike Baxter (who the...?), intentionally walked Daniel Murphy after Baxter stole second, and then allowed a double to Marlon Byrd that plated both runners. New York tacked on an extra run in the ninth inning on expectant father John Buck's fifteenth home run of the year.
Starting pitchers Tyson Ross and Zack Wheeler were exceptional but didn't figure in the decision. Scott Atchison was credited with the win, improving to 3-1 on the season. Gonzalez Germen picked up his first save. The loss dropped Gregerson to 5-7, equaling his career high in losses which he set in 2010. His 3.54 ERA would also be a new career high if the season ended today.
But since the season doesn't end today, they'll be back out there Friday night: same place, same time. Hopefully the outcome is different.
