Logan Forsythe has been killing the ball since reporting to Tucson on a rehab assignment. Forsythe is seven for his last nine at bats over three games after going 0-2 in his first game back on Thursday. These four games have been his first in-game action of the season after being sidelined in spring training because his plantar was a fascist or something. I'm not sure; I wasn't really paying attention.
After the aforementioned 0-2, Logan bounced back on Friday with a 3-3 night featuring a double and a triple. Following a 1-2 Saturday with an RBI and two walks, Forsythe again came a homer within the cycle on Sunday. This time it took him all of four at bats to collect his three hits but he also added a pair of RBI and a walk. All told, he has a .636/ .714/ 1.182 slash line in the small sample he's dribbled out. And yes, before you mention it; BABiP, regression, and what have you.
Also rehabbing with Tucson is center fielder Cameron Maybin. He also has seven hits but they are spread out over 23 at bats for a .304 average. Maybin has hit safely in six of his seven games and has homered in two of the last three. He has also mixed in a double and five walks while striking out "only" five times.
In addition to Forsythe and Maybin's combined cycle, a number of other TuPads also had great days with their bats in Tucson's 13-5 win over Reno on Sunday.
- Leadoff man Dean Anna went 2-5 and remains in the PCL top ten for BA with a .337 mark. He added a walk and two runs.
- Daniel Robertson pinch ran for Forsythe and scored a run. He stayed in the game, walking in his only plate appearance.
- Pitcher Burch Smith, who has won both of his AAA starts, collected his first professional hit with a double of Aces started Bryan Henry. Smith also came around to score his first run.
- Third baseman Jesus Merchan went 4-6 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.
- Catcher Rene Rivera was 3-5 with a home run, scored twice, and drove in four. His .353 BA is good for third in the PCL but don't get too used to him. Like pitcher Sean O`Sullivan and outfielder Travis Buck, the veteran of parts of four major league seasons can opt out and become a free agent if (when) he's still in AAA on June 15.
I'm sure nearly everyone has a creative solution for who should go where when Forsythe and Maybin make their returns to San Diego. I'm generally not one to speculate on such things because I'm a dummy and I very much like saving face. All I do know is I've never been all that crazy about that Jesus Guzman guy so I wouldn't mind seeing him go the way of the buffalo and Oscar Salazar.
