Andrew Cashner pitched a gem today. In eight innings, he gave up just one run on five hits (and one of those hits was really an error, but the narrative says that Yasiel Puig must hit) and one walk. It wasn't enough to earn him a win, though. The Padres only managed one run against the Dodgers' pitching staff, even though starter Chris Capuano was working on short rest.
Not much happened for the first 6 innings. Cashner was pitching really well, and the Padres offense was struggling against Chris Capuano. Things got dicey in the top of the seventh inning when Adrian Gonzalez hit a leadoff double down the right field line. He moved to third on a ground out, and then it looked like Cashner might escape the inning unscathed after Gonzalez couldn't score on Andre Ethier's ground out. But then Juan Uribe hit his second double of the afternoon to score the game's first run. No matter, though: Carlos Quentin hit a leadoff bomb into the second deck of the Western Metal building in the bottom of the seventh.
Cashner stayed in to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, but replaced him with pinch hitter Will Venable in the bottom half of the inning. Venable grounded out. With the game still tied in the ninth, Bud Black brought in Huston Street to face the heart of the Dodger lineup. After striking out Puig, he gave up back to back home runs to Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez. Quentin kept things alive with a two out single off of Kenley Jansen in the bottom of the ninth, but Kyle Blanks struck out to end the game. The Padres split the series and fall to .500. The Dodgers are still in the world's deepest cellar.
The Padres start a three game series against the Phillies tomorrow, with the indomitable Eric Stults taking on Cliff Lee at 7:10 PM.
