The Padres have spent the whole night struggling offensively against Reds pitching. And now they have to face Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the 9th, down 1-0. Hear that? That's the sound of the Friar Unfaithful shutting off their TVs/radios and going to sleep.
Chapman walks Yonder Alonso to lead off the inning. Credit Alonso for a p good at bat here, keeping his cool and making Chapman work. He draws seven pitches, the last three of which are 100, 102, and 100 mph.
Then, Bud Black puts Chris Denorfia in to pinch-hit for Will Venable because why not? Turns out it was the best decision evar. #ExtendBlack
Even though Alonso just walked, Deno swings on the first pitch he sees. Usually this annoys the hell out of me, but not tonight. He takes that first pitch yard. A bomb to center field.
Look how his jaw drops as he sees how far he hit that ball. Yeah, Denosaur. YOU did that. And we are so proud of you.
Chapman tries to figure out what just happened. It's a mixture of anger, disbelief, and confusion. And. It's. Glorious.
Denorfia rounds the bases and greets his team at the plate, adrenaline pumping.
Look at all those happy faces.
I like how Alexi Amarista just emerges from the sea of navy blue like a little baby rabbit emerging from a rabbit hole.
