With their 2nd round selection the Padres draft a Gilbert HS (AZ) prospect who already saw his brother drafted earlier today. Dustin Peterson's brother D.J. was drafted by the Mariners at #12, one spot before the Padres drafted in the 1st round. Here's what MLB.com has to say about the newest Friar (it includes the obligatory brother mention, of course):
Like his older brother, DJ Peterson at the University of New Mexico, Dustin can really swing the bat. He has a short, compact swing and a ton of bat speed. The ball jumps off his bat, and he has the chance to hit for both average and plenty of power. While Peterson has good hands and a solid arm, most feel he won't stay at shortstop but has all the tools to profile very well at the hot corner, the same position his big pro plays. Whether he heads to college like DJ -- he's committed to Arizona State -- remains to be seen, but his name was generating some buzz as the spring wore on.
The Padres could use some depth at SS in the minors with the only other decent prospect down there being Jace Peterson (no relation). A solid pick, assuming they can sign him.
